My dad was a viola player (he played with Toronto Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s). This was his warm up piece. He played this every day. It sounded so rich on a viola.
It’s quite a different feeling on the viola, certainly! Regardless of medium of playing, it’s really euphoric to play this at full tempo and being able to appreciate the music.
@@dacoconutnut9503I listened to the Tchaikovsky and It was beautiful! Thank you for suggesting It! But why did Bach wrote (or maybe the editor wrote) just a "2" in there? Is there any reason behind that?
Exactly. Some famous violinists like to go at about twice this tempo. I can actually play it at this tempo. I thought I was playing it too slowly but seems I wasn't.
I barely know where to start. The clarity, tone, intonation, tempo and his feel for the piece is so remarkable... And it does not hurt that my very first hearing of Gavotte en rondeau, as with many of my age (56) cohort was from the PBS science series "COSMOS", performed no less by Grumiaux. I was mesmerized and today more than ever I find Grumiaux my favorite violinist from a list of many. I will conclude by saying: I experience a unique feeling listening to this very performance of Gavotte en rondeau. As many of you well know, this recording is pressed onto a gold LP record that is aboard the Voyager spacecraft. It represents a small part of the LPs content; that being the sounds of earth. I find so much calming peace knowing even after I, we, everything turns to dust, this may still be transiting the universe until one day our 'message in a bottle' from a pale blue dot arrives on a distant shore, and the inhabitants weep with happiness with what they have discovered.
I’m playing this on marimba for a college performance. A very well written piece both for listening pleasure and an exercise in dexterity and musical discipline!
Yes. Preach. Y'all ain't special if "I love yoo" brought you here or if you're a "wEIrD aND qUIrKy tEeN" that likes classical more than any other genre.
Michael Gfroerer that's why grumiaux is my favorite solo bach performer. It's clean, rich and lived in. Doesn't feel pretentious on one hand or too goopy on the other
I'm here because of Serge Rachmaninoff's splendid transcription of this for piano, which I always thought was original Bach. Amazing to hear the source material which is, of course, complete in itself. A credit to both masters.
Grumiaux lp set of all 6 (Vinyl 33 rpm) has been a mainstay of home listening for years. H. Hahn probably spent some hours listening to him. Such love and care.
i heard my orchestra teacher practicing this, but i didn’t have time to ask her what the piece was. naturally, i went to twosetviolin and i found my answer. like always
The Grumiax rendition on Bach's Gavotte en Rondeau makes my whole existence to resonate with the universe and evokes a whole new state of mind quite close to rapture and pure bliss~ ♡
From a Twoset episode... Brett: If you were to meet an alien species, what piece would you play for them? Brett: * plays Bach Partita No. 3 * Eddy: So it's confirmed, Brett has alien fetish.
In bar 17 somehow I sometimes start hearing the ''1'' of each bar on the last 16th note. So I checked this out and it makes sense like this of course. But also sound nice when the descending bass note is on the 1. I guess did not expect classical music to have such syncopated accents

Did he played it in E, or in A, because of the difference in the strings tuning?
1:12 that slow deep bounce to the tight vibrato low G sharp was just perfect
12:10 ah yes my favorite time signature, 2
lmaaaooo, how do u even play in that
ohh I think its its the time signature 2
2
It means 2 half notes in a bar :)
A similar (if not the same) is also featured in Tchaikovsky Op.56 Contrastes, second movement

Exactly. Some famous violinists like to go at about twice this tempo. I can actually play it at this tempo. I thought I was playing it too slowly but seems I wasn't.
Its bach so it's really up to you tempo wise (within realm of reason) so this more than acceptable!

The best of the three partitas for violin solo by the gigantic Bach
His violin has the richness and depth of a viola but can go as high as a violin. Absolutely beautiful
I think it it because Grumiaux used to play on a Strad with gut strings, such a lovely sound
