I remember this happening. I worked at an outdoors store behind the gun counter for a while and 7mm STW ammo sold like hotcakes.....then, it just stopped. 7mm Rem Mag far and away outsold 7mm STW and 7mm RUM. Where I live, 7mm Wby mag never really took off. 300Wby was always popular..to the point we couldn't keep the ammo in stock. Many of people who bought 300Wby and the 7mms were hunting over very large soybean fields and hunting monster steroid beast whitetails. They wanted the extra oomph of the magnums to push a larger projectile at higher velocities. Great video!! Thank you!
I owned a 7mm STW, built by Darrel Holland on a Model 70 action with a 26" Pac-Nor barrel. I settled on a load consisting of the Barnes 150 grain XBT and enough RL22 to get it to 3300 fps. I used it for open country elk hunting and it worked very well for that, I took my best Rocky Mountain elk with it. However, it was a heavy beast and when a buddy fell in love with it I sold it to him with little regret.
The STW has always been one of my favorite cartridges. I remember back as a kid when my dad got one in a Sendero, and seeing the groups he shot with it, I was hooked. I'm currently shooting one in a Model 70 Laredo, well, when I can find powder that is...
Yes sir … I also love the STW … i’m one of those guys that knecked down 8mm to get my STW brass back before it was offered via factory .. The Winchester Md 70 laredo with its boss break is one of my favorite STW’s .. mine was originally a 7mm rem mag , but i had it rechambered for the 7mm STW .. 👍🏽👍🏽
I remember it was released at the same time as the 260 Rem and was getting a lot of press. The 260 is still hanging on but the 7mm STW is gone now, never would have thought that at the time.
It was an interesting cartridge when it was first introduced. Since then however, many other .28 caliber cartridges have left it in the 7828 dust. Including my favorite 7mm, the 28 Nosler.
When ammo manufacturers started producing 7mm STW due to customer demand, they found the wildcat loading data way over pressure. Once it was dropped to 65K the performance wasn't there like the original claims.
Having owned 3 7 STWs it is a good cartridge . My Ruger NO 1 with a 29 in Lilga barrel get 3500 fps with a 140gr bullet and RL 22 powder and a FED 215 primer ( will list the load if you ask ) . With heaver bullets ( 160 - 175 ) you should use H 870 , H 5010 , WC 860 or WC 872 ( surplus 50 cal powder ) or equivalent burning rate powders. With those powders you can get 3300 with 160-165 gr bullets and 3100 with 175 gr bullets . The only drawback is you have to use a full length magnum action but for a hunting rifle who cares .
Im in the process of building a 7 stw as we speak..... Some time ago I found 500 pieces of brand new rem 7 stw brass in a gunshop that had been sitting on the shelf since -99 for next to nothing. Just because I like oddball cartridges, there is a fast twist .257 stw, 6.5 stw, 8 rem mag and a .416 rem mag switch barrel halfway complete now on my rem 700 sendero. Oh, and the original 7 rum barrel is still in use also.....
I own stw ,I use 140 g. And have no problem with this round, and yes the rounds are had to find, out there in the field, but I really enjoy the gun,I finally found a set of dies, so they are not going to stop me from putting it away because I can't find ammo anymore.
Thank you! your videos are great, please keep doing them. It's very interesting to learn about cartridge history and historical comparison with the contemporary and modern cartridges.
The sendero with factory muzzle break , leupold 6.5x20 scope And a calvin elite timney trigger , was my rifle of choice growing up , I harvested dozens of muledeer and coues with that rifle, my furthest shot was 867yrds … I later retired it for the 6.5x284 norma , but I’ll never sell my STW’s , there’s just a certain swag about that cool cartridge.. 👍🏽👍🏽
I haven’t got back to the range with my STW. I shot all my buddies reloads which were loaded light. I can’t wait to see what velocities I can get near max charge!
Burger bullets made a documentary with deer being shot with 7 mm shooting time Westerner the deer shot by shooting times Westerner drop like they got hit by a lightning bolt
It still is a very good cartridge no matter what any one says, I know because I had one custom made, I didn’t pick a book up and say it’s 15 minutes is over, Why would you put it down?
I have custom built rifles in 7mm rum 28 nosler and 7mm stw i get 3150 easily with 175 grain bullets and honestly my 28 nosler and 7mm stw both shoot the exact same powder charge the 28 nosler is no faster in my rifles and both have exact same hart match barrels at 26 inchs and both are throated lond so i can get most out of both cartridges but if i had to choose id choose the 7mm stw its jist as fast and i can form the brass from many different cases unlike the 28 nosler
@Reloading Weatherby yes its very simple cartridges get velocity from expanding gasses if u ignite 70 grains of powder and 80 as long has u have long enough barrel the bigger cartridge will always win i have 50 custom built rifles in almost every magnum hunting cartridge because i like to see for my self i even have a custom built 8mm rem mag also that i get 3100 fps with a 220 grain bullet but thats another topic
@Reloading Weatherby for speed i shoot my 7mm rum it wears a 28 inch barrel an i get 3450 fps with a 160 accubond im not gonna lie my 28 nosler shoots a 180 berger going 3150 and its a light rifle and very accuarte easy to walk with i shot my mule deer this year in idaho with it but i like my 7mn stw better
I believe before being legitimized it struggled with the 7mm practical aka 300 win mag necked to 7mm. Then enjoyed a short time in the sun only to be over shadowed by the rum. The whole time it had to compete with the most popular magnum ever.
During the late 1960s - early 1970s, some 1000 yard competitors used a wildcat 7 mm - 300 Weatherby Wright cartridge with considerable success. They probably used H -570N or H870 powder instead of the yet unavailable IMR 7828, which is still a little too fast for such a large 7 mm cartridge. Often, when one believes they have an original idea, it isn't original - just saying . . .
I have a 7mm stw. I'm a left hand shooter so rifle choices are limited. I definitely am finding it hard to get ammo for it. What choices do I have with me current rifle???
@ReloadingWeatherby I can't find anything where I live in ND. Try online at random times and that also is a dead-end. So, I thought about getting what I need to start reloading.
anything that kicks at or above 25 ft/lb is destined to be niche, and it has to compete with EVERYTHING else. if i'm gonna deal with that on the back end.. why not shoot a .300 wsm? 7mm stw is a cool cartridge, i knew a guy who hunted with one for everything. but, it does raise the question. and, since im talking about "for everything," if someone was never going to hunt elk/moose, is the .257 weatherby mag the best deer/sheep round ever made? its the reigning king of the bean fields, but is there a better choice for all cervids less than 500 pounds? 6.5 rpm? .25/06?
what happens is people jump fads ,with is okay, goof balls want short actions and there is a motion that the short action is better,..well i disagree there is nothin wrong with a belted magum or a long action,. you usally only get 1 good shot at what your shootin and if you do get another shot the half inch longer bolt throw is not goin to make a difference''just fad jumpers and a marketing scheme..to each their own, i will stick to the long actions and belted..00i know for a fact where my first shot is goin ,,dont need to rely on the 2nd..for me i love the stw it is without doubt the man...but i am a 7mm fan i have the 7mm08 the 7mm mag and the 7mm stw
Shooting times Western seems like you're dealing with 50 caliber Barrett bullets 7 mm shooting times Westerner are certainly not small their neck down from 8 mm rem mag one of the biggest bullets cases around
Yet another failed cartridge. It was a barrel burner with too much kick and blast. Meanwhile the 6.5 Creedmore took off because it does what hunters need it to do without the unpleasantries of the 7 mm STW.
@@ReloadingWeatherby wrong again, it caught on because it does many things well. 7 mm STW failed because it does many things badly. @@PassivePortfolios "The perfect all around cartridge?" bahaha it's extremely mediocre as a big game cartridge. The 6.5 Creedmoor can't even beat the old 30-06 or 270 Winchester. @@ReloadingWeatherby 600 yards, huh?! No real hunter shoots at game 600 yards away. The 300 Win. Mag. is more powerful that the 30-06 and 270 but is less popular than either.
