  • Florida's recently launched high-speed rail, Brightline, could zip its way into Tampa in the future. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor spent the day Monday riding the Brightline from South Florida to Orlando and met with the high-speed rail leaders about making Tampa the next stop. The area proposed for the Brightline station is in Ybor City.

Everyone should want this, even if you dont plan to use it, everyone that does is one less driver that adds to traffic

We could already be riding it if, then governor, Rick (skelietor) Scott had accepted the finds from, then President, Obama. With the rejection the money just went to another state.

He did reject it. Probably because there were no set plans. The high speed rail had a number of stops and it was figured that you would only save a half an hours time by taking the train and not driving. But once you got there, where do you go?. I am glad Brightline is up and operational, it's a private business which always does better than a government one. As long as every city and town does not want a stop it will work.

Highly unlikely when you look at California’s high speed rail debacle.

Brightline should replace all of their trash cans at the stations with “smart” ones, which can compress the waste so there’s room for much more, and tell staff by itself, that it’s full and needs to be emptied.

Right now you can take the train to Miami. It is called Amtrak. I have taken the Amtrak several times from Tampa to Miami with no issues. It's not the high speed rail like Brightline but it is there. Too bad the decision makers cannot make the Amtrak line better by improvements to the rail. The Brightline will still have to cross all those small roads and driveways along the route. Improve the rail, close off some small roads that cross it and it would be a savings and up and running sooner.

Let's not praise Amtrak as if it doesn't have the same grade crossings and issues brightline has. You just don't hear about them as much, but I assure you they happen.

If Amtrak were so great Brightline wouldn’t exist. I’ve considered taking trips on Amtrak before and the cons outweigh the pros. I’d have to wake up at 3AM to get on an old, slow train with poor reviews. You can blame politicians if you want but Amtrak is a failed service that loses billions of dollars to provide a mediocre experience.

I agree. i look forward to Brightline coming to Tampa. I even considered parking at MCO and taking the Brightline South just for joy of riding the train. I have always loved trains, even the one in Palmetto and dinner train in Fort Myers in the past.

@@tomyrobinson3196 I wanted to take Amtrak out of Cincinnati but it leaves a very odd hour, I forgot something like three in the morning or four in the morning and virtually nobody is around then so it’s not a nice place to wait and it’s often not just 30 minutes late, but more hours late !!

its also frequency, amtrack runs only once a day between Orlando and Miami, and not every day. Brightline (while more expensive 80 vs 40) is faster (5hrs vs 3hrs) and more frequent, at multiple times a day

Actually, they are destroying property values for thousands of homeowners by the constant 24/7 train horns and traffic interruptions. I live at least 1/4 mile from the nearest crossing, and it sounds like it's running through my front yard. All day and all night.
