'Individuals like Gilles only come to earth once. He was truly unique and I would have liked to see what career he would have had without this accident. Gilles would have been crowned world champion, I am 100% convinced of that.'' Mario Andretti
No doubt he could have challenged. He was apparently talking to McLaren for 1983 so he could have won the championships Lauda and Prost took in the mid-80s.
Absolutely right. he was the most naturally gifted of them all. let’s not forget he had a very short career and only one year he had a winning car. 312 T4.
Before Gilles became a famous race car driver, he and his brother Jacques both raced snowmobiles. I watched both of them race snowmobiles at our local fairground's racetrack in Antigo Wisconsin in the early to mid 1970's. Jacques continued to be a favorite snowmobile racer well into the 1980's. I believe he was #99.
The best driver is the one that in addition to being fast, also knows how to win and get results. Gilles was the fastest driver of his time perhaps the fastest in F1 history, but he often retired because, going over the limit, either he broke the car or accident.
@Firstname Lastname Hate people like you. You only see things at face value and not one millimeter further. Senna/Schumacher/Hamilton all were in cars that were at the very least competitive- if not championship-winning cars. Senna and Schumacher both were asshole narcissistic drivers (with great driving ability of course) with the "either you move out of my way or we will crash" mentality. Schumacher used a LOT of dirty tricks to win races AND taking out others (twice) for the championship (including Senna) and a part of Ferrari's contract was that the new driver had to play second-fiddle to Schumi, Schumi basically ran the team and only wanted 2nd-rate teammates. Hamilton was basically gifted consecutive championships because of the team- not necessarily his skill (although again, of course he's quick and VERY consistent). Villeneuve was in an absolute dogshit of a car his entire (and short-lived) career where the damn Ferrari turned like a cruise ship so he was constantly having to stick out his rear tires and drift to get the car pointed where he wanted it to go. '79 Watkins Glen qualifying; it was absolutely miserable weather and he finished in first- some ELEVEN seconds ahead of anyone else. He drove to finish 3rd at his home GP after his broken front wing literally blocked his view ahead and when it finally came off, he still managed to find enough grip in the wet to get the Ferrari turning with pretty much ZERO downforce over the front wheels. He was an absolute mad man and lunatic that never had anything just given to him and most of all; he was a clean/gentlemanly racer who didn't rely on dirty/controversial tactics to beat other drivers nor did he have race-winning (never mind championship-winning) material at his disposal like all the other "greats". This clip illustrates his abilities and what the other drivers thought of him (including Enzo, Scheckter, Hunt and Lauda). ua-cam.com/video/lDfRD9QnU34/v-deo.html

with his sloppy and stupid driving? Doubts...
Absolutely right. he was the most naturally gifted of them all. let’s not forget he had a very short career and only one year he had a winning car. 312 T4.
@@HeavyTefflon 1982 Pironi was a way better than him from start although Ferrari was the fastest car this year.
The way Scheckter speaks about and experiences driving seems very similar to Senna, even their hand gestures are alike, amazing...
That proves that people from the other side of the pond arent much different.
Until now I had never heard Gilles Villeneuve speaking English before

Senna
Gilles Villeneuve and Jim Clark are to fastest drivers of all time.

Bravissimo Gilles Villeneuve.
