      I remember thinking about that, and concluded that it’s because when people leave the right it’s because they realize that they’re being lied to, and when people leave the left it’s because people called them out for lying or for having a malicious worldview. It’s been pretty consistent.

    Felt a bit bad for Jimmy cause it sounded like something had instilled this sense or urge in him that he absolutely MUST apologize for his views and be ready to defend them as if they were being debated, he's clearly been exposed to debatelord spaces too much even for all the good its done him.

  • @PaulOrtiz
    @PaulOrtiz 13 днів тому +9

    I don't know if "the right" as a loose kinda entity is clever or organised enough to have actually done this but it FEELS like they've waged a war of attrition. Saying and doing freak/ghoul shit requires minimal energy. Combatting it and denouncing it and doing lengthy clever articles on why it's wrong, takes effort and time. And as time's gone on, I think people have grown tired of or apathetic towards it. Like "oh they're calling Nigel racist again...he's still here so maybe they're overreacting". Or perhaps more accurately "yeah but he isn't afraid to say it how it is".Just pointing out what these people are, over and over again, no longer has any power. They don't care. All they have to do is keep appealing to peoples most basic, fearful impulses. And you can't even combat that with like, hope. Or real change. Because the opposition exists to prop up all the same systems and institutions that are actually doing the harm.
    So like. Wtf can you do?

    I completely agree with the focus on economics and material conditions stuff
    I follow NoJusticeMTG who is a leftist streamer in the UK who I highly recommend, she is a trans woman but she never talks about trans issues EVER; she focuses almost entirely on the economics of some news item in UK politics which is what we should be doing.
    Because obsessing over the social liberal issues gives the right an excuse to fight the culture war.
    Whereas if you focus on class solidarity and material conditions and uniting people in that way, social issues of rights for groups of people will come by a kind of osmosis through that unity
    That’s a big way for the left to move forward.

    • @hinasakukimi
      @hinasakukimi 12 днів тому +2

      where it gets difficult tho is that certain communities may have worse material conditions, and some people either can't (or don't want to) understand the difference between equity and equality. how do we address that?

      @lindsaypollock597 10 днів тому +1

      @@hinasakukimiGood point and I think the answer is: gotta do both. They're not mutually contradictory. But if we focus exclusively on the social liberal stuff, it makes us easy to attack, and easily divided and conquered.

    • @solabis
      @solabis 9 днів тому +1

      You say that as if the right needed an excuse to stir up cultural wars? As if these attacks arent a concerted effort to scapegoat marginalised groups in times of crisis so the status quo can be maintained? I get the sentiment and agree we should prioritise bread and buttter issues, and many on the left already do. but why can’t we do both at the same time? Why must marginalised groups be sacrificed until our rights can be achieved through ‘osmosis’ - which isnt a thing. Better economic conditions will make fighting for rights easier but neither socialism or communism is a magic solution for white supremacy or transphobia.

    I'm from The Netherlands, and I saw a livestream from one of our national parties, GroenLinks, where they had Bernie Sanders as a guest when he was here in The Netherlands about a year ago. Basically most things he was talking about was already in place as either policy or legislation in our country to some extent, and the things he mentioned were already in the party's program, sometimes the party's program was even more demanding. And GroenLinks isn't even considered the most left-wing party here, that would probably be "Partij voor de Dieren" (Party for the Animals).
    Talking about "left wing" versus "right wing" is all context. We should drop the "left vs right" rhetoric, and focus on our ideals instead. Because there are also right-wing politicians who have a point (Adam Kinzinger), and left-wing politicians who botch everything (John Fetterman). But at the end of the day, we all want to do better, and it's not the fault of either "the right" or "the left", it's the fault of the policies we have in place...

      @ I’ve been homeless, in a country not dissimilar to his, but I never fully brought into the alt right like he did, the extreme hate for muslims in particular was enough for me to avoid that stuff like the plague. I think it’s a mistake to look for a way to reach people without empathy. Mark my words, if this guy stays in Destiny type debate lord spaces he’ll slip right back into reactionary thinking. Destiny is already very reactionary, and attracts unhinged people who will devote their time to unhinged attacks. Looking for a way to attract people to leftist ideas without empathy will not work, people are empathetic by nature.

    • @Binckle
      @Binckle 7 днів тому +1

      @@aviendha1154 fair. I guess it's also dependant on the temperament of the person in question. I just see the arguments based on selfisheness as a stepping stone. The people in those alt right spaces have already been deeply primed to be selfish and not extend their empathy outside of their immediate social circle. So if you only argue based on empathy only those people you're trying to pull away can easily dismis your logic. In my opinion you cant replace someones worldview all at once, it has to be step by step and the selfish argument is a good tool to begin that reform.
      However, i absolutely agree that it is not a good stance in and of itself and if not pushed further they will fall back into the alt right.

    • @aviendha1154
      @aviendha1154 7 днів тому +1

      @ oh yeah definitely. We have all the non empathetic arguments already, after the suuuuper tragic death of that healthcare executive right wing spaces online have been pointing out that Americans pay more for worse outcomes. They know the facts, and those who don’t can learn them just as easily as this bloke has. It’s empathy they’re lacking, the question he should be asking is how do you teach empathy to those who don’t value it, not how do I strip empathy from leftist economic and social issues so that nobody who listens to me has to question why they’re more comfortable with fascism than they are universal healthcare, or a functioning visa system, labour right etc. it’s the bandaid VS why did you cut yourself approach. It smells off is my point, he’s not in a place where he’s going to be producing great content. He’s probably better off doing things IRL with other people, and coming back to something like this when he understands more what he’s doing.

He is just prepping his next point. I just think he needs to slow down a bit or something. i thought what he was doing there was pretty obvious no? hasan is a socialist and jimmy is just shifting from being on the right to being like a social democrat.
      hasan doesn’t want to scare him off or get into a combative debate over materialist analysis or some shit.
      he wants to have a chill convo with the guy to introduce him to some leftist ideas and how social democracy falls short a bit. especially with how most people are primed against hasan with how hated he is online he was clearly trying to keep things chill and friendly to just guide jimmy to some new ideas that he can look into himself.
      like it’s a bit early for hasan to start telling him about small business tyrants and the petite bourgeoisie and temporarily embarrassed millionaires. he made clear he likes that part of capitalism and clearly has an attachment to the “entrepreneur” vision of the world. it would be a poor choice to make the convo into a debate by trying to upend his worldview completely.
