    I have been searching tirelessly to understand the underpinnings of NVivo. I am extremely thankful for the laymen's use of language and demonstration in this video. Excellent efforts! My only recommendation is to remove the pop-up
    tabs so that we are able to see what you are typing as you type.

    I have almost lost my mind trying to understand Nvivo-- each time I created a file and returned all my work was gone-- I have cried and made myself repeat it -after spending hours/days searching I realized it has a version for Mac and one for windows-both are entirely different-- this presentation helps- I didn't see my dissertation taking place if I could not do this part of the paper-thank you for saving my emotional health and taking the crazy part of my days. One big thank you.

    Super useful tutorial! Thanks a bunch, Dr. Shaw! For removing a child node from a parent node, I've found that instead of right clicking and selecting create as code etc., you can just ctrl + x and then ctrl + v (cut and paste) wherever you want to put the node. Thank you again, this has been a great help!

    This video was a helpful re-orientation to qualitative coding using NVivo. I appreciated it. However, I do wish more attention was given to memoing in NVivo. For even first-level processes such as thematic analysis, it will be important to have guiding notes that contextualize what codes mean as well as the relationship between parent and child nodes. You'll also want to just have personal reflections about the codes that might be helpful for the write-up of the data.

    Dr. Shaw, this is a very helpful presentation, especially because I've never used NVivo. I'm finishing up my dissertation this spring and summer and am now coding. At the 25:10 mark you show your three themes. How did you list them as your Themes? I suppose you typed them in that way, as Codes/Nodes, and everything else became subordinate to them? I hope my question make sense. Thanks

    I was wondering if one could put together subnodes say of symptom in a way that they would suggest a diagnosis.

    • @AlanShawesq
      @AlanShawesq  4 роки тому +1

      Not sure what you mean. Ultimately it will be interpreted you. Let's say you had the following symptoms:
      Excessive thirst and hunger.
      Frequent urination (from urinary tract infections or kidney problems)
      Weight loss or gain.
      Fatigue.
      Irritability.
      Blurred vision.
      Slow-healing wounds.
      Nausea.
      If they were taken from a document of patient data explaining their symptoms, then they could all be placed as a "child" of diabetes (i.e., a subnode). The problem you will have is Blurred vision and Nausea would also be the subnodes of other complications. What you could do is create a list of symptoms in NVivo then give each a code to each associated condition. Now, when you click on that code you would get all the associated symptoms for that condition. This will be a big job!
      Hope that helps.

    I am ending up with way to many Codes for my data. Can you help me with this? I am undertaking a thematic analysis of interviews of football players. My goal is to find patterns between motivation accross different career stages. In essence, the difference in motivation between young, middle-aged, and older football players.

    Hello professor, I have research on well being at work especially the generation of items for the purpose of a scale development. We'll be using interviews and Nvivo to code them. How should we code the data to generate items that could be used as a basis for a quantitative study? We want to compare the items gathered with already existing scales and theory.

    • @AlanShawesq
      @AlanShawesq  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Tumbalam, sorry for the delay in getting back, this Covid thing has been a problem. Anyway, in terms of your question, You should start by choosing a code through an Nvivo method, i.e., make a code that using a word in the transcript. Then you sort and re-code. Finally develop a theme from the re-code. I will try and do a video to explain this in the next few weeks.

    Unlike previous version of NVIVO, there is no Analyze tab where we can find "Identify Theme". Word frequency not really giving the result expected. This version does not look smart enough as you are required to do everything manually. Identify themes should be automatic after autocode.

    Can I not just input a whole word document that consists of responses from several participants in one go?

    • @AlanShawesq
      @AlanShawesq  4 роки тому +3

      Yes you can, I do this if when I embark on a Netnographic piece of research. The problem you may is, when you click on a node (theme) it will show you what was said but it might be difficult to find out who said it. I call all my documents Participant 1, Participant 2 etc.. so when I click on the node I will see it is from Participant 1 (i.e., it refers to the document). In netnography, the threads are shorter and will have the Username (or handle) which I highlight so I can see who said what.
      Does that make sense?
