It's impossible to overstate how important The Smiths were to their fans at the time. And it's ok that some don't like them - that's how it was back then. On several occasions me and my friends got chased out of clubs for dancing like Morrissey! I remember how struck I was by this album when it came out. Hatful of Hollow (I know it's not classed as a proper Smiths album, but it was for me) really changed how I listened and appreciated music as a teenager. And then I heard this first track and 'wow' - I wore down the beginning of the cassette (remember those?) playing it over and over again. Thanks for a great reaction.
Morrissey is a very committed vegetarian. This song always reminds me of the film 'Kes' by Ken Loach, an old film from the 1960's and the games scene where the games master bullies Casper. Manchester schools games lessons were like that and Morrissey was bullied apparently in just that sort of situation. Regarding Marr's guitar, check out his guest spot at the end of The Killers set at Glastonbury in 2019, worth a watch for sure.
Great choice again lads. My all time favourite Smiths' song. Pure showboating from all 4 Smiths in the performance. Musically fantastic, lyrically on the nail. Absolutely everyone who went to secondary school in Britain or Ireland in the 70s and 80s could give you examples of teachers who were utter bastards. And given free reign by those in charge to add to the misery. You don't need to delve too deep into the internet to find Morrissey championing vegetarianism and animal rights. Another Smiths' song for you to react to is Barbarism Begins at Home.
Definitely a scathing indictment of Manchester schools but could also apply to all schools across Britain. Lots of us folk will relate to these lyrics.....! Morrisey's words are so razor sharp. Great that you gave a shout out to Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce too
As a Smiths fan I appreciate that Morrissey’s voice isn’t for everyone but respect to you Chris for still picking a Smiths song to react to. I’d love you guys to react to my favourite Smiths song, also from this album “Well I Wonder’ Morrissey’s vocals are really beautiful on this. If that doesn’t convert Chris then all hope it lost 😅
When Chris says he struggles to get past Morrissey's voice I can't help but reflect on how your joint exploration of the Manchester music scene will eventually lead you to The Fall and the dulcet tones of Mark E, Smith. As a slight chance of pace I'll suggest Slow Train to Dawn by The The (a group Marr later joined)
Infected and Mind Bomb by The The are truly great albums. Poetry as well, "Too much energy to switch off my mind, but not enough to get myself organised"
Meat Is Murder was the first Smiths album I bought because it had How soon is now on it, and i was hooked on the Smiths from there on. My Favorite band in high school. Headmaster Ritual is my favorite Smiths song.
If you want to hear a different side to Morrissey's voice, I suggest you listen to 'All You Need Is Me' or 'I'm Ok By Myself' from his 9th studio solo album Years of Refusal from 2009! Great reaction by the way guys, loving your content!
Johnny marr is one of the greatest guitarists of all time its not even a debate i get everyone has preferences but everybody who plays guitar knows marr is the man
Great reaction as always. You should try out The The of which Johnny Marr joined for a few years after he left the Smiths. This is The Day and Uncertain Smile from the album Soul Mining are two of their best and most well known songs, definitely worth a listen!
Yeah but that's recent for sure. When Morrissey went to school in the 70s kids were bullied and hit by teachers all the time. It was the English way I guess.
Love the reaction as usual. How many songs have such long intro the this these days? Such a throwback. plus the da, da, da, day bit I think is just Morrissey ad libbing over the music. Just my take.
Brilliant podcast great reactions Be a reaction to new bands fighting through lock down and trying to get a foot on a ladder to getting a step further to getting heard. THE STRANDS Song MADE OF ART a young band self produced fi the northeast of England. Please have a listen on Spotify and make this a part of yer podcast would be braw. Aw best Mac.
Yes the guitar is amazing but how the hell can you not rate Morrissey's vocals and lyrics?! They are absolutely brilliant and complement the song beautifully.

What I like about these two gentlemen is that they are not sucking up to the fans like in so many other reaction videos.
Thanks!
Another great reaction guys. I’d be interested in seeing your reaction to the Radiohead cover of this song!
andy rourke... my favorite bassist
Everyone who went to English schools in the 70s and 80s understand this song 🤣😂✌️
Great tune great job

'change of pace'
Infected and Mind Bomb by The The are truly great albums. Poetry as well, "Too much energy to switch off my mind, but not enough to get myself organised"
Oh yes, absolutely agree - Chris & Greg should give The Fall a bit of an airing. Would love a bit of Totally Wired right now
@@ekadow But where do.you start with The Fall, so much choice.
I'd also like to hear them react to A Certain Ratio or even ludus if they can find any.

Yo brother Meat is Murder was the 3rd album. Hatful of Hollow was the 2nd bro. Great reaction
Yeah, but maybe he meant the 2nd studio album which would make him correct.
I hated every minute of school in Madrid in the 70s 80s… Morrissey has put voice and lyrics to that pain … !!

Great song! Great reaction! Would love to see you try Well I Wonder, off the same album
Drink every time Greg say, “you know”.
I went to a Manchester school. rough as fuck...the pupils used to batter the teachers!
😯

@@duhusker4383 Yeah...i got a few hits from teachers. Proper bullies back then.
Belle And Sebastian - The Boy With The Arab Strap. Nuff said.
