Yes. There is no grog or sand in the clay. It is possible to add sodium silicate to both engobes and glazes! Just reduce the amount of water you originally start with. Thanks for checking it out. 👍

The clay powder has no schamotte is that right? So could you also use engobes and add sodium silicate? Thanks for sharing this process!

Hi Andy, thank you for the easy explanatory video in burnishing. I am newish in pottery and I am experimenting technics. My question has nothing to do with burnishing but I am looking for a similar tool than the yellow one you have on the video. How is it called and where can you find it please? Many thanks-

Hi There! I ran through this video again and I didn't see a yellow tool. There is a sure form plane in the burnishing video that is a super useful tool for leather hard shaping. These can be found at any hardware store and I think there are for plaster. Thanks for watching, and I hope this answers your question. :)

I tried this and only got 2 layers. One very watery and one thick. I'm wondering if i didnt add enough sodium cilicate. Should I add more and try again?

Thanks for watching! You should at least get a much thicker sludge layer that settles to the bottom. Sometimes it’s hard to see three distinct layers. I would add a bit more sodium silicate as it does seem to vary from batch to batch. I hope it works out!

Hi Andy! Awesome video! I’ve been researching this for awhile and I appreciate your breaking down the math to a small batch! 🙌🏼
Wondering, I want to fire to 5-6. But someone told me that the Sig will loose it’s sheen above 04. Is this true?
And, I know a couple potters who fire to Cone 6 with the Sig on the outside, glaze on the inside of the mug. Is the Sig considered food safe at mid-fire range?🤷🏽‍♀️
Just learning about it all. I got some Low Fire clay to try and make some (ceramic shop guy didn’t tell me about the ball clay). But wondering if I could use my mid fire clay instead?
Thanks again for taking the time. I really appreciated your video.

Hi Faith! Its true that the sign will loose it’s shine above cone 1 or so, but it still has a beautiful antique-like surface that is non toxic but would only be durable enough to go on the outside of a utilitarian object.
If I understand your question correctly, I would just stick with the ball clay to make the sig. It should sit on your mid-range clay body just fine.
      Thanks for watching! -Andy

Thanks so much Andy for getting back with me! That sounds great! I do a lot of slip trailing and all the detail gets buried under glaze, so hope maybe this can be a solution. Plus I love the rawish feel of the clay too!
      Mmm…can I ask two more questions?🙊😅
What is the dif between sodium silicate, and darvan 7? Is one better than the other?
And I couldn’t find what the difference between Ball Clay and XX Sagger(?) was? Does the XX Sagger make a ‘whiter’ terra Sig than the Ball Clay?
Thanks so much for your help! I’ve been looking all over and keep finding conflicting information, or not the exact answer to my questions?🤣 So thanks in advance! Appreciate it so much!

@@faithandprovidence hi again! Darvan and sodium silicate do the same thing, but in 30 years I have only worked with sodium silicate. Xx saggar clay makes a beautiful sig, but has a tiny bit more iron making it more off white but some may have a hard time telling the difference.

@@faithandprovidence You may also want to experiment with colored slips or under glaze which look good all by themselves and won’t cover your detail with a thick layer. They are just flat color that can also be used as a wash when thinned out. Good luck!

Yes, I have both underglazed and used slip as well, but I want a more ‘finished’ look, know what I mean? Not exactly matte underglaze, but not exactly glaze either?! Haha! Thanks so much for all your help and answering my questions!!🙌🏼🙌🏼
