Thank you, Todd! I just cleaned (just the oil wells) and re-lubed a clock my wife picked up for $50 at an estate sale. Thanks to your videos here, I was able to fix the chime ringing function, check for how "tight" the movement still is, and make sure I had everything in the right place when I put it all back in the case. Our clock is a 1973 "Colonial" brand, but it looks almost exactly like this one, with the exception of the hammers for the chimes have a strip of leather instead of a pad on the strikers and the method to engage/disengage the chime function is a string instead of a lever. Next thing is to follow your video to fix the beat and regulation, which are still way off, but the clock is running on its own now for a couple days. Thanks Again!!!
The little snail is called the gathering pallet. The spur is the lifting star, and gears in the clock are known as wheels, small gears on the wheels are pinions. And yeah timing is everything. I was searching UA-cam for the chime correct setup for an Urgos movement when I happened on your video.
Here's a question. We have a grandmother clock with a Hermle 451-453H movement. The hour gongs follow the Westminster chimes far too closely. So, at the top of the hour, the Westminster chimes barely have time to finish before the hour gongs have already started. The movement is new and was professionally installed. Is there an adjustment for this? Thank you.
I have a GF clock that I turned the minute hand counter clockwise and I heard something break. My chimes and the time dong does not work now. How big of a problem is it to fix that. Obviously I know nothing about GF clocks. Thanks for your help if you can !
I have a Howard Miller model 610-698. I can't seem to figure out why it only chimes once at the top of the hour no matter what time it is. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I have a Ts McGregor of Ayton grandfather clock made around 1830. Recently the minute hand wont go uphill. It hangs every hour at the 9 and won't travel up hill. Do you have any advice for me please?
There is a little round normally black nut holding the minute hand. Most time the minute hand has a square shaft so it can't rotate with respect to the shaft but it is possible a circular hole and shaft exist as a mod and you have to tighten the round minute hand nut. If it is a normal square shafted minute had there will be a square nut pressed into the minute hand kind of like a rivet that can turn under heavy torque. Maybe that embedded square nut is too loose, it should be quite tight but is movable under heave torque to make fine adjustments to where the minute hand is pointing. If that is the case you can order a new minute hand from Time Savers "timesavers.com" or make sure it is pointing at # 12 during an hourly chime, then take the minute hand off carefully and put a drop of crazy glue on the square embedded nut so it can't spin, or tap the rivet flange around the square nut to tighten up the embedded square nut in the minute hand.
Thanks for the fix on the melody roller adjustment. Our 1920's Winterhalder 5 tube was always one note late on starting. Thanks to you its now PERFECT! You are a great teacher. (Too bad HGH Kashogghi can't afford such a beautiful clock.)
Todd, perhaps you can help answer this. I picked up a Colonial Molyneux from a thrift shop, I’m thinking it’s late 50’s. After watching you vids I figured out how to adjust the crutch, I think it’s balanced correctly by the fact that it will run with out the pendulum for several minutes or better. The problem is when I put the pendulum back on, it will only run for five minutes at best. Could this still be a timing issue with the crutch adjustment, or is it possible I have a pendulum that is too heavy? There was another grandfather clock near this one, both had the weights and pendulums not mounted, but clearly next to each clock. So assuming the weights and pendulum which was near the one I purchased belonged to this one. Thank you for taking the time for making such well put together videos. Edit: I looked at markings it is a Jauch PL 78 CM, if I understand this correctly, the pendulum should be 78 cm long. The pendulum that I have is 84.5 cm long from the hook to the bottom of the bob.
Seem you do have the wrong pendulum. However it shouldn't stop I would think. You might have the crutch wrong or it could be worn out. If it has bad pivots or bushings or is dirty it will stop. If you think its worth the cost it would be best to take it to a local horologist in your area for servers.
I set my grandfather clock to chime the Westminster chime. To my ear it seems to chime too fast. I have timed how long it takes to strike the 16 notes prior to it striking the hour and it take 11 seconds to run through the 16 notes. Is there a set time for how long it should take?
Well listen to this audio link of Westminster chime (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westminster_Quarters) and if yours is much faster maybe your quarter hour butterfly governor (right most gear train above right most weight) is sticking. It's job is to "paddle" the air and to swing out the butterfly wings "paddles" to govern the speed of the gear train speed so the melody plays at just the correct rate. You might need to clean the pivots real good or clean the governor paddles. I have a full set of videos on clock server in my play list that might help but if not or you're not up to the task then call a local horologist in your area to have the clock cleaned, serviced or mechanism replaced. ua-cam.com/play/PL40clH-yZ7flbW79e7sXZ8Ws9sJbA5zFj.html
Sounds simple when explained. Then I look inside my Grandfather clock and everything I thought made sense went right out the other side. And a great big What the...moment 😲😩🤔
Hi I have a clock. It is striking on the hour and every quarter. Example at 12 it strikes 12 times and then on the every quarter it strikes every 12 times and so on. Can you help please
Sounds like the "grandfather clock hourly chime warning lever" is stuck up, but then it would only chime the current hour number not 12 so maybe quite a bit more wrong. Might need a good cleaning and oiling. Pivots or bushing could be warn out which would require professional servers by a horologist.
I recently pulled my chimes to reset them and i pulled the left one a little too hard and it jammed. My boyfriend got in their to unjam it and now that particular chime wont fall with the other ones. Actually it wont move at all. Any ideas why?? Please help!!! It chimes just fine tho and the chain is on the gear.
Most likely you stretched on of the chain links to badly that it deformed and is now jammed. You'll have to take it apart or call a Horologist to come over and repair it in place.
Thank u. I had it taken apart and i apparently kinked the chain and that kink got stuck in the gear. But its fixed and working great now. Thank u so much. ❤❤
hello, i have a HM triple chime GF clock i received as an heirloom , it is a cable drive and keeps correct time, chimes accurately but strikes erratic or not at all , please help i cannot find anything on this issue
Have it oiled correctly. If it has not been taken apart in cleaned in 30+ years or if it has not been oiled every 2 years then it will need to be cleaned, check for bad pivots and then oil correctly. Look for a local horologist in your area that can perform cleaning and repairs.
why in the world would you demonstrate on a clock with tube chimes that most of us would never own rather than a regular chain or cable driven clock that most of our clocks are. ?

Thanks for sharing! It really does help to know the correct words used in the industry instead of making up my own, as I do too often. HA.
I am still amazed at your teaching ability.. so it would be interesting to know how many pieces you have worked out.. good insight Todd...
Where are you located? Do you work on grandfather clocks still?

Hi I want my clock to only chime hourly instead of the quarter hour. Is this possible? My guts are just like yours. Thanks
Just don’t wind the far right weight. Let it go all the way down and if you don’t wind it you won’t get quarter hour chimes.
@@ToddFun I did that with mine but it dosent chime at all now. I'm trying to get it to chime hourly.
My chiming mantel clock chimes accurately except on the first quarter hour. How can i fix it? 3 minutes after the quarter hour.
How can I get my clock to chime the correct hour for the time?
