Those 'fuel' tanks are actually called, drop tanks, cuz like they add extra fuel storage and the pilot can get rid of it when he's used the extra fuel, getting rid of unwanted weight and drag.

What fell off the jet fighter was a fuel pod. Fuel pods are used when a mission require extended operations to and from base or carrier.
the drop tank the hornet lost was for extended range. It has onboard fuel tanks too.
