- I've challenged 7 composers to demonstrate to us what a music slur is. All works in this video are original (except my brief Beethoven and Tchaikovsky examples). This is a rather long video demonstration, but by the end of this video, you should understand that there is more to the slur than you probably thought!

as a side note, I'm a clarinet player and when I was younger the difference between slurred and not slurred was very clear: If it is not slurred, then you use your tongue to articulate the notes and if it is slurred then you do not use your tongue. I remember being quite confused when encountering my first phrasing-slur, which didn't make sense to me at all and at the time I thought the conductor was very wrong in suggesting that it was a different type of slur - that was when I discovered that not only there are different types of slurs, but that slurs can mean different things to different instruments
Thanks for taking the time to watch. There are a lot of musicians who don't understand how to read or notate music correctly, and that's part of what this channel is about. And while I thought the slur was obvious even to me, after thinking about it I realized there's just more to it. This is why I created this challenge / instructional video about the topic.
And I didn't even mention the dashed slur, but they seem to be quite rare, despite having their own specific meanings!

Small correction, just because you arent slurring on a woodwind, doesnt mean all the notes have a separate breath. You can play a bunch of staccato notes on a woodwind in one breath. The more accurate term is that each note gets a separate attack.

Also the practice, not uncommon in Romantic piano and orchestral scores, of using a second set of slurs to indicate phrasing in addition to those indicating articuation.
