Howdy folks. This is the coolest. I won backstage passes to see the JS at the CU Boulder Events Center, in fall 1982, which is where the backstage and concert footage for this video were filmed. This was the first time I met Kantner, Slick, Freiberg, Chacquico, Sears, et. al. I had forgotten that a film crew was there the night. Surfing around on UA-cam, I found a link to this very snowy, Nov. night at the CU Events Center. I remember it well. At the 12 minute mark, you can see me (with red hair and freshly signed CROWN OF CREATION album) and my friend Eric, from high school, talking to Kantner. I still have that LP and the backstage pass; the LP has been signed 1X by Slick, 1X by Balin, 1X by Jack, 1X by Papa John (yeah, I know), 3X by Jorma, and 3X by Kantner. Grace and Paul signed it for the first time that night. Everyone except Spencer Dryden has signed it. And, you never know what's gonna turn up on UA-cam!!! Thanks for posting this video. Cheers.....MC Malthus.
@@skaterdudeprodutions I would also. I was so smiling just reading his story. How exciting to have been there & then find the footage. I tell my family you can find everything on UA-cam. Glad this theory proved true for you MC Malthus, thanks for the cool story ! 😎
I will say it again, back when the san francisco bay area had a great music scene. While the Jefferson Starship was a little szchopranic musically going from "miracles" "run away" "ride the tiger" to "jane" "stranger" "can't find love" they were a great band. The critics were never too kind to them which i believed inspired on modern times album "f..k you we do what we want" but I saw them live and they put on a great show and they seemed to be having fun doing it. Nuclear furniture was the beginning of the end. While it had a few good songs, they seemed to be running out of steam. But nonetheless I think they were still a good band especially as a straight forward rock band from freedom at point zero to winds of change. Miss those days. 🤘🏻✌🏼
Black Widow best metal song of the entire 1980s or ever. Far better than anything any metal band ever put out but it got zero radio play. It should have been re released in 1987-1988 and got massive radio play when metal ruled.
Have seen about 50 Jefferson Starship shows and the solo's were always from Craig on lead guitar and Pete Sears on bass. When Paul died I wrote a tribute sentence using nine songs from Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship. Here goes. It's No Secret, Today Paul Kantner is no longer Running Around This World, but his spirit is like a High Flyin Bird singing Let Me Fly to the Other Side Of This Life where I can wear the Crown of Creation and see The Light from the Windows of Heaven.
@@rickyward542 very nice Tribute to Paul. Thank you for the info regarding the solos. Since Craig was the youngest one of the group, I see why they had him do the solos, plus he is a good guitar player.
No. he only played rhythm guitar. In fact, when it came time to double solos like on 'Find Your Way Back' etc. Pete Sears would step out from the keyboards and play the parts. IMO, Paul didn't write or contribute to any of the Jefferson Airplane/Starship's best hit songs. He wrote or co-wrote only 10 songs, that you've likely never heard of. Not exactly the driving force of the band, but he was "there". His biggest contribution was being Grace Slick's boyfriend for a short time, and they had a child together. 🤷♂
@user-qi2jj5nh4h growing up in San Francisco since the early seventies with parents that were heavily involved with the music industry I have some knowledge of who these people were and the festivities that they would partake in. And we are talking from first-hand witnessing. Not to mention that anybody that was anybody knows what it was like here, sorry you can't relate.
Pity Jack & Yorma couldn't do an occasional guest spot instead of this Malsteem/Van Halen inspired guitar stuff. It's skillful, but not inspired or inspiring, imo
I only stopped by for Grace Slick!
She made everyone, and everything else cooler than they were without her. 🥰
@@lastnamefirst4035 what are you talking about? Do you even know?
Did you "stop by" just to say no? 🤷
@@jlwilder8436 responding to your comment how Grace made everything cooler. I said no. Perhaps so you might get it I should have said No She Didn't
@@lastnamefirst4035 oh, I got it.
But those that know, know. 💁
@@lastnamefirst4035 Excuse me but yes she did.
@@robertsousa9550 you know u might be right. To me they were all cool w or without one another
I always loved Craig’s work .
Mick was so adorable 😍
I love Grace Slick!
11:31 - Grace Slick is priceless!
Interesting to see them all cool with each other. Miss these days!
Despite them having gone from the amazing and unpredictable Airplane to somewhat generic West Coast by this time, I still have a soft spot for them.
They didn't go from Airplane. Jefferson Starship was a different and new band from Airplane (forming two years after Airplane ended).
Find your way back is an incredible song from a so Called generic band 😅
I have a soft spot for Starship as well.
This opinion is retardid lol
Perfect. Love Jefferson Starship ❤
Yep, before they became just Starship.
great footage i could watch them do this every year they toured
Should have added, thanks so much for putting this up.
This is fucking cool wow I'm so glad I found this

They were at their peak the early 1980s. Even if it was more commercial songs were great

The good old days , cigarettes indoors and not a hi visy vest to be seen.

Black Widow was written by Craig Chaquico, the lead guitarist in the band (music and lyrics) with additional lyrics by Grace Slick.
The should have made a video of Black Widow instead of Out of Control IMHO

Edit: see ya in two years for new content
Just think roughly ten years before Grace was going to slip the president a Mickey
The should have returned to a metal sound like Black Widow for their 1987 album.
That was Craig Chaquico's influence as a songwriter (not just as lead guitarist in the band)
"see, life is like a shit sandwich. the more bread you eat off, the less shit you have to eat. we don't have any bread so we're eating all the shit"
Did Paul K ever do a solo?
A couple of solo albums. Very sci-fi themed. Mickey and Grace were actually featured heavily in one of his solo albums, surprisingly.
@@christinealling272 , that is good. Did he ever do a Guitar solo or has he always been just Rythem Guitar?

Black Widow has a ripping guitar solo!
Lol 😆
It's pretty apparent that being coked up made them think what they were doing was much more impressive than it really was.
First off how do you know they were high? Second, that’s a damn ripping solo he’s playing!
