i work for home depot and i can tell you most of this on this list is accurate. The discretion of giving matches on coupons and stuff like that is usually based on the competitor and item. In some cases we won't even have to use the coupon but instead depending on a low dollar amount match it just to get you the item. Alot of times we will give the best customer service and even go a bit beyond depending on the customer interaction. I work in the ny area and i can tell you i've done it so yes it does work. We just can't double dip...give a 10 % and give a coupon on top. Something like that we can't do but in SOME RARE CASES if its a huge purchase and you get a manager involved, they may do it as a one time service and take the markdown hit to appease you and have you come back for any other future purchasing transaction. Remember don't be afraid to ask, we trying to get rid of it. Not have it sit on our shelves and as always thank you for shopping at your home depot

@@TH-vc5sl you could try to ask but sometimes they may not do it because the market in different provinces is priced differently...a lawnmower that sells for 100 in long island may sell for 80 elsewhere because the demand and marketing for it is higher. Again they may do it or offer an alternative which sometimes may end up benefiting you. Remember their motto is to not let you leave empty handed.

Former service desk supervisor here. This list is very accurate. One thing I would add is that if you have a bad experience than make sure to tell your cashier. They will attempt to make it up to you with a discount, usually 10% off- up to $50 max without needing manager approval, also if you have a good experience make sure you find a manager or supervisor and let them know. Also an email to the company is greatly appreciated. Also, aside from their store credit card they have a project loan program...similar to the credit card, but it is a one project only thing. You get approved for a particular amount and have 6 months to make all of your purchases for the project. Once the 6 month window closes you no longer have access to the funds. It is a nice alternative to a credit card that is always open and begging for you to use it.

As a former Assistant Store Manager at Home Depot, the price end cent is 100% true. $1.03 for example really means 3 weeks before it goes down to a penny in our system which is the sign that we have to take it off the shelves and it either goes back to the vendor or dumped if the vendor doesn't want it. Great tips Matt!

I also just got to the competitor coupon part. I worked in 3 stores as an ASM, and 2 of the 3 accepted competitor coupons. It really is up to the store manager or sometimes the assistant manager working at the time. I always accepted them because that creates a repeat happy customer!

    • @dlang6487
      @dlang6487 3 роки тому +7

@@thacker_6420 Yes it will but Department Heads get a report of penny skus to take off the shelf right before they drop to a penny. If they miss something, then it will ring up as a penny. Cashier's are told to not sell it and say it's not for sale. If you ask manager, depending the person, they may just say whatever or will say it's not for sale. Worst part, the penny skus (sometimes) get thrown down the dumpster.

Home Depot Employee here, I work at Customer Service. I can confirm that all of these are in fact true. It's pretty straight forward and you mentioned all the minor details that are required for some of these tricks to work, specifically having proof of purchase and such. The live plants exchange one is always a fickle and kind of a pain for D31 associates to deal with, sometimes we don't have that plant in stock, we have to clean up after the return of (really messy dirt and debris), or the customer doesn't have proof of purchase and often gets mad at us for it. Keep your receipts! Never throw them away at the store or in the parking lot, thieves can pick these up and attempt to return stolen products off your receipt. If you try to return a product back from your card and a thief already did so, it will show it as having already been returned on our system. Most of the time they do this with debit receipts to get your cash.

I used to work at Home Depot and the damaged box thing is not 100% true. There is nothing that says just because a box is damaged you automatically get 10% off. It mostly depends on how nice the manager is. Some managers would say you are paying for the product not the box. Others would give discounts no questions asked. Sometimes it depends on how their budget is for markdowns that specific month.

Something that you should keep in mind when shopping Home Depot clearance yellow tags. If the tag you are looking at does not have a "was" price on the tag, then it is not on clearance. It is a regular priced item that doesn't have a home in the store and has been put on the clearance endcap because there's no other place to put it in the store.

As someone who spent nearly 200k at HD last year, you have pretty good info here. Some of the tips you gave are more store discretion. What I've found is that each store has quite a bit of discretion. I thought you under-sold the return policy a bit. You'd be shocked by what I've returned and have literally never been asked a question about it. I think they have a 3 mo return policy but after that they will still return with store credit. One other thing is the pro center bid room. If you are doing a project where you are making a purchase of $1.5k+, they will "bid" on the project which basically means they will give you a discount. The discount depends on the margin for the item. I had one electrical project where I had a bunch of items that were normally $30 marked down to $8.

Interesting about the broken boxes discount. About ten years ago I purchased a floor model couch from Dania and because it was a floor model and had a very slight ding to one of the back legs (in my place, against the wall and not visible) I negotiated the $1,200 couch down to $800. A decade later it was still in excellent condition (very well made) and I donated it to a local special-needs residence before I moved cross-country. Ever since then I always ask for a discount if something is dinged, but it never occurred to me that there could be a discount for a crunched box with no internal damage. GREAT TIP. Thank you.

#2. I got a Kitchen Aid microwave this way. they matched Best Buy and gave me the 10%. I had to push for it though. Salesperson was only going to match. I had to bring over her supervisor and pull out a printed copy of their policy and show it to him before he did it. Their retroactive price protection has worked for me in the past when I bought a large amount of flooring and then it went on sale two weeks later. Saved a bundle. I also had a water heater that had a 10 year warranty. It was probably within a month of expiring when it went out. They honored that warranty with no hassle. I've been with Home Depot for a while now. Good job on these tips. #1, #9, and #11 was new to me and I work there! When it comes to damaged box or damaged item markdown I personally give 10% to the customers that ask way too much and want to haggle with me, I won't budge. But if you are a nice customer and ask for a reasonable markdown I will give way more of a discount than you deserve, especially if we had a nice chitchat while I ring you up and you actually have a smile. Pays to be nice!
An unwritten tip: Lets say you want to buy a mid range drill and we are out of stock or it says we have it but we can't find it. Most associates who have been there a few years will offer the better model for same price as the one you wanted. As long as it's within a reasonable range. Most customers don't know this tip and go buy it at another store or maybe another Home Depot. Like I said earlier, If you come off as a nice person I will tell you about the deal and find that better model to markdown for you. But if you're a rude customer and know about this deal, I'll act dumb and pretend I don't know what deal you're talking about. Again "Pays to be nice!"

What he says about a discounted price for a damaged box is so totally true, even at other stores besides Home Depot --- I have found that merely "opening my mouth" to an employee or store-manager about a significantly-less-than-pristine item can net you great rewards; it's amazing what a store will do for you if you just ask really nicely. I recently got 25% off a grocery item merely because of moderate cosmetic damage; I was still able to salvage and use all of the product after I got it home. :D

And so I was shopping for a bathroom vanity, and cultured marble top , and
I found one I liked on display. I got a store attendant over to ask if there was
any in stock ? she came over and said, yes there was one left, so we both pulled
it out from the shelves into the aisle.
When we got it out, she said your entitled to a discount on this item -- and I
said -- why is that ? She said the box was damaged, it had a little dent in the
corner and was taped up, which was no big deal. She said, I can give you $ 40.00
off, which was pretty good ( $ 400.00 item) I then said, just jokingly, well if you
have the power to give me $ 40.00 off, then why don't you make it $ 50.00 ? She
then scribbled something on a paper , handed the paper to me, and said this is your
final discount -- and it was $ 60.00. I thought great, and took the Vanity home and
    it was in perfect condition.
Moral of the story -- if your nice and not pushy, you can get some real good discounts
at Home Depot. This just happened to me in October / 2020.

I finally asked one lady, is there ANYONE that works here who has 15 seconds to properly answer my question. She left to get someone else. After waiting for some time, she returns with another guy. He tried to direct me to the same wrong location as the first person I asked. It wasn't just the wrong location, it was a totally different item. In this whole process, I showed them pictures, multiple times, from their website of the item I needed, and not one employee would take the time to check their inventory or identify the location. They just kept guessing, "you might find it over there". After an hour of their bullshit, I gave up and left. I shouldn't have to be extra sweet to get acceptable customer service. If I ask you where to find an item, either show me where it is, or check your inventory to see if you have it. Get someone else to lick your ass, because I'm not doing it. It's amazing how often the staff at both Lowe's and Home Depot, have extremely inferior knowledge about products, or their quality or usage. On the up side, the gentleman at Home Depot who helped me with my water heater purchase, had superior knowledge about all of the products, and I learned a lot from him. He was a true professional.

When I find something that I want on clearance,I take to customer service and ask them if they're able or willing to go any lower on the price. More often than not they will drop the price an additional 10 to 15%. When they say no, I say thank you and go to the cashier and ask the same thing. The cashier will usually drop the price on that thing item. A lot of the time it's just a matter of who you're dealing with and how their day is going.

It should be on a yellow price tag. There aren't a lot of items that this will happen to. The item goes on clearance and initially is discounted and yellow tagged. The item will continue to go down in price and will often sell out before it makes it to a price ending with 3¢.
Just a word of caution. After the item reaches its final sales price ending with 3¢ the next time it goes down it will drop to 1¢. And items left in stock at that time are removed from sale and often trashed. Now if you bought one of these items previously and try to return it without a receipt guess what you'll receive for credit... If you said 1¢ you are correct. If you have your receipt or they can look up your receipt with the credit card you used, then you will get what you paid for it.

I used to work at a Home Depot ( Super Store) in customer service. On returning plants you can also add sod to that list. Again keep your receipt. On water heaters, if it’s still under warranty and it breaks down. DO NOT... uninstall it leave it hooked up. Call Home Depot first. They will give you a phone number to call. They are going to try and troubleshoot it first. The warranty people will tell you when you can uninstall it and take it to a Home Depot. If you just show up with the water heater without an authorization number you void the warranty.

I bought a house from a bank that had been repossessed, and everything was taken out of it. I had to buy all the kitchen appliances and had them delivered. The delivery people hit the fridge box with a forklift and put a small dent at the bottom of the freezer drawer. I talked to the store manager and was told it would be 2-3 weeks to get a replacement drawer, or they would refund me $100 if I kept it as is. I asked him to do better since that wasn't even 10% ( bought all appliances in a bundle deal and I believe the fridge was around $1700-$1800). He offered $300. That's when I countered with a $500 Home Depot gift card, and he accepted that. I kept the small dented door (which was barely noticeable, and I had to point it out to people when they look for it). The best part is when they rang up the refund they also refunded the sales tax so I left the store with a $535 Home Depot gift. Funny enough I was going to spend that money with them anyway because I had to rebuild 2 bathrooms and new flooring in the house. Moral is don't be afraid to negotiate a better deal, asking for a larger amount in store credit or gift card is easier since they know that money is coming back to them.

Here's the best tip I can give for buying paint: Purchase during the summer holidays Memorial-Labor Day whereas they will have a bonus coupon to save.
If you want to sample paint going to the "oops" paint you can get paint that was returned from customers the night before. It's the lowest (50 cents) you can get a sample. Associate's cannot use oops paint to custom match to a color on the wall. Once it's on the oops paint shelf that's the last shade it will be. Again, associates cannot modify/add tint to it. Best time of the day to get a great selection of oops paint: early in the morning or at the end of the night. Associates have to process the inbound returned paint at the end of the evening. If you befriend an employee they might even let you know when a shade close to what you're looking for becomes available. :)
If you want more tips on purchasing paint feel free to reply with a comment - I worked for several years in the HD paint dept which was fun and will be glad to share anymore paint purchase tips.

@@kimmyball4961 great question Kimmy. Here's what you should do with each individual can before reordering extras. Place tape over the order sticker or ask for an extra sticker for the can. Keep it as an extra receipt of paint color. With that tip in mind, it could either be an overdose of tint in the can which is shown by the individual tint amounts to create your color.
Sheen can adjust your output, where it is placed with natural lighting in the room, or even if you have swapped brands of paint.
Finally, you can bring the can back to the store for a free paint review and consult. Take note of the associate who has helped you as well for reference as needed. I do hope this helps provide some clarity.

Tip #11 Normal return policy on an item is 90 days. If you use your Home Depot credit card it is extended to 1 year.

With a HD Credit card their return policy is four times longer. You are right about 90 days VS. one year. Some of their outdoor equipment only has a 30 day return policy but with a HD CC it goes to 120 days. It's a NO HASSLE return meaning you don't have to have a reason for returning. Works great on stuff like expensive Milwaukee gloves as you know you will wear them out within a year. Keep your receipt and get brand new ones if they wear out in less than a year.

Normal return policy is 90 days with receipt or card purchased on, with the exception of gas powered products (like a mower), which is 30 days.

@@williamdebow3478 Yes. The return policy for purchasing with a THD CC is 365 days (one year). Percentage of people not having a THD CC is higher though. There are benefits for having a CC, more benefits for joining Pro Extra and any CC can be linked.

I'm also a Home Depot employee. Debit/credit cards or a receipt works at the Forest Lake location. Customers don't necessarily need a receipt. They can use credit cards or debit cards to show proof of payment.

one key thing i've found out as an employee is that if something goes on clearance and doesn't sell it eventually ends up being marked down to a penny and that's how we know to trash it or send it back to the DC. now if you can find something that has been marked down to a penny on the shelf you can actually buy it for that price. they will argue it at the register saying that it wasn't supposed to be on the shelf but if you stick to your guns they will be forced to let it go. we have countless things in the overheads that are supposed to be gone but they either get lost or ignored and i've been able to get my hands on some pretty nice stuff because it wasn't cleared out.

Home Depot is the best! I once witnessed a customer return a dead plant to HD and receive a full refund in cash, not a replacement plant. I asked the cashier about it and was told that that was their policy. If a plant purchased at HD dies within one year, bring it in with the receipt and a full refund would be issued. I haven't tested it because I feel bad causing HD to pay for my plant-rearing misfortunes, but I appreciate that they offer such a generous option. It's a great way to build customer loyalty.
Also, we purchased and washer and dryer from HD about eight years ago and I remember getting so many discounts we didn't even ask for. Can't remember all the particulars but we have both HD and Lowe's right outside our neighborhood, and we always go to HD first. We only go to Lowe's when absolutely necessary. That may end soon as I recently heard that Lowe's is playing politics and punishing employees that support a certain candidate. Thanks for the inside info! ~ Lisa
