Thanks for this video! My very first millipede (and first pet bug too) is being delivered tomorrow and I'm so excited. I went with a desert species, a pretty gold morph. I've been doing tons of research but I feel like I still have a lot to learn. Your millipede and isopod videos have been very helpful for me.
Great video! I’ve recently become interested in millipedes so I’m going to watching a lot of your videos! It’s like the beginning of my isopods obsession all over again LOL!
They will also take repashy morning wood! Can you also do a millipede tank maintenance video? I am still trying to decide if I really should get millipedes because their maintenance and substrate upkeep is worrying me.
Kenneth Reyes that is a food I have yet to try, but it would like to. I will add that video suggestion to the list, thank you! I wouldn’t worry too much, millipedes are actually very low maintenance pets if you start out with the right substrate.
I think that this video was very useful... I have scarlet and bumblebee millipedes, you should try if you have not yet to buy these species as they have wonderful coloration’s...
outwrage Although leaf co post is probably the best option, it can sometimes be difficult to find. As long as it organic, and made of composted material (preferably no softwood materials) it should be fine.
outwrage It can sometimes be hard to find composts without manure...it does add another layer of uncertainty to the mix, but when it can’t find manure less compost, I have used composted manure in composts without issues.
Hai Russ , a friend of mine showed me his Madagascar cockroach ( I don't remember the name of the species ) yesterday , as you know I am not so fond on insects ( to say the very least lol ) , but I was able to look at him ( my friend told it's a male ) on his hand . It is already something for me ...
+Aquarimax I've asked my friend what was the name of the species of that Madagascar cockroach of his., "gromopharodhina portentosa " . I am sure you know it .
Salvo Smith I have heard them make that sound...it isn’t terribly loud, so it probably wouldn’t wake him, but if he were already awake, it could certainly be startling...
I’m making a bioactive millipede enclosure and planning on doing a 25% substrate change every month (saving the old substrate to check for babies!) Will this eliminate the need for a complete substrate change? I don’t want to kill off my springtail culture
Catherine Snyder This method should work fine, just make sure that you remove that 25% from top to bottom, rather than skimming it off the surface. Magnolia leaves are a great addition, but make sure to include some softer leaves as well, as magnolia leaves take a long time to break down. 😊👍
Junaid Hassan yes, so it heat them to 200 F for 30 or more minutes before use. Fungal spores are also in the air, though, so fungus can definitely appear later anyway.
Kenneth Reyes I am always glad for questions unfortunately, peat does not contain the balance of nutrients millipedes need, although it can be used as an ingredient to the substrate. I use a brand of organic manure-free compost called Eco-Scraps. Brands vary widely from region to region, but if you can find a leaf-based organic compost, that should work as a bass. I add soaked alder wood pellets, lots of fallen hardwood leaves, and finely crushed eggshell.
Thanks for this video. Can you add a spider plant or other plants to their habitat. What happened to your last live chat ? I went to view it and couldn't.
Elaine Smith you’re welcome! Plants could be possible, but millipedes generally prefer it darker than the plants would, so I haven’t tried. Unfortunately, the most recent livestream contained some comments I felt were not appropriate. I hope that does not happen again.
Do they need their substrate replaced or just more added? And can they be kept in vivariums (without reptiles, etc.) in a substrate more suited for plant growth as well with some more wood and leaves mixed in?
JungleHelp For a while, it is fine just to add more substrate, though eventually it will need to be replaced. When that time comes, it is best not to discard it for a few months, as it will often contain tiny millipedes and/or eggs. I have seen some spectacular photos of millipedes in naturalistic planted vivariums in Europe, so apparently it can be done, but it don’t know how long-lasting those setups are.
laughingc0w California does have some interesting millipedes, but you might have to get out into the hill to see any. Bugs in cyberspace always has a selection of millipede species available.
Would this breeding tutorial apply to oxidus gracilis? I’ve been wanting to breed millipedes but I would like to breed a smaller species that could be a good addition to terrariums.
tuqly Changing the substrate depends on the depth of the substrate, how many millipedes you have, and the size of the enclosure. Somewhere between 3 and 12 months. A heat mat is rarely necessary...room temperatures above 60 or so seem to suit these millipedes just fine. 👍
I have never had issues due to the fluid, I just wash my hands when I am exposed to it. From what I understand, ivory millipedes’ repugnatorial fluid is more distasteful than dangerous.
Cody Delong I used to have a trio of Mardonius parilis acuticonus. It is a large African species, though not as large as A. gigas. After a couple of years, the females passed away, so I sold the male to someone who had a lone female. Hopefully they’ll breed. 😊👍
Whats the chances of putting smaller ones in my ball python tank what's the odds of them getting crushed ,hes never really on the ground plenty of depth ???
Going through all your videos for your millipede related ones haha. You should make a millipedes playlist! :))

Wanted to add, I would love more millipede videos in the future if you ever felt like making some :)
Stacia Hill Glad to know they have been helpful, and I will be definitely be making some more. 😊👍
To customize ventilation in plastic storage containers I have been using this 40 watt soldering rod that I got from Amazon. It works like a charm.
Sounds like it is worth a look!
Wet alder pellets. Genius!
wow you answered every questio'n i had on including for spring tails and keeping isopods with mili's which intuitively seems risky
GreGgaeRasta Fari excellent! I am glad to have helped! 👍
They're beautiful!
varanidguy Thank you! 😊👍
Aquarimax, selective school test today... wish me luck. Awesome-looking millipedes
AndrewChen thank you, and best of luck on your test!! 🤞
Very cool millies. Thanks for the video.

Yes they do! I have bumblebees now, and have kept scarlets in the past too 👍
very cute color 😍
sultan serangga ThNk you! They definitely have one of the most beautiful patterns/colors of any US native millipede. 👍
@@Aquarimax I'm insect seeker from indonesia 😊
like millipede 😍
sultan serangga I bet you have some interesting native millipedes in your country 👍
Thanks for the vids. Very informative! I have 4 and they're doing great.
startedoffsolid Awesome! Thanks for the video suggestion 😊👍
I just got some today and im scrambling to get care info hehehe thanks for this video!
Lew Paul glad to help! These millipede videos may help too: ua-cam.com/video/FVs-Qx-U0Jw/v-deo.html

Carmen Patata Anaranjada thank you Carmen! 😊👍
super cool Rus! thanks!

Great video my friend thank you so much for sharing this with all your fans ❤

How important do you think having specifically leaf compost is? Are other organic composts also acceptable?
outwrage Although leaf co post is probably the best option, it can sometimes be difficult to find. As long as it organic, and made of composted material (preferably no softwood materials) it should be fine.
@@Aquarimax great! I know a lot of composts have manure in them, but I've found little mention of that online. Is manure harmful to millipedes?

Sorry. Back again with a question. What particular brands of topsoil are safe for millipedes? Can I just use peat instead?
Kenneth Reyes I am always glad for questions unfortunately, peat does not contain the balance of nutrients millipedes need, although it can be used as an ingredient to the substrate. I'm considering getting some millipedes, I might go with this species. 🤔
Where did you get/buy millipedes? I’m in the Bay Area and never see any millipedes
laughingc0w California does have some interesting millipedes, but you might have to get out into the hill to see any. Bugs in cyberspace always has a selection of millipede species available.
There are some small species that you can find in GGpark or fort funston
Awesome🤩👍
Dinosaurs Terroir World Thank you! Fun millipedes!
Aquarimax your welcome they look awesome!
Hello one of my gold millipede unfortunately passed and I’m wondering if I should buy another one for my other one or if he will be okay by himself
How often do you change the substrate?
Irene Messina About every six months. 👍
Would this breeding tutorial apply to oxidus gracilis? I’ve been wanting to breed millipedes but I would like to breed a smaller species that could be a good addition to terrariums.
I have a feeling that Oxidus would do very well with similar care and breed successfully, but I have never kept it
How often do I have to change their substrate and do I have to get a heat mat?
tuqly Changing the substrate depends on the depth of the substrate, how many millipedes you have, and the size of the enclosure. Somewhere between 3 and 12 months. A heat mat is rarely necessary...room temperatures above 60 or so seem to suit these millipedes just fine. 👍

Albert bob Hi! I use iMovie for iPad. 👍
I have a question. Just got a ivory millipede, is the fluid dangerous in any way?
I have never had issues due to the fluid, I just wash my hands when I am exposed to it. From what I understand, ivory millipedes’ repugnatorial fluid is more distasteful than dangerous.
@@Aquarimax do they have to "Coil up" before they secrete it?
Do you have any giant africans?
Cody Delong I used to have a trio of Mardonius parilis acuticonus. It is a large African species, though not as large as A. gigas. After a couple of years, the females passed away, so I sold the male to someone who had a lone female. Hopefully they’ll breed. 😊👍
Whats the chances of putting smaller ones in my ball python tank what's the odds of them getting crushed ,hes never really on the ground plenty of depth ???
jayscrazzy obsessions What is the substrate and temperature in that tank again? A species like bumblebees might do ok with plenty of leaf litter.
Aquarimax it's two parts sphagnum moss two 1/2 parts coconut fiber and one part sand .... I think I'd need more leaves and 75 farenheit
jayscrazzy obsessions with a decent amount of crushed and whole leaf litter, bumblebees might do well...you have isopods in there already, correct?
Aquarimax yea I do have isopods as well
jayscrazzy obsessions isopods and millipedes don’t necessarily get along well, unfortunately, but some people have success with it.
Do you keep ants you cN also start in the ant hobby!
Ants cyprus I had a pretty successful ant colony for about 3 years. I may well keep ants again someday...they are fascinating creatures! 😊👍
Are they poisoning
