  • Natural Resources Technology students, staff and faculty travelled to Costa Rica for a highly educational and entertaining voyage. This was Portage College's first international trip through the Global Skills Opportunity program.
We toured the sustainable farm at the Rancho Margot to see how they produce fruits, vegetables, coffee, spices, pork, chicken, and soap. We also saw how they managed both solid and liquid animal waste to produce high-quality fertilizer and biogas, and toured their solar and hydro-power energy generation facilities. Finally, we also had an informative tour of the nearby rainforest, showing us the many native plants and natural features, and got to sample the farm's production for lunch.
At La Gamba, our visit was led by Florian Etl, who discussed the many types of research happening at the station and highlighted his own research studying the pollination ecology of members of aroids and orchids. We were able to study several examples of these amazing pollinators, and see some of them in action. We also got to check out many other unique and interesting plants and animals around the research station. We toured their research lab and sustainable agriculture facilities, and saw the plants they were growing for reforestation work.
Together, we celebrated the research station's anniversary, which included a public fair showcasing native plants and new sustainable agricultural practices.
We would like to thank Global Skills Opportunity, the Government of Canada’s Outbound Student Mobility Pilot Program, for providing funding for this amazing opportunity.
