What Lorraine Broderick just said...the kind of story Agnes Nixon told that opened "All My Children" with characters influenced by the Vietnam war. That is what we are missing in the current shows. We have an opioid epidemic, racism, sexuality, the Corona virus...and all we get are baby switches, the mob, who's the daddy? The shows still have potential if they just told the stories their genre was gifted by its pioneers to tell.
I am crossing my fingers toes and eyes that the rumor is true that all my children might be coming back. If so, and if they bring back the people who were associated with Agnes Nixon who made the show great, I bet you those are the exact type of story lines we'll be seeing.I don't think I've ever wanted a rumor to be true this much Before!!!
I was actually a bit let down by this documentary. Yes, it praised Soaps and their legacy, but my two points of complaint are, 1: not enough Soap actors were featured and 2: it focused too much on how soaps influenced primetime and reality tv, which by the way, I think soap stars and their writers and creators would it have rather focused on the soaps themselves and advocate for why soaps should still be popular. Personally, I think reality TV is crap. And primetime owes everything to daytime and yet in the world of Hollywood, daytime actors are seen as "lesser than" and not as skilled or talented because they're on a daytime drama. These actors deserve so much. I just feel the documentary didn't praise the genre enough.
@@teddygianni1371Kathryn Hays (Ex Kim As The World Turns), said that Reality TV did a number on Soaps. Also keep in mind that alot of Actors got their Start on Soaps in The US. Same in The UK. Actors from Emmerdale, Eastenders, and Coronation Street would later be icons on shows like Happy Valley, Last Tango In Halifax (Shown on PBS), Gentleman Jack, Granchester, and Downton Abbey made their bones on Soaps as well. Erika Slezak would have been perfect as Janine Butcher's American Relative on Eastenders.
I have only watched one soap in my life, Days Of our Lives.....watching since 1980 when I was a young kid with my Mother and Grandmother. Even tho they have both passed on, I still watch Days daily for them so they know whats going on~
Bill Bell was my favorite soap opera writer! He made me love The Young and the Restless. He was not a preachy "topical" issues writer. He incorporated "issues" into the story as an element. He did not use the art of the entertainment to preach at people. I loved All My Children, but Agnes Nixon had a totally different style of writing. She was all about issues, issues, issues. Shout out to Santa Barbara!

UA-cam is a treasure trove of classic daytime. Check out "bandstandmike" & "BlackDahlia1972", for Guiding Light, in particular! They have YEARS of that show, in it's entirety! 😘
This was pretty much The story of ABC soaps. I watched all ABC soaps growing up. It was past through generations like they mentioned. There were so many other soaps though on other channels. I found Days of our lives through youtube. The Sonny/Will story has been amazing and told through almost 10 years. I don't believe shows like the real world or the housewives aren't some what scripted. I think Andy is a questionable character especially. He gave himself his own show and created fame for himself. What really destroyed soaps is money. They just don't make money anymore and that was briefly touched on with the VCR.
Hell, the sex and torrid affairs are half the fun! Watching characters you grow to love, fall in love with eachother and weather storm after storm, is another part of it. Then there's the slaps and catfights 😂
NBC shows might have been funny, but growing up as a granddaughter, niece, and youngest of 3 sisters devoted to ABC soaps, that was our mandatory viewing on breaks from school, starting with Ryan's Hope at 11:00 am and running through the end of Edge of Night at 3:30. As crazy as it is, it's not the famous faces that went on to be something big in the celebrity industry that stuck with me, and I can remember minute details of those fictional lives better than some of our real ones. For instance, I can tell you that Blackie worked at the Bucket of Blood bar, Jenny worked at the "gentleman's club" Foxy's on AMC, Scott blackmailed Heather into getting down at the Creighton (sp?) Hotel on General Hospital, the Port Charles Grille was filled with ferns thanks to that 70s-80s fern bar thing, and the BEST death on any ABC daytime soap EVER was Lily going click-click-BOOM in Sonny's car!!! Also, there was impressive audacity to the villainous undertakings--like the many mob storylines stretching back across time from the time of Sonny back to Luke's entree on the canvas, the Soviets choosing to infiltrate a family of rich doctors and CEOs in a town nowhere near anything remotely connected to military installations and defense targets, and freezing the world just a jumping off point for the elaborate plans that made evil synonymous with Casadine. However, I think the winning phenomenon in the odyssey of oddities they gave us involved all the /rock star occurrences. Rick Springfield was a surgeon/rock star. Ned Quartermaine was a CEO/rock star. Blackie was a street tough/rock star. Frisco was a cop-turned-World Security Bureau agent/rock star (or vice versa, technically). Heck, even the vampire Caleb was a /rock star, because obviously the only thing that can make up from being able to live openly as an uber-cool vampire those anti-vampers like to stake is to invite all sorts of public scrutiny as a secret uber-cool vampire/famously uber-cool rock star!

I wanted every single soap covered in-depth. The reality part ruined it a little bit and Andy Cohen was annoying like it turned into a promotion for Bravo and Real Housewives. The only reality mention that made sense was Pedro from Real World because it correlated with the importance of the Robin & Stone storyline but outside of that, they wasted 30 minutes which could've spotlighted the soaps that weren't mentioned.

It seems very interesting to me that the soap opera's daytime brother, the game show, seems to be thriving, while soaps have essentially died. I think it has to do with simple, light, happy television and that people crave that. I think nowadays, reality has gotten too real for people and they seek escape.
Soaps have come a long way. Soaps started on TV back in Spring 1944 when NYC's then WABD-TV (now WNYW-TV) experimented with popular radio soaps Big Sister and Aunt Jenny's Real Life Stories giving both of them a brief trial run. These Are My Children was credited as being the first daytime TV soap that debuted in 1949, despite it being short-lived. Other soaps, like Guiding Light, As The World Turns, General Hospital, Days Of Our Lives, One Life To Live, All My Children, and The Young & The Restless would go on to enjoy longevity records. Radio... Painted Dreams was credited as the first ever daytime soap, starting on radio in 1930 and ran till 1943. Guiding Light started on radio in 1937, transitioned to TV in 1952, radio version ending in 1956, and ran till 2009. Prior to TV and radio, there was the vaudeville circuit, periodical publications, and soaps evolving during that time. Over the years... Dark Shadows was a cult classic. Capitol was credited for being years ahead of its time. The Bold & The Beautiful having a huge international following. Telenovelas are a big deal in Latin America. Coronation Street is longest-running UK soap. Soaps have also been famous for launching the careers of big names like Meg Ryan, Julianne Moore, Eva Longoria, Eva La Rue, Nathan Fillion, and Christine Boranaki, to name a few. Movie and prime-time TV stars, including Jeanne Cooper, Ruth Warrick, Joan Bennett, Carolyn Jones, God rest their souls, as well as Carol Burnett, and Alley Mills, reinvented themselves by transitioning to soap acting. Broadway actors and actresses have done soaps as well. Soaps have also carved out the niche of addressing socially relevant issues, aside from character/plot development methods.
Since this TV special aired... NBC's long-running soap Days Of Our Lives moved over to Peacock streaming service, and it'll be interesting to see whether soaps transitioning to streaming service, like Peacock, Paramount+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu could give daytime soaps a new lease on life. Reviving canceled soaps may be very slim, as in there being little to no chance of it happening, unless it can be done successfully, and it be done right. I could also see the streaming services exploring acquiring reruns of canceled soaps, and having surviving episodes digitally remastered for future generations to enjoy. Perhaps Peacock airing reruns of Sunset Beach and Passions, as well as them acquiring reruns of additional former NBC soaps like Santa Barbara (or if Peacock/NBC-Universal could acquire ownership of it), and maybe even The Doctors (soap that ran 1963-1982, and not the recent talk show of the same name) and Generations for soap fans who wish to see episodes again. Perhaps Paramount+ exploring acquiring reruns of former CBS soaps Capitol, The Secret Storm, and Love Of Life. I would anticipate The Young & The Restless and The Bold & The Beautiful making the leap to Paramount+ at some point as well. Maybe Hulu wishing to stream current and former ABC soaps, like General Hospital, One Life To Live, All My Children, Loving/The City, Ryan's Hope, and Dark Shadows. I could also see Peacock and Paramount+ looking into acquiring reruns (or maybe acquiring ownership) of Procter & Gamble soaps, like As The World Turns, Guiding Light, Another World, and the AW spin-offs Somerset and Texas, as well as The Edge Of Night, and Search For Tomorrow. It's a thought. Only time will tell if this becomes reality.
I really wanted to see what it was like writing a soap opera. This show just kind of flaunts the idea of how “amazing” and impactful soap operas were. I also wish there were more people who argued against the format, and what we could get out of the documentary should be left up to interpretation.
GLORIA MONTY HAD WORK ETHIC.. I THINK LAZINESS IS A BIG PROBLEM TODAY IN SHOWS... ESPECIALLY DAYTIME DRAMA... PUT IN THE WORK...MAKE YOUR SHOWS THE BEST... THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX... THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD GIVE US REPETITIVE STORY AND WE WOULD ALWAYS EAT IT UP... BUT TODAY'S AUDIENCE IS SO MUCH SMARTER AND YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE SO MANY INTERESTS... WORK HARDER EXECS.... WRITERS, AND ACTORS.... PERIOD POOH...

I actually think quite the opposite. As I just posted in another thread, I've been hearing rumors for awhile about all my children coming back.I was too scared to believe them because I've missed that show every single day since those fools canceled it.But when Jacob young recently said it in an online interview, I'm now daring to hope the rumors are true. And I hope the show Was to remind people how good the soaps were so they'll Tunein. I certainly will!!!!
The biggest problems with soap is the style. It’s a mass-produced, cheaply-made money machine that yes touches on important social issues, yes is beloved the world around, but it’s a five-episodes-per-week push-‘em-out style of showmaking that demands corner-cutting, over-the-top storylines and acting to match, and a general feeling of cheapness.
I miss another world soooi much but in retrosoect im glad it ended in 99 because it ended when soaos were still goid id hate to see what it would loik like today. Shirt dicey empty scenes...shallow character development...the only pisitive thing i can say about soaos tiday is that thier visually stunning!!!! But thats also its problem beautiful to loik at but no heart any more
Soaps could come back!! Heres simple things that need ti be done...a full theme song and a full clising credit crawl ..we identified with our show and was actually proud when we heard our shows theme!!...networks must show more promos yes it will cist miney but if u build it they will come!!!...make the scenes longer then 30 seconds you cant invest when the scene is shorter then a commercial.do slice of life scenes you know like a mother and daughter bonding...and altho yes u need longer scenes i think you should cut from 60 mins to 30 people dont have time fir 6o mins 5 days a week!!! ...just a few ideas what do u have to lose execs?? Ni ine watching now anyway try something crazy like di it like when you kno they were crazy popular yes times have changed but not that much!!

I also wish there were more people who argued against the format, and what we could get out of the documentary should be left up to interpretation.
because the first radio soap came out called Painted Dreams
The woman at 58:59 is pesonification of class whether she thought he was guilty or not she didnt treat it like a contest!! Classy lady!!!
Yes GH has gotten to be a “cat and mouse show” between the mobs. I wish that would stop!
Its also about $$ the money is in streaming. The networks don't hold all the power anymore.
Lastly I think...what happened to BILL BELL 😒😒
He passed away many years ago.
Wow I can't believe they didn't mention Judith Light's KAREN WOLEK on OLTL... Her trial scene is just one of the most memorable and amazing scenes ever... I didn't like this documentary
1:23:05 does anyone know who this woman is? The documentary made me cry because I never got the chance to experience what everyone else felt in these soap operas.😭
Same with me. I only been watching soap opreas since 2010 but that was when I was 5 when I would watch general hospital with my granny
That's Grandma Kate Martin from "All My Children"
@@DeepScreenAnalysis Thanks you

they don't even mention PASSIONS!!!!!
Or loving.
Or Santa Barbara and Capitol
@@michaelguerrieri3486
Loving was mentioned because the dad from Malcolm in the middle was on the show.
Google the cast and it might surprise you.

WHERE'S TONY GEARY? LOVE GENIE FRANCIS... :D
I'm still looking forward to the anniversary and hoping there is a slim chance he will make a cameo. Have to see luke and laura together ❤️ again.
I would love to know what that song was at the very end of the show.
Emeli Sandé - Sparrow
I think they are getting us prepared for cancellations
I actually think quite the opposite. As I just posted in another thread, I've been hearing rumors for awhile about all my children coming back.I was too scared to believe them because I've missed that show every single day since those fools canceled it.But when Jacob young recently said it in an online interview, I'm now daring to hope the rumors are true. And I hope the show Was to remind people how good the soaps were so they'll Tunein. I certainly will!!!!
@@ellenw391 love
Or maybe they should reboot of Desperate Housewives
@@ellenw391 I would live AMC and OLTL to come back. I'd totally watch
But thats also its problem beautiful to loik at but no heart any more
❤️📺⏳⏰🥰 NOTHING LIKE GROWING UP WATCHING DAYTIME SOAPS‼️ 🧼😍👏👏👏👏👏👏
So true!
Where is arguably the most popular heroine ever: Marlena on Days?
I love soaps... but I don't watch reality tv at all. #sorrynotsorry
Yay Knotts landing.
Ni ine watching now anyway try something crazy like di it like when you kno they were crazy popular yes times have changed but not that much!!
it might have been the first one also

So does this mean daytime is coming back ?
no mention of william j bell who created the soaps the young and the restless and the bold and the beautiful . this is a disgrace ! those shows have been sold with huge success around the world
@Jozar S. They mentioned Irna and Agnes Nixon but definitely should have at least mentioned Bill Bell considering they impact and legacy he left on daytime tv.
I guess they thought Bradley and Nikki were enough for abc. Tbh it was about Erica the whole time.
I agree,give him cred!
I could care less about the OJ Simpson trial as far as I'm concerned it ruin any chance well I hated it because it interrupted my soap opera All My Children One Life to Live General Hospital back in the 80s and 90s that ruined my time with my soap opera so 🖕
IKR.
I remember my grandmother's t.v. stayed on ABC watching Ryan's Hope, The City, AMC , One Life and of course GH.
He didn't just kill Ron Goldman and his wife but he killed any chance we could have watched our daytime soap operas and then this guy basically says the more of a soap opera than a soap opera now people want and I also agree with this and you see hell no reality TV no hell no I want to go away from those kind of things that's why I watch my soap operas to get away from minutes to get away from me some of that I would even car jump TV more like reality TV meets Mad TV give us back our daytime TV give us back all my children and One Life to Live and General Hospital and f*** the news bad enough we have covid-19 now and that's another thing that's killing our soap the only one left
@@ruthalber6169 theres three more
My Days of our lives as well.

When Marana was possessed and when she was the Salem stalker.
That was good stuff.
I enjoyed the retrospective but it made it sound like the pure soap opera genre is a thing of the past...
First off OJ was not a soap opera - it was a tragedy. Interesting characters ?!?!
And there were 2 victims. Not just 1
No no no no no a thousand times no it is not love when you were raped someone that is power and control not love not intimacy rate is a violent act on a woman's body what the f--- people

Berkeley Farmers I am not into reality TV shows second there is nothing like soap operas stop is disrespecting soap operas OJ Simpson shouldn't even be in the same category as a soap opera so don't even go there watch yourself people
It was about the disruption.

I honestly don't see how man can't let men could easily love them too if they wanted to not just women that kind of comes off sexes it's the year 2020 and mannequin life them almost as much as we do
I’m really irked by this show..so they mention then Luke and Laura rape but if I’m not wrong the Roger and Holly rape took place first 😒😒!!! #GuidingLight
right!
I believe you are correct, but the Luke/Laura storyline to wedding was bigger than anything. It was everywhere.
Also Ej and Sami days of our lives
Wow, I didn't think this would stink but it did.👎
And I want to make this clear...CBS soaps are superior to the ABC soap
ATWT and Y&R for life!!!
Uh, no.
