if you pour a bit of resin (polyester) in to the lamp, it makes the botom impermeable and stops leaking

Hi, i was wondering how you made your lamps. Did you use a mould to press the clay in and what type of 'low fire' clay did you use? Thank you!

Hello! I did use a mold and Standard Ceramic 101 buff clay. I posted in my blog about the process here if you’d like to see the details: thornandthread.wordpress.com/2021/06/19/roman-oil-lamps/

What is the process of trimming the wick? Is that done after ever lighting?

You can seal the clay by polymerization. Just let your oil soak into the clay, and then cook in an oven at about 400 degrees or whatever th flash point is for the oil. Its just like seasoning a cast iron.

How long did a clay lamp last in ancient times before it was thrown away.? A week, A month? BTW I LOVE your video!

Hello! So far, I haven’t needed to trim the wick. The end that is charred relights quickly and keeps burning. But I suppose you could use scissors to trim the end of you needed to.
