Maths Tutorial: Trigonometry SOH CAH TOA (trigonometric ratios)

  • Опубліковано 15 чер 2011
  • SOH CAH TOA is used to remember the trigonometry ratios; sine = opposite over hypotenuse, cosine = adjacent over hypotenuse, tangent = opposite over adjacent. This helps you work out unknown side lengths or unknown angles in a right-angled triangle.
    This video is a tutorial on how to apply this rule.

      Every year, we spend 180 days, 5 days a week, 6-8 hours a day (depending on the school you go to), in chairs, supposedly being educated. Many of our tax dollars (though perhaps not enough when you look at the wages of teachers) go into this supposed education system. If teachers insist on teaching things like algebra and trigonometry, while also insisting that we will use these "skills" after we finish school, then they *should* teach us everything, whether useful or not. 6300 hours of school per year should obviously be enough to learn everything.
      *Continued rant:* Teachers also insist we practice these "application" problems where we would use these formulas in a supposed real life scenario. These include figuring out how much time it would take for a ball with a given mass to reach the ground after being thrown at a certain height with a certain amount of force at a certain angle, or perhaps finding the length of a drop based upon how long an object spends in the air. In real life, guess what? Not only do we not care, we are not going to accurately measure things like the amount of force given to an object or the amount of time it spends in the air. So we spend weeks and months learning about useless formulas that random Greek mathematicians invented for whatever reason. My point is, it's all useless. We don't care, we don't use it, and I'll stand with this view point until someone proves to me that we won't have Google forever.
      Don't even get me started on history. Not only do we spend years learning about the history of America or the failure that Christopher Columbus was, there aren't even supposed "application" problems where ANY of what we learn in history class is is applicable to real life situations. We are always given the mindset that it doesn't matter what happened in the past, only what we create in the present and future, right? Well, then, what's the point of 180 hours of History lessons a year? Sorry, but History Class makes NO sense to me at all.
      Sorry for the rant, I just have the need to express my thoughts on the supposed education system.
      No hate, I just needed to vent some feelings I've been going through.
      PS My school bought 60 touchscreen monitors and new computers for the school library, but somehow they can't afford edible school lunches.

      Lupe743 I partially agree with you I agree with you on the first part but not the part about history I could be biased because I personally enjoy history, the syllabus in oir countrt for history had to be revised be u stil enjoy, you might not realise this but things are repeating the point on.history is to look on the past, study it and try and improve on that so in the future these mistakes won't be repeated, sadly these mistakes are still repeated this because imo many people, like you don't give history enough importance, I get your pont but I personally dont agree with it.

    For those who may be confused how she got 8.18 for Sine, she used her calculator * twice. * First she entered the measure of the theta angle (43) and hit the SIN button, yielding 0.069. Then she multiplied that by 12, which in turn yields 8.183.

    I'm not even going to lie here, this was better explained on this video than it was in class and it's really complex to understand but it was 1) peaceful, no shouting classes or disruptions which was good. 2) Gave me a boost to my GCSE's that are 6 weeks away and this helped so much. Thanks (I'm also failing at English so sorry if this was difficult to understand)

    • @jabbathehut1871
      @jabbathehut1871 Рік тому

      School failed. This video is much better because 1) peaceful, no shouting, no bullies bullying people while the teacher ignores it -- it's what they do most of the time, and people saying otherwise are the bullies trying to keep things under wraps 2) no suspensions for using self-defense after being attacked by a bully, which schools are famous for -- there are no excuses for that kind of behavior, even by pro-prison/school people 3) no school shooting after the bully plays the victim on social media, no victim blaming, no harrassments and see-through backpacks, and then more bullies come back with daddy's pistol to shoot the classmates because they "saw it in a videogame," _cough_ knew they would get away with it if they blamed videogames, because senators really are that senile and stupid, and would rather suspend our happiness and games, than deal with domestic terrorism or inequalities in the Weat _cough_ Roe V. Wade being appealed, racist/sexist anti-mask, anti-abortion, anti-immigrant teachers who are too stupid to teach anything but bigotry 3) videos on UA-cam teaches us more in 8 minutes than 24 tyrranical, liberal authoritorian-traumatic years would teach us in schools.
      There are no excuses for the lack of effectiveness of the global school school in the West. The teachers say that girls get to have phones on (the boy's phones get locked up in a box) and get treated better in class, because life isn't fair, and I should just suck it up. My teachers also say that men are inferior to women, and that all immigrants and those with middle-eastern pedigree are terrorists. There is no excuse for the horrors you get in schools, for the PTSD/war shell-shock that you would expect to see from a Vietnam survivor, the kind of abuse your superiors dish out, far worse than any war -- in war, 100% of all soldiers aren't children being pushed and commanded by adults (regarding the idea that everyone is just a foot soldier in the plans of the tacticians and commanders, applied to School), and the rest of the adults simply being incompotent fools who can't lead a division. And yet, in schools, that's how it goes: if this is how much I can learn in 8 minutes, and looking at the part where I have always been studious and faster than my brain-dead peers -- through all 12 years of school, all of what you cover, if you remove the repititions and mindless scribbling that is 99% of school, it would be compressed to one year, or maybe a month, based on how little you do there.

  • @further_maths
    @further_maths  9 років тому +282

    @that dude It's because you have the brackets in the wrong place. You are asking your calculator to work out the sine of (43x12), as in the sine of 516. Instead, it should be the sine of 43, multiplied by 12. So you are typing sin(43x12). Which is like asking sin(516). Which will give an incorrect answer of 0.40 The correct way to enter it into your calc is sin(43) x 12 which will give you 8.18. Don't worry, this is a really common error. I should definitely have explained that better in the video! Hope that helps :-)

      Ziot what do you mean not to scale ... angles are angles no matter how long the line

    • @ZiotGaming
      @ZiotGaming 7 років тому +1

      Lord_Lammington they could show an angle that says 34° so you can do the excercise, but the angle may actually measure 31°. Its done like this so you can measure the things and so you have to use sohcahtoa

      God damn you are stupid, not ever question you get is to scale. They teach you how to do this since you will not always get the chance to use a protractor.

    to change the mode (on a scientific calculator) you press shift and the mode/setup. I list will show up and in that list there will be deg and gra. Next to them there will be a number press the number next to deg. To check your calculator is on degree mode you have to look at the top of the screen and if the D is there then your in degree

    have an exam tomorrow, and trig is the thing I have struggled on for so long since leaving my last teacher, who practically taught me everything I know (and is the only reason why I passed). I have left it to last minute because of how much I dreaded it. Upon realising my teacher has all my books from the past two years I needed to revise from, I was left with no other choice but to use the website my school maths department recommend. The methods they used were completely different to what I used, and being the only class that used the method you displayed, no one else could help. I have picked this back up, and will have you to thank when I pass the trig side. Thank You!
