What a belter To The Shores Of Lake Placid was. It sort-of got reissued as Zoo Uncaged (or something like that), but both were always very hard to find. Saying that, I got my copy of Lake Placid from Millett's in Worcester (!).
One of the greatest undiscovered songs of all time, remember first hearing it in 1980 down in little old New Zealand.Everything about it is perfect, especially those horns and drums.Easily could have been on any James Bond movie - perfect.
My icy hands froze long ago The starry skies are lost in snow And I'm waiting But twelve o'clock has come and gone The Berlin train leaves at one Have I missed you? The moon casts shadows on the plans we made Your note spells danger and I'm afraid What will I do? The Red Square winds are blowing Snow drifts from my feet And there's no way out of Russia When the Iron Curtain's (?) near The Kremlin walls are laughing And only I can see There's no way out of Russia For the lonely spy and me I remember when you told me your secrets Have they discovered, are you caught in there Where are you? The cold wind breathes a chilling breath A double agent could freeze to death Oh, have you? A whistle blows, a spotlight shines Your silhouette with the guards behind They've caught you You try to run, I cry with fear A single shot, now you (?) come here / (?) can't hear I'm running rpt chorus (someone in the comments below wanted to know the lyrics) The more I listen to this song, the more I think it's one of the best pop singles ever written. Absolutely sublime.
It was composed so long time ago and it's so much up to date again... Great song, great video too though the pictures are from before the revolution, nevermind, they reflect the music so well
Lori Lartey was a student at Liverpool Art College. Bill Drummond and Dave Balfe recorded two songs with her - this one, and another fantastic single "Touch", which you can also find here on youtube.
Great video - perfect match of the music and the film. I remember this track off the crimson Zoo album which I once had on vinyl, until I sold all my vinyl. Amazing how it doesn't sound dated and seventies at all. Michael (Liverpool 1980-85)
Just going through a shedload of cassettes - digitising some and dumping others. This was the end of a tape that included The Bunnymen's 'Crocodiles', The Banshees' 'Icons' and The Gang of Four's 'I Love a Man in Uniform' among others. This was the very last track, which I'd completely forgotten about. First thought was it's Pauline Murray and The Invisible Girls, but the internet - and UA-cam - came to my rescue. This was early 80s for sure.
Wow! Still have a 12" of this, great song. Always had the impression that David Balfe was a real piece of work to deal with, though... whatever the case, he did some interesting stuff along the way.
Well chosen visuals. You've don justice to an old hidden classic. 'To The Shores Of Lake Placid' was sort of 'handed down' to me from my brother, and this brings back a few old memories. Nice work.
Thanks for sending it lenonostiftis- i've never heard of them before-this is the third time I've listened to them since waking up this morning! i just favorited it ,too!
If you still haven't found it, 'East Of The Equator' was included on the expanded CD reissue of 'Wilder' (I think it came out around 2000, and I believe it's still available).
gav002: Where did you get that footage of MOCKBA from 1905? That was fascinating. I've been to Moscow 3 times - I was utterly enrapt watching the Kremlin/Red Square scenes.
Hey I love this song and video. I've been trying to find the lyrics to this song and no luck.. anyone know where I can find it? I truly would love to know the words to it!
Wonderful

Excellent track, fell in love with it listening to the shores of lake placid. Brilliant then, brilliant now

iron Curtains Meet.
I think the end is "A single shot, now you can't hear "
The beginning of dream pop... beautiful...
I first listened to this on the shores of lake placid back in 82 if i remember correctly. Still holds up to this very day.
It was composed so long time ago and it's so much up to date again... Great song, great video too though the pictures are from before the revolution, nevermind, they reflect the music so well

I have been looking for this song since the early nineties. This was one of those obscure songs that stuck with me.
Hi, I'm from Moscow suburb. Thanks for the excellent video and music. It's a pity many churches have not survived to our days.
Great video - perfect match of the music and the film. I remember this track off the crimson Zoo album which I once had on vinyl, until I sold all my vinyl. Amazing how it doesn't sound dated and seventies at all.

Thank you for making a video for this song. i've loved L&TC since I heard "Touch" on The Last Stiff Compilation...
I used to have the Zoo Records compilation on CD, I wish I had it back!
WAS REALLY INTO THIS TRACK IN MY ART STUDENT DAYS!....STOCKPORT TECH!
Well chosen visuals. You've don justice to an old hidden classic. 'To The Shores Of Lake Placid' was sort of 'handed down' to me from my brother, and this brings back a few old memories. Nice work.
i'm a late fan of L&C but i'm already jealus of their vinyl-singles you own...cheers

That footage is INCREDIBLE.

Certainly was - I have a John Peel show recording from the radio. Excellent stuff!
If you still haven't found it, 'East Of The Equator' was included on the expanded CD reissue of 'Wilder' (I think it came out around 2000, and I believe it's still available).
@suggs59 Great album. Searching through youtube for other tracks but can't find my favourite - "Burst Balloons". Great era for music tho.
Nice one. Like it a lot. Great tune, great footage.
I love this song. The ending sounds like vintager(1986) Shriekback!
I really love this song - I have an album of To the Shores of Lake Placid ...
Knew Lori and sister Sue we were all art students at the Liverpool Poly ...
i was just gifted L&C 's 2 singles. Peru is great (hadn't listened to it again) as well as Love On The Ganges (thx gav002)
Hello dear friend! sent off also to you lemonostiffis this song?! It is really splendid! ^_^
Was good then-still good now, quality proof!
Sounds like the precursor to Black Box Recorder! wow
gav002:

Where can I find the B-side of this titled “Perú”
I dig it. Very good job, friend.
Am i right in thinking there was a single called "touch"?
I thought I was the only one who knew this song! ... I've got it on the B side of the 'Touch' single. Always thought this was the better track.
Superb stuff but who was Lori.? was it Jayne Casey ?
No, Lori Larty was a fab-looking teenage fashion student from Liverpool Art School who had never sung before this.
@@DavidBalfe Thanks , i bought that record from probe back in 1980, also Touch was another classicc
If you like this, check out Rory Gallagher's "Philby." Heavier sound, but much the same subject matter.
Never heard this in 1982 but video has Cold War theme. It sounds more the British alternative of the early and mid 1990s.
Yes, it's really great, picinela!
touch was released on the zoo label in 1979 ahh those tokyo lights
Congratulations! Nice work. Thanks to lemonostiftis!
Great song! Is this The Chameleons from Mark Burgess or another band with the same name?
No, it's not Mark Burgess - this song was written and produced by Bill Drummond, later of KLF
Ladytron, sounds like this now!
Great!
Hey I love this song and video. I've been trying to find the lyrics to this song and no luck.. anyone know where I can find it? I truly would love to know the words to it!

Ever feel like a lonely spy, Bex?
