CAT D7R's Dozing in Antarctica

- I am a part of the Australian Antarctic Program, this is Wilkins Aerodrome where all our flights carrying passengers and cargo arrive in Antarctica from Hobart, we also support medical evacuations. Australia funds an Antarctic program to further understand the climate we live in and how it used to be, breeding populations of Animals here in summer and support meteorology with twice daily balloon releases and forcasting.
Our runway is a blue ice runway built straight on the glacier surface and we use snow blowers to remove snow off the ice surface and then utilise dozers to push the snow berms made by the blowers further away from the runway to avoid more snow buildup and keep our airstrip active.
We use three D7 LGP Dozers to push the Snow the Snow Blowers shift off the runway as far away from the runway as possible by working as a team and slot dozing.
These are the two original dozers around 12 years old and a newer one with 2500 hrs, we also have two brand new Next-Gen D7's arriving on this February's Resupply Voyage.
LGP is abbreviation for Low Ground Pressue, which are the wider than standard tracks on these machines so they dont sink into the snow.
By the looks of it those machines are nice an comfortable on the inside 😊
Why have such loud music?? I'd like to hear the equipment. That is why I'm watching. Bummer.
I agree
I agree 2
Exactly!
I like to ride with the doors open to hear all the clink clacky of the tracks and the nice diesel until my dam boss pulls up yelling shut those dam doors 😂
@@obsgarage6293 lol so what is the newest age range uh? How u say? Group out now days?... I think it's called GEN Z generation.. Right?
This brought back good youth memories of building berms at Willy Field in Mcmurdo back in the 70's. We would have to put the tower, supply hut and other buildings on a berm after the last flight left as part of the winter over crew. They were put on berms so they could be found for the next summer season. We used wide track forked Cat's to load and unload the C130's and 141's.
Technically this is now a snow Cat.
ba dump tiss
That would be a tracked people carrier I believe made by Porshe.

It's a dad joke. 😄
Appreciate the posts!!
I could watch this all day keep it up!
Of all the decades I’ve spent around and running heavy equipment I’ve never seen,
much leas heard of a wide track D7. I honestly never knew they existed, earn something new everyday
That’s one of those government contract specials lol
Wide tracks are an option you can get on most equipment.
@@williambryant5946 never seen them on anything bigger than a 6 until now, I’ve also never really looked either
Really? Among the dozers we used at a coal mine back in the mid-90s was a D7 LGP. Had a D6 LGP as well. D9N & D10N dozers were for the big jobs but the smaller LGP units were for reclamation and on the stockpile used to feed the conveyor for the train load out.
@@elijahrobinson2362 a 7 in itself is a rare commodity around here not to mention a wide track version. I always wondered why they never caught on around here but I knew there was a market for them otherwise Cat wouldn’t keep making them
Thanks for the Videos from Germany
Looks like fun. I like the guy with no boots on LOL.
г. прошлого столетия...)))

Fantastic! I applied for the AAP, wasn't accepted unfortunately but wow, it looks as amazing, enjoy!
Thank you for explaining in the description what you were doing!
I’m diggin getting to kick off the work boots👍👍
Looks like you'll never run out of work
very cool. my friend bought the two original Cat D8s that were modified heavily named MaryAnne n something else. VERY COOL old cats. What a cool gig ya have there skinner
I bet those old Gals could spin a yarn or two if they could talk!
No mud, no dust, no heat, practically no wear on that undercarriage or blade...forget about bumping out that air filter.
You can extend those hours on those oil changes too...I would. Good video thanks.
I was thinking the same and no shoveling mud out of tracks
Can't extend the oil changes because of condensation problems. Water contamination is a serious issue especially if it's really cold. The oil just doesn't get hot enough to evaporate out all the water that condenses in the case when it sits.
26 yr Cat technician, actually, snow is murder on undercarriage components. Rails, rollers, idlers, sprockets, bushings.... the pads and their grousers will last forever though.
@@JM-nt5fm makes me wonder however with the incredibly low humidity in Antarctica if water condensation is still a problem. The only snow and ice that is melting is whatever the engine is keeping warm. it is so cold that any precipitation in atmosphere that does occur is crystalized. Very rarely does it snow, and much what you see gets covered is from wind carrying the ice and snow.
Why aren't the dozers working side by side blade next to Blade that pushed much more snow
Very good video ❤️👍
The D7R is the best sounding dozer
That looks like so much fun
So dope. A once in a lifetime dozer job
I was stationed in Antarctica and did this exact same job. Amongst other things.
@@seabeechief99 did you see the “ice wall” or aliens or signs of ancient structures lol
@@Spawn303 no. I don't believe in aliens. Just ice and snow everywhere. Bone numbing cold. Except inside the equipment.
The ancient structures were left from the 1960s by previous SeaBees stationed before.
@@seabeechief99 haha nice. That’s so cool. It’s funny to hear ppl always say aliens, ancient structures and the ice wall being guarded by the government is down there. Lol flat earthers are crazy. No one I’ve talked to that’s been there sees anything like that
This channel will go viral. I’m subbing
exciting scenery
Great video! Could you do the next one without the music? How many dozers are they running to get the runway operational?
Looks like three
I have a video coming up without music! Mainly of the older dozers with the 3306 motor, the C9 doesn't have much note about it unfortunately!
We run Three dozers but just had two brand new Next Gen D7's arrive so we will have five for a season until the old girls are returned to Australia on the ship this time next year.
Wow that’s a great adventure and job 😅thanks for sharing
@@thommosaussieadventures2654 I agree. The music ruins most internet videos. Give us the real deal playa.
Yeah, the 'music' is loathsome!
I bet those dozers love that cold dense air.
Did they find Yukon Cornelius?
Why do you slot doze? What is the slotting for? Do you end up pushing the ridges too? Or do they stay?
Cool thanks mate
Sweet machines I ran a D9 for a bit. But ran D6's my whole life
Helped making Ice roads in the north, they use D5 in the muskeg wide track cats.. I follow doing snow fills and ice bridges with a GMC 466 water truck with monster tires. Dam good job and fun to.. Live in a camp drive a monster truck at work make real good money 9K to 13.5k a month lol Most of the work was at night run over ground the cats cleared push the frost in by running over it helps when it's 25- or more.. You were paid to drive all over spray water on soft spots. The hardest part of the job is keeping fresh water from turning to ice it is -25 out water in a big metal tank freezes pipes freeze to valves pumps... I did it for many years best job I ever had..
Good video but I'd rather hear it without the music I like to hear the machines. I have a question we're them dozers shipped already put together or did you guys have to put it together in the cold??
The tractor unit comes as one piece, blade and icespikes are then fitted in Antarctica.
That's some funny lookin dirt ;)
That is true slot dozing!!!!
When I 1st jumped in a dozer I had no idea that raising or lowering the blade 1/4" can and would make all the difference in the world.
I am still quite new to dozing and I certainly have been learning that as well, steady hands and slow movements are a must!
Maintaining the perimeter ice wall. Looks pretty flat out there.
The music being so loud gets on my nerves, can hardly hear the dozers over it.
looks like a dream job if u ask me!
Need one of these for my driveway
Классная работа.
Wao 😍👍👍❤️
HOLY SUFFRIN, thats a lot of snow 😂
I think they will be at this snow removal for a while down there
Camarata be like: Ok so we're on this job today we're going to plough Antarctica what do you think about that Cody?
I'd have thought theyd be fitted with Rain Caps to keep snow out during blizzards etc
They probably used the tried and true 5 gal bucket as we did!
I have doubts that those machines are shut off at all with those temperatures
@@n1uk214 They are shut off. Otherwise, they'd suck a ton more diesel than they already do. Can't speak to this crew but where I grew up the lows got down to -40(C&F) and properly shutdown & stored, they could be started days later, not hop in turn the key and go, more like 20min to get them running, but they'd start. Other option was to keep them in a shed. Amazing how an unheated shelter can keep stuff warmer even if the temp inside is the same as outside.
Our machines have a blizzard cap the call it, red steel pipe with a capped end that fits over the end of the exhaust and one for the airbox, quite heavy so it wont blow away or lift like a rain cap might.
Machines are stored outside but we have them plugged into block heaters overnight or we get up early before breakfast and use a portable generator to warm up the block while we eat then go and start the dozer an hour or so later and let it warm up for a while before operation.
I have a video coming of how we get a machine going again after a blizzard.
That's cool. Here in west virginia we've had some remote jobs. Not nearly as remote as you but no electricity and we've built fires in half drums to get them thawed out..
I was down there with NSFA for the 76’, 77 seasons.
OAE
Nice video. I agree with the comments on the music. You are in one of the most desolate places on earth silence speaks volumes.
Great video! What are the small cables going into the engine area while you're fuelling up?
To recharge the batteries
No to power the fuel pump off the dozer
@@baflabies Why do you need to recharge the batteries? The batteries and the booster quick connect are under the cover beside the cab door. Great videos I really enjoy them!!
We use an electric fuel pump on the fuel trailer that uses power from the dozer to operate.
I always wondered how much do they pay operators out there? How long do you have to stay there and do you choose what you operate or do you just operate anything and everything?
On the Australian Antarctic Division website there is a jobs tab with most of that info mate, but an Operator is looking at 69k per annum with a 63k added allowance when in Antarctica.
The options are a full 12months in Antarctica without returning or a Summer of about 4 months long.
Also have to factor in about 3 months of training on top of the Antarctic deployment in Hobart for any aviation related role such as this one.
I left home in Late August 2022, will return home around December 2023.
You are expected to operate everything when required as certain jobs cannot be done at certain times due to temperatures, like it is too hot to drive tyred machines on the ice runway in the middle of summer so we are running dozers day and night shift but when it cools down again we will grade and groom the runway surface.
Jednoznačne Praca Profíkov 👍 CAT 👍👍👍💪💪💪 TOP 👌👑
In the middle of nowhere pushing snow around. That makes a lot of sense.
Thommo, Are the 4 track ag tractors Case -Internationals? Great Videos!!!👍👍👍
that's a nice cold video 🥶🥶🥶
Thanks for the overuse of Techno through the headphones... really added to the experience of watching the video. Next time, make the Techno even louder, like ear bleeding loud, whilst were all watching D-11's.
So how bad is it when it does get stuck?
Dream job.
Una pregunta amigos , dicen que no dejan viajar libremente a la Antártida mi pregunta sería ¿ Que hace esas máquinas aya trabajando?
Atleast the engine won’t get I assume ? And the dozers will stay nice and clean 🙌🤙
What a dream job….
Is the snow and ice hard on the track gear
Wild
In windy areas without trees, you make your runway 3ft higher than surroundings and magic! No bulls, no diesel, no nothing except light cleanup and FOD patrol.
Greta would be mad if she saw this!
Those must be some warm 🧦
What company is this for and or how would I get in contact
It's the music for me
I wanna be that Dozer.

Nice video! Be careful with the radio playing in the background where you haven’t added music though, UA-cam have given me copyright strikes for that in the past. If you can make out the song clear enough they will either give you the option to hide it under another audio track or they may remove the video (in extreme cases).
Cool stuff though, I’ve always wanted to work down in Antarctica.
Negative 150 degrees. I was there. Seabees in mcmurdo station.
@@seabeechief99 we travelled through McMurdo on our way to our Australian Station this year, she's one big operation down at McMurdo for sure!
It looks like a tough job
Can you elaborate more on what is slot dozing, and why do you do it.
Slot dozing is a method used to carry more material. Keep running the same slot over and over keeping the walls high helps from dribble (material) coming out the side therefor holding the material being pushed in front of the blade instead of spewing out the sides.
That looks awesome. How do you find a job like that?
Not easy. Security clearance required. AECOM is a great start
the security clearance is so that you won't tell the normies about the ice walls and the warrior penguins guarding it
To get a job at McMurdo station you can go through a company like Amentum who contracts there or if you're an Australian citizen you can apply for a job through the Australian Antarctic Division.
Hmmm would snowcats be more productive and be able to be used for transport also?
Do you get 24hr days down there and southern lights?
Rs were a great model
What does the D7 bring to the table that a normal Snowcat can't provide?
MOOOORRREEEE PPOOOOOWWWWEEEERRRRR
may i ask why? for find soil ground?
I'm a software developer, but I genuinely want this job.
I see their using one of the best dozers cat ever built no junk d7 e with Regen and Def
Got two with 3306's and one C9.
No Emissions controls on any machines down here, causes too many problems with the cold and reliability with how remote we are.
I would think some giant snow blowers would be more effeciant than pushing snow?
Well I would guess that the actual ground is at least a few hundred feet below them so pushing and packing is more effective.
You can only push and pack it so far than there's no place to put it 9nce it's compacted.
Cool music The Burning of all this Diesel fuel to push snow can you explain ?
Bit more info could be nice. What Runway? Is this for the scientific expeditions down there and then what company does this sort of work? Seems like an amazing job to work in such a remote area. I'm currently trying to enter my local operating engineers union but have no experience so trying to find something to get my foot in the door. Obviously not this work, but something.
This is government work for the Australian Antarctic Division, we are supporting climate reseach in the polar region, the location is Wilkins Aerodrome which is 70kms from Casey Station. 4500km south of perth Australia.
@@thommosaussieadventures2654 Thank you so much for the reply! Awesome info.
People complaining about the music 😂😂😂 come on. At least it's a worthy video.
What are you dozing for? Runway??
Yes, Runway is operational but this is all the snow that came off the runway surface by Snow Blower, needs to be pushed away so the bund / stockpile meets legal height requirements being so close to a runway.
@@thommosaussieadventures2654 legal height requirement? What government dictates this? No answer needed.
What do you suppose they’re looking for?
I could imagine if you get lost and try to turn around get stuck
This is awesome! Do you have an IG?
so what are they clearing, are they just pushing snow for fun?
What kind of additives do they use to stop the diesel gelling up?
Anti-gel additives.
They piss in the tank.
My question is why. Don’t get me wrong I love running a dozer but why snow in the middle of nowhere.
It’s for the airstrip, they are removing snow from the runway and then compacting the berm snow mounds on the side for safety.
What is the remote for which you have next to your right arm?
Front blade joystick ... the left is bulldozer movement joystick...
@@florianvalois4548 tiny remote with buttons next to right joystick.
Just the stereo, aftermarket one has been fitted so operators can use bluetooth.
Was there a Komatsu in the mix ?
Did your outfit ever try the D7 Electric drives?
Yes the new version
The only tropical thing in this video is the music
I didin't know there were efforts to plow the entirety of Antarctica.
How do they get the fuel delivered there? I’m guessing they need tankers delivered each week...
Comes on a ship once a year and stored in tanks on base.
They have giant bladders on sleds they tow behind case quad track tractors to resupply the random missions they go on as well. Very cool customized equipment. There are videos that show the logistics of supplying the bases. Very cool to watch.
Bet these things stay super clean like forever. No mud. Just thaw it out and it’s brand new no mud rocks dirt just snow 😂. Mechanics dream lol
This same guy, Thommos Aussie Adventures, has another video called ‘Tractor Chat’ that goes into how they get their Fuel, supplies and other FAQ. And if you’re interested, he has some other informative videos about life at Wilkins.
What is this for?
It looks like you're aimlessly pushing snow..
Did you go behind Ice Wall
They need some of those in buffalo.
Please...like to hear the dozers, not the music!! Otherwise, GREAT video!!
Check out his latest video, all CAT - no music
🔥👍
Mesin besar ini tidak akan panas karena suhu yg dingin 👍👍
I guess I don't understand why they're not using snow blowers instead of dozing making big ridges when they could make it way smoother that the wind doesn't make big drifts, something doesn't quite seem right I guess I'm not seeing the whole picture
This creator has videos of them using the snow blowers for the airstrip itself, the dozers are for the berm. You should check out his other clips!
@@MickyG2551 okay now that you put it in perspective I guess I missed that he God bless you doing a great job, I'm sure you guys done plenty of this
