Good job of explaining how an oil filter works for people that don't have much of a clue on this subject. I live in North Carolina where Purolator (Fayetteville) and WIX (Gastonia) plants are located. They are both now owned by the German filter Company, Mann-Hummel. They made alot of changes at Purolator, like firing Prodution Supervisor's and experienced workers and Quality Control employees! They hired new low wage workers and Temp workers to cut cost's and eliminated several steps on the production side to save money. That is when the problems with media tearing, off center end caps, sloppy glueing, and bad spacing of filter media(wide gaps) reared it's ugly head! They have gotten better lately, but not all of the problems such as wide spacing and too much glue have been eliminated. Wix filter was also purchased by Mann-Hummel, but it has been left alone so far, just like when DANA bought Wix out years ago. Then AFFINIA Group bought WIX from DANA. There are some filter numbers for Wix and NAPA that are made by Purolater, the box will have Mann-Hummel on them! They are Purolater filters with a WIX/NAPA sticker on them. Wix specs their filters differently than all other filter manufacturers. Their BETA flow specs are rated totally different! If you call their TECH Line, they are very helpful and friendly. I used to get lucky when I called and I got to speak with the Head of testing ,Design, and The Technical writer for their products. He was awesome to talk to, and would divulge info that was off limits. If you asked a certain question that he couldn't just tell you, he would give a for instance question and you could get a conformation that way. I asked about the NAPA Silver or PRO-SELECT. He said the PRO-SELECT was a much better filter and cost's less also. He explained to me that oil and air filters become more efficient after they are put in use. This makes almost what would be common sense if you think about it. The micron level of particles that are being captured would be smaller and smaller the longer the filter is in service! They become way more efficient over time as the larger pores fill up with particles and the smaller one's start doing their designed job! No filter can be absolute in capturing all particles as there would be no flow. That is why filter media's are made of different materials and have countless pore sizes. The cheap paper(cellulose) are good for 3-5000 miles,or 6 months. That is about all the paper can take before it starts to rupture and fail. The enhanced cellulose synthetic fiber filters can be ran up to around 10,000 miles before thay start failing. Some enhanced cellulose filters( MOBIL1A) filters claim up to 20,000 miles. Some enhanced cellulose filters are just chemically treated with a coating (RESIN) for efficiency and longevity. Check the box for the filter manufacter recommended mileage warranty. Fully synthetic fiber filters start off less efficient then over time get way more efficient than cellulose fiber filters and can hold way more dirt before clogging. They can and are designed to last longer and can take engine heat cycles better than paper elements. Sorry for the long reply, but there is so much info on this subject. You can research and read for days and days! I hope this helps someone out there get a better understanding of how filtration works.1/31/2020. PEACE...
The Motorcraft is a good filter and a great value. The FL400 for my Ford truck is $3.97 at my local Walmart. 206,000 miles and going strong. Oil changes at the recommended intervals is the crucial factor, not filter choice.
All my life, my dad used Fram Filters on all his vehicles. He maintained and rebuilt his own engines. So he put a lot of hard work and money into his cars and trucks and Fram Filters is what he chose to put in them. I followed his lead and I have put Fram Filters in all my vehicles for the past 30 years. Not one single issue or problem. I have a 2000 Ford Explorer with almost 300,000 miles on it and Fram is all that SUV has seen.
Thankyou for the detailed and in-depth explanation here. Ur more knowledgeable than 90% ppl on internet regarding true working of the very important modern oil filter!
On cold starts to avoid lifter tick you place your vehicle in what they call oil flood mode. This allows cranking of the engine without starting but allows oil pump to run oil up into crank cam lifters and valve trains and filter priming after oil changes. To do this basically based on vehicle manufactures you press accelerator to the floor or the accelerator and brake and crank the engine it will not allow engine to start but allow oil pump to prime filter and pressurize the rest of the engine.
Thanks for being forthright in stating that your analysis of the different features and brands is personal opinion, and that the filter engineers know what they are doing in design of filters.
To start Im very educated on this subject of oil filters and fluids. All these filters you have are good. Cheapest being the motorcraft made by purolator. Best filter on the table is the fram ultra and one the best values for well constructed filters. It's actually over built for most applications as it has 2 types of media that is wire backed. Close second is mobil filter. Another very good filter. I use alot of of napa golds, which is a wix filter ,due to napas 2 time a year filter sale and I stock up due to napa golds sale price usually around 2 to 3 bucks a filter. Awesome deal. Now the platinum filter u have there is the most expensive of all these but has least particle size filtration. Well made and good filter but not as good when it comes to filtration. I would use them tho and not worry but cost steers me to napa golds. I like to use good filters as it makes me feel better but oil filters dont do as much as u think especially after a motor is well broken in. I just buy better filters for cheap filter price so I use them. The most important filter on your vehicle is the air filter. Use good air filters and do not (yes I said do not) change them until they are dirty and need changing and change right before an oil change and not right after and install correctly. Air filtration is key to engine life along with oil changes.
Fyi, standard Wix and Napa Gold, have a beta of 20=20 meaning 95% @ 20um which is pretty darn good. The Napa Gold for this application has dome bypass. The vast majority of Wix, Napa Gold have thread end bypass. Ultra is an excellent filter and the only Fram filter I'll use.
Anti-drain back valves can leak oil back through the oil pump into the sump. This causes the oil filter to empty itself and that is bad for the engine as you have a dry start every time you start the engine after sitting for a few days. My 4.0 Jeep engine with a Wix (from NAPA) filter did this and the valve lifter clatter was the major clue to a filter filled with air. The filter is mounted horizontally to the side of the block. I had a Wix engineer come out and I filled the filter with oil, plugged the discharge with my thumb, turned the filter on its side, and we watched oil flow out past the anti-drain back valve. Just because a part is new does not make it good.
Kelly t You can use all these filters without a problem. This video really gets into the small details and does narrow which oil filter to choose from. In the end, it's up to you to decide what oil filter suits you're type of driving style.
@@TheRichardF10 There isn't much to choose when most over keen do it themselves people will be tempted to change their oil and filters long before they need to anyway! so worrying about the bypass valve on say the Fram being a little concerning! is not an issue ...
All this detail I have NEVER known about in my 57 years. I have always changed oil frequently with a new filter usually the one on sale or maybe a mid grade. Never knew why I should pay more for a filter b/c no one ever told me why. Have gotten 168000 on my 74 mercury. 175000 on the 78 Bonneville. 163000 on my 88 vw fox. 285000 on my 99 Prizm. Etc. All pretty high mileage considering the era and build of the car. Used to change every 2k. Now 5k.
Used a napa gold filter on my CVPI last time and was great. switched to motorcraft this time and seems like i'm getting drain back, sounds like lifters rattling on start up. Didn't have that with the napa filter. Liked your video ! Cheers !
I used to be a Fram hater but all of them have their use cases. The most important thing is not what you use, it's using it right. Replace oil often and you will have less problems.
Cheap isn't always the best they're junk. Spend an extra $4 for a better brand so the next person that buys your car doesn't have to replace your mistake
@@TheMstwntdLMSV123 next time you do a oil change put some in a bottle and send it off for testing I promise there's gonna be more metal shaving and other materials that shouldn't be in your engine compared to other vehicles that actually used a decent filter. Matter fact cut open your Fram filter its literally cardboard paper inside lmao. JUNK. Won't be long till your car starts having issues and your gonna act like you don't know why it happened
The Fram Ultra is a double lined filter media so it's very good quality for the price point. I've been running the Ultra Synthetic for several years. It's a valid point about a dented filter housing, so don't use any filter that's dented. Return it. As far as the other issues, if they become a problem, I'm sure Fram will address them. I was surprised to see the Mobil 1 and the Napa Gold are both a fiber element. I had been under the impression that both were full synthetic elements. And the Wix Platinum was a very poor looking filter for a full synthetic, supposedly top quality unit. Definitely some quality control issues there. Thank you for posting a very well laid out thoughtful video. You covered the relevant points about how the filters work and their construction. You didn't pick the basic Fram Extra Guard and poo poo it as a poor filter compared to the other higher end filters like some on UA-cam like to do. If I see another one of those videos, I'll link this video in the comments section as a more valid comparison next to their video.
This is the best filter tutorial I’ve seen yet and I’ve seen a lot of good ones! Thank you for all the time, effort and money it took to do this presentation! Excellent Job!
Best damn oil filter review I have ever seen. Great job! Unbiased and a little surprising the Napa platinum/wix XP had bad build quality. For the money the fram ultra is a good buy and a fairly well made filter. I am NOT a fan of fram by any means...I think they suck except for the ultra. Can you do more oil filter reviews please.
Best oil filter review on UA-cam!!! The Napa Platinum filter is the reason I don't like the spring than a metal leaf. Since the spring is right in the middle of the can there is a chance that the filter can go to either side and make an opening by the drain back valve.
Rest assured every filter on that table has a throughput far higher than the pump rate of any typical automobile, 98% of vehicles on the road will have a flow rate limited by the oil pump alone. Folks like to debate about which filter is more restrictive than others (which is fine) but what is never taken into consideration is the flow rate of the oil pump (which is typically 2.5-3 gallons per min). Short of a cold start at -40 (it does happen here in North Dakota) your oil filter will not be the limiting factor in the sense of flow rate. Even than it would be on the viscosity of the oil and not the filter (which is why we have bypass valves in filters). You would need a rather high end high flow oil pump meant for strictly racing to even come near the point where the filter would cause restriction in the system and even than once again bypass valve.
A lot of good information. Normally I don't watch videos that are this long. Worth watching if you want to understand how your oil filter functions. Thanks!
The plastic bypass valves will partially open at full pressure which makes the filter worthless. I would only use filters with the metal spring type bypass. Mobil1 and Wix XP are excelent filters. Fram are called the Orange Can of Death for a reason...
Thanks for the in depth review. I have been using the Fram Ultra with Pennzoil Platinum in my 2013 Ford Explorer since the first oil change no issues. I think I’ll stick with those for now but the Mobil 1 doesn’t look bad either.
I'm glad I stumbled across this video. I've used mobil 1 extended performance filters for years and I need to buy another one and noticed it's a new version but, on the website for the new version they don't list the silicone anti drain back valve so I was concerned they stopped using them. However I see from your video they are still using them. I guess they just forgot to list that feature.

I see coil springs springs broken in other applications ( transmission accumulators) I dont see the drain back spring being a deal breaker. The design of the Fram drain back valve is a little sketchy, but overall i like it the best.
What about the seal on the base. I had a Wix filter, made in China (some were found to be made in the US when I did research) this seal was asymmetric and blew out destroying the Mitsubishi Lancer engine. Wix then closed down in Australia and after having ARP bolts in america deny a claim on a connecting rod bolt failure through the knerl on their HP bolts I decided not to wast my time. I now use exclusively Ryco Australian filters. So check your base O ring, thick symmetrical, square and firm is the go.
The filter cleans small debris, if it stops up or needs to clean more you have engine problems or didn't change oil properly. The filter only is used for 5 to 10,000 miles ,change regularly with oil.I use motorcraft never had engine problems.Use synthetic blend.
for applications (like most) where the filter is installed with the threads up, It appears that the anti drain back valve is useless and never used. it would only be active if the filter is installed upside down. Correct?
Over the years of helping friends change their oil/filters I have come across three Fram extra Guard filters with the filter media absolutely loose and rattling around inside. It was like the flat spring thing at the bottom was gone. When holding the filter with the inlet and outlet openings up the filter element fell to the bottom and there was about a half inch space between the top of the filter element and where the invisible anti drainback valve should have been. These filters would have been doing absolutely nothing! I didn't open them but it was like the bottom spring and the anti drainback valve were either never there or they were magically dissolved by the oil. I can't imagine that fram made these three filters simply for my entertainment so it makes one wonder how frequently these failed fram filters are changed out at oil change shops without anyone making note of the frequency of failed ones.
Definitely liked n subscribed! Awesome video, I do look forward to more videos, perhaps on engine air filters comparison, engine oil testing/comparison and many other automotive related testing (fuel additives, oil additives, etc).
Check out the Amsoil filter built by Donaldson I believe is designed like they’re endurance premium commercial filters, impressive but fairly expensive! I believe Donaldson sells them only though Amsoil in the auto size filters?
The real question on all these filters is how good do they need to be. If you run an engine for 7000 miles on synthetic oil, at what point did the filter go into bypass mode? If the filter is still cleaning the oil at 7000 miles it is a good filter. If it is in bypass at 2000 miles, its junk. So the real test would be to put each filter on the same engine and monitor activation of the bypass. The finer the mesh- the earlier the bypass would be my expectation.
Napa Gold/Wix is looking like a pretty good design for the wife’s Forester! The filter sits upright so that strong tension on the anti-drain back valve would be beneficial keeping that oil in the filter while parked. PLUS, the bypass valve then, by definition, would be at the TOP of the set-up, keeping the metal particles from being recirculated in the case the bypass valve is activated. Like another commenter, I think I’ll stock up on the next Napa sale. AND I think they’re made in ‘Merica! lol
The NAPA/WIX oil filters have the weaker Coil Spring. Everybody else got rid of that crap and put in the stronger Leaf Spring, like the expensive Amsoil & Royal Purple oil filters use. Question: What does "upright" mean !?? "Holes Up!" or "Holes Down!" The most hot-rodded engine in the world has been the Small-Block Chevy -- it's oil filter is mounted "Holes Up!", which is generally considered to be "upright".
@@SlikLizrd been a long time since I posted that. Wife now has the Soul so it literally does have the holes facing the sky. I like that because I'm one of those silly guys that likes to prefill the filter
I am confused. So does the Napa Gold/Platinum (e.g. Wix) have dome-side bypass, or thread-side bypass? Seem to have conflicting info told at different areas in this video...
What many videos do not show is how Motorcraft Filters are one of only few companies using a thread end bypass, Wix, Napa, and Royal Purple all had outstanding design and when they got bought out, the designs changed and in my opinion they are a cheap design. No longer made with highest quality. Royal Purple Filters, Napa Gold and Wix have all changed from a nice steel base plate with thread end bypass, Silicone ADBV, evenly spaced holes and steel coil spring, solid canister casing. It would be interesting comparison how they have changed. Now Purolator is better than those. I currently use Motorcraft although I know they use a leaf spring and the Purolator is a decent design, the Boss is nice and it shows filter media is better than Motorcraft. Not a fan of dome end bypass. Many new oil filters displayed in videos don't even come close to what RP and Napa Wix used to be years ago. The new ACDelco E core is an embarrassment. Why do these companies think they can change a proven design and still have a loyal following for a cheaper product. They must think customers don't notice. I expected K and N to be higher quality, the dome end bypass design is cheap and does not look built with durability.
I just used a Motorcraft filter on my 1988 Lincoln Town Car. It is what I had at the time. I was going to get a more expensive filter but didn't do that this time.
Thanks, nice overviews:: be nice to see proven lab results in; particles, analysis, longevity’s, & engineered results (tear downs, durabilities), realizing OEM HAS SOME OF THIS info, too.
@@Gatorsrok Really bro? I'm not even a Fram guy and those Ultras are great filters. One of the best. Along with RP and Purolator boss. The Wix XPs are literally the most overrated of the bunch. Bad efficiency numbers and weak spring
I agree, however people go to great lengths to avoid changing their Oil & Filter. If anybody changes oil by the manufacturers recommendation are BD. Change UR damn Oil & Filter, don't wait - do it. Engines LOVE clean oil.
Sally Hillal Most don’t, Amsoil and Royal Purple (nearly the same filter, BTW) filters are the best 4.6/5.4 filters on the market. If only they had the Motorcraft thread end bypass valve
Dwain S&w - I agree with you! I worked aerospace for 40 years and every filter shown really sucks as far as overall quality of materials, integrity of components, and assembly. There are some real cheesy components in these filters. I’m ashamed of Ford (MC) which I have to use under warranty, no less. F-150 3.5 Ecoboost 5W-30 Syn blend.
All these videos about Oil Filters Leave out the most important part. I.e. The Area of the filter material and the degree to which they filter. In other words how small a particle will the filter capture. The Mileage capability is easily determined.... You can use Filter design for synthetic oil on conventional oil. Look for about 20 micro filtration..... The filters designed for Synthetic go for longer mileage... I am look for those Filters for a conventional engine.
Some oil filters like the cartridges don’t even have ADBV. They are slid on a stick or just placed in. Mercedes and other very expensive cars have cartridges.
👏 bravo sir I’m a hard critic and I thought you did a excellent job. Video was a bit long but explained well in detail. Only question you didn’t answer is. Whats better filter flow or filter micron rating for say a challenger 6.4 hemi. Or will the relief valve come into play? I subscribed by the way. I was so impressed with the job you did.
A lot depends on the intended use of the vehicle. For daily driving, the focus should be on Micron Rating for maximum particle capture -- and a 5,000- mile oil & filter change. For high-performance driving, you'll want to go for a high-flow filter and a 3,000-mile oil & filter change. In either case, a FILTERMAG #SS365PR Magnet Kit will offer MAXIMUM protection, regardless of type of oil OR filter is used.
It would be interesting to see you add a Fleetguard filter to your lineup. I work at an International dealer and most people swear by those filters, they also have a line for smaller engines as well.

Baldwin, Filter for 2007 Crown Victoria please as well as Hastings LF110 made by Baldwin these are super solid filters curious to see how the pleets inside are. Thanks.
Good detailed review...... Have you or do you know of anyone that has done the same comparison for the same competitors filters but for the newer “Cartridge type” filters? I have used FRAMs in the past mainly due to the anti skid coating to help with filter removal. Recently switched to Mobil 1 and feel confident with the 6,000 mile change interval. I started on Purolator back when I first started with oil changes but that was also a time when they still had 3,000 intervals. I have started recently with Mobil 1 mainly because I use the M1 oil and usually the filter is right across the same aisle, different shelf. I had not thought about the cheap can design but with more and more cartridge type filters the metal of the casing will be less of an issue....Still some risk but lessened.
My questions would be it’s cold out and I only have 5w 20 mobile one and the book at the store gave me the wrong filter I got the top end mobile oil filter what do I do use the oil because I’m now over my oil change by far on a 80,000 mile 3800 serious 2 gm motor I’m in Wisconsin it’s cold out and I have all this fillet synthetic mobile one and with the filter is there anyway to get a filter replaced from mobile
Super tech oil filter is not the same as napa gold. Super tech uses rubber drain back valve. The filter median on the S.T. is cheaper made, not synthetic blend like the Napa gold.
Really the only time I blew out an engine was when I had aleak and didn't keep on top of it .. Ran it without and blew it out on highway .. Rod came thru crankcase wall
most people are down on the Fram "orange can" as it is a low budget level economy based oil filter. Instead of metal endcaps - everything is paper/cardboard like. The pleat spacing is irregular - and they do not use the silicone anti-drainback valve. The Fram Ultra filter is on the entire other end of the quality spectrum - being an elite level construction, media, filtration efficiency and every other design function. It's like comparing a Ford Pinto (orange can) to a Ford Crown Victoria (Ultra) as far as quality.
Yeah Ford has always been good **except for the stuff designed for them by navistar/international from 2002 til recently (the infamous 6.0 and 6.4 diesels were badly done by navistar so I get them cheap and replace the navistar designed crap with the updated Ford re-designs that fix all the issues)
Been using Fram on and off for 20 years on multiple vehicles. No problems what so ever. I use them for 2000- 3000 miles and I change them. If you use them for extended miles like 7000- 10,000 miles ur gonna end up with a problem. Unfortunately ever since the bug caught on that, " dont use fram". " it's gonna blow up ur egine". "Don't do it". Well guess what? I been doing it. My current vehicle has 270,000 + miles on it. Running strong. That's because i service my vehicle. The best oil filter on the planet will mess up ur engine if don't service it and leave it in ur engine indefinitely.
I would like to get your opinion on the new Purolator BOSS. The filter media I believe to 100% synthetic. Not sure how good the bypass and drain-back are though. The outside shell is extremely thick.
Best filter made in my opinion is the Purolator One & Boss filters. Thats what i use on both of my vehicles. I use Baldwin filters on all my mowers. NO WAY IN HELL will i ever again buy or use a Fram filter.
I been told that if I keep using that dam Fram oil filter, that my engine will end up with catastrophic results. Im gonna keep using that dam Fram oil filter.
QUESTION? Do the filters catch debris on the inside or outside of the media? In other words would any metallic or other debris get caught on the inside or outside of the pleats? Thanks to anybody for answering.....
I have a ? on your car dose your oil cooler line have a vibration and in the area of my lines there is a loud buzzing noise but once it warms up it goes away I was reading on a form that the anti drain back valve can cause this but it has done this for a while I always blamed it on the power steering pump because that's kind of what it sounds like but today I was under it when it did it and it was coming from the oil cooler lines. Thanks
The motorcraft doesn't have the same grip as the others. I use the socket style in my explorer because it is so hard to use a wrench most filters use the standard tool except the motorcraft.
FFS is Wix a better filter than Motorcraft or not? I am NOT an engineer for Motors. I have the same vehicle different year and it's not a P1 2011 LX. it's great giving this information but I think it's useless for people like myself. what I am more worried about these counterfeit filters that are out there.
Nice job but i cant determine if you helped me more or stressed me out
Kelly t You can use all these filters without a problem.
Now 5k.
Thanks for excellent explanation and review - the best I have seen. Differential pressure, filtration efficiency - that's what makes good filter.
Used a napa gold filter on my CVPI last time and was great. switched to motorcraft this time and seems like i'm getting drain back, sounds like lifters rattling on start up. Didn't have that with the napa filter. Liked your video ! Cheers !
I currently have Fram oil filter in my car. The cheapest one. 267,000+ miles and running strong!
I used to be a Fram hater but all of them have their use cases. The most important thing is not what you use, it's using it right. Replace oil often and you will have less problems.
U are one of the few sir!
Cheap isn't always the best they're junk. Spend an extra $4 for a better brand so the next person that buys your car doesn't have to replace your mistake
@@wetch5402 it's not a mistake if the car is still perfectly fine
I have several other filters and plan on more videos.
I was going to say the same about best oil filter review I have ever seen
Wix are made in China
I agree with you on fram there is huge difference in build quality between their top of the line and lower tiers.
Fram sure grip
Best oil filter review on UA-cam!!!
The Napa Platinum filter is the reason I don't like the spring than a metal leaf. Since the spring is right in the middle of the can there is a chance that the filter can go to either side and make an opening by the drain back valve.
Malith Perera , Thanks. How was that; filter to either side you found?
Ps, I use NAPA PLATINUM IN MY 2007 GMC CANYON, AND 2015 Journey 4 CYLS.....
Err,, I use NAPA GOLD oil filters

Why did you not stretch out the filter media? Show us the length of the paper.
Thanks for the video my Explorer uses this same filter and it's nice to see how the aftermarket compares
The wide pleats on the motorcraft filter were designed like that for oil flow and greater dirt retention.
Correct?
Or sideways.
Great review even for me in Australia with our 5.4 boss
Tried hard to put Fram down but just couldn't really do it.
tried to put a fram on me engine, but it refused.
The Truth Hurts
"Holes Up!" or "Holes Down!"
The most hot-rodded engine in the world has been the Small-Block Chevy -- it's oil filter is mounted "Holes Up!", which is generally considered to be "upright".
Made in USA is best! 🇺🇸
@@SlikLizrd been a long time since I posted that. Wife now has the Soul so it literally does have the holes facing the sky. I like that because I'm one of those silly guys that likes to prefill the filter

Wish you would have included a Ford Racing filter.
I am confused. So does the Napa Gold/Platinum (e.g. Wix) have dome-side bypass, or thread-side bypass?
Seem to have conflicting info told at different areas in this video...
A starting point with some good information for that someone who know's nothing about oil filters...
Just watched your video. You made one of the best videos for in depth oil filter comparisons. Thank you very much! Subscribed
Platinum has a wire backed media keeping the pleats in place
I just used a Motorcraft filter on my 1988 Lincoln Town Car. It is what I had at the time. I was going to get a more expensive filter but didn't do that this time.
Thanks, nice overviews:: be nice to see proven lab results in; particles, analysis, longevity’s, & engineered results (tear downs, durabilities), realizing OEM HAS SOME OF THIS info, too.
How about looking at MOPAR OEM, And PERFORMAX ( made in Mexico ones), and ACDELCO?

Very good review. What about Bosch oil filters or Amsoil oil filters?
Bosch Filtech is excellent an under $8
Sally Hillal Most don’t, Amsoil and Royal Purple (nearly the same filter, BTW) filters are the best 4.6/5.4 filters on the market. If only they had the Motorcraft thread end bypass valve
So, when is good enough good enough. Seems there is a lot of discussion of a lot of differences without distinction.
Put the Motorcraft thread end bypass setup in a Amsoil EaO11 or Royal Purple 20-820 and you will have the ultimate FL-820S cross ref filter.
I Love people like you. I assume your a good man. A family man. Wish I had a dad like you maybe I would have turned out better!
Confirmed never using Fran again. Can’t believe I used to, on my old 02 explorer.
*due to the crappy anti drainback valve
I don't think the filter helped or hurt your ""crappy old Explorer" They don't call them Exploders for nothing 😅
@@MrRupus2020 only reason I’m not still driving it is because my brother totaled it. Now my 08 explorer.. still daily driving after seven years and 330k on the odometer. Gonna probably be another seven years before the frame even starts to rot..

I read Fram Ultra is the best at this current moment, even better than Amsoil EAO because it is on par with it but much cheaper.
Regardless what people say about Fram, the Ultra is at least 'good enough'
Thanks for making the video, thumbs up.
I’ve heard good things about the super tech filter at Walmart that it’s a quality filter made by wix and same inside as Napa gold also made by wix
I don't trust anything that isn't manufactured by purolator (like motorcraft is)
Super tech oil filter is not the same as napa gold.
A nice feature not mentioned on Fram Ultra is the grip surface. You can tighten it up easily with greasy hands.
Do a video of the Ford racing CM 6731 FL82 oil filter
Would love to see a comparison of the regular to the FR version
Saw a tear down video by Steven Cox - he was very down on FRAM.
most people are down on the Fram "orange can" as it is a low budget level economy based oil filter.
Ford has always made great parts... Motorcraft filter is very high quality for the price.
Honestly I'd just stick with K&N and mobile 1.
Why Napa gold is like 7 dollars
@Schlo 7G
K & N is one of the least expensive filters available for my vehicle.
Michael Kuzma dutton me too
Been using Fram on and off for 20 years on multiple vehicles.
FRAM OIL FILTERS ARE JUNKS !!!!!!!!!!!!
great job!!! thanks for sharing.
I would like to get your opinion on the new Purolator BOSS. The filter media I believe to 100% synthetic. Not sure how good the bypass and drain-back are though. The outside shell is extremely thick.
Best Purolator filter ever made!
The Boss is the BEST synthetic oil filter made. Hands down. I use them.
Great explanation. Thank you!
Best filter made in my opinion is the Purolator One & Boss filters. Thats what i use on both of my vehicles. I use Baldwin filters on all my mowers. NO WAY IN HELL will i ever again buy or use a Fram filter.

QUESTION?
Do the filters catch debris on the inside or outside of the media?
In other words would any metallic or other debris get caught on the inside or outside of the pleats?
Thanks to anybody for answering.....
HYDRA DYNAMIC outside
Debris is caught on the outside side of the filter. Oil flows in the small holes and out the large center hole.
Does anyone know if Hastings filters are any good? I have never found one in a video
I have had a few 4.6 Crown Vics. The Motorcraft is the only way to go, the only one that doesn't rattle a bit when cold started.
Is the Mobil one extended media not synthetic?

Why don't you make a better video or stfu
Fine print on the Fram is "ABOVE" 20 MICRON AT 99% what isn't clear is what it actually is 30,40,50? It is not stated and why I will never use them.
I have a ? on your car dose your oil cooler line have a vibration and in the area of my lines there is a loud buzzing noise but once it warms up it goes away I was reading on a form that the anti drain back valve can cause this but it has done this for a while I always blamed it on the power steering pump because that's kind of what it sounds like but today I was under it when it did it and it was coming from the oil cooler lines. Thanks
Does champ labs make acDelco /k&n same internals?
The motorcraft doesn't have the same grip as the others. I use the socket style in my explorer because it is so hard to use a wrench most filters
use the standard tool except the motorcraft.
If that paper plugs up you don't want a high pressure relief valve. I got a set of rod bearings to show you why!
I stopped buying stuff on eBay because of that reason. if anybody can let me know if that particular filter Wix will be better for my CV 2011 LX or not. Thank you. Next
I use Fram Ultra. It's always built well and looks in great shape after I remove it after 6 months of use.
I will take the Mobil 1 just for mental confidence.
Reality check n is that being a 36 year auto tech working on fleet vehicles " Cars, pickup trucks , vans , medium trucks, class 8 trucks etc=that are properly maintained yet run hard and put away withn out care from the drivers. I doubt that you will never notice the the difference in engine life due to the choice of a decent oil filter. The air filter is the important filter on an engine.
the spacing on the motorcraft media is terrible
