Glad to see you finally come around on the MacStudio! It’s the best computer for the $$$ that Apple has built in decades. Bar none! I remember you had some hesitation about it because another UA-camr didn’t like it. The young guy that did some videos on your channel. I’ve only had great experiences with mine. Still using it with an OWC Thunderbolt solution. Works like a charm 👌 and definitely move away from Intel. That’s a no brainer. Even sold my Intel stock. I wish I had put that money 💰 in ARM!!! 😂

Thank you for the great video as always. In your experience, would it make sense to invest to a new mac studio, taking in consideration that it is not upgradable AFAIK, when with the same amount of money I could buy a Threadripper pro with 2 or 3 RTX4090? I'm asking personally for myself as I'm doing Editing and VFX Creation.

You have 1 Mac pro, I have 3!! Terrific little demo, food for thought especially with the M3 on the horizon. We used Linux, Windows, then to Mac through the GPU shortages and now it's time to make another decision. You're right about one thing the Mac Pro systems... even maxed out... which we have, truly struggle with all of the areas that you highlighted and if Apple was able to sort out their networking problems would be a no-brainer.

So you use your Glyph to store your project assets and use your Macs internal drive for the cache. I have heard different things like should you use you internal drive to store your project assets or not or should you have a seperate cache drive? I currently use a glyph for all my project assets and another 2TB ssd that I use for all my cache files. Do you have an opinion on which you would prefer? Also curious if you are setting your cache to your internal drive what is it using the RAM for? If you have a large project and you have your optimized video set to 422 couldnt those files easily take up your 192GB of RAM or I'm assuming those are going to your 1.25 TB of cache on your internal drive. Sorry its co complicated but it is a complex topic.

    • @sanaksanandan
      @sanaksanandan 4 місяці тому

using internal drive for cache is not advised, as writing data will reduce the life of SSD. And the fact that you can't replace the internal SSD that is soldered to the board. It's better to have separate external disks if possible. 1.projects 2. assets 3. cache. Depending on your need for speed and scale, you can use 3 or all in one disk is fine too, as today's SSDs are really fast. Basically keep the cache on separate disk, as that is the most written disk. rest as per your convenience.

    • @billycrowe4501
      @billycrowe4501 4 місяці тому

Ok great what you explained was my understanding as well. He just discussed using a different meathod so I was curious. Where would you keep your database, on the projects drive I'm assuming. Qasi talks a lot about putting it on a raid drive which for me I only use to dump archives or projects onto using an archival database for each year. I can edit off my raid since most of them arent as fast as an SSD
      @@sanaksanandan

    • @sanaksanandan
      @sanaksanandan 4 місяці тому +1

@@billycrowe4501 You can keep the database in default location, on macOS drive. But, remember to take regular backups. If you change the location to projects drive, then all projects( including sound, photoshop etc) will be on same drive. Easy to backup. Either way, no difference in performance, ( OS loads first, and then you open the project), and storage, (database files are small ). Do as you wish. Best setup is, 1.OS(ssd), 2. Projects(ssd), 3. Assets/Media(hdd raid), and 4. Cache(fast nvme or ssd). Well organised and easy to backup.

If Apple had gone AMD TR 3k, 5K or better, this would have been a breeze. But they did not want to get fckd by nVidia and Intel. The WS Xeons in Mac Pro are from late 2018 in reality and they are really bad at this Workload.
AMD VEGA Series did not have REDCODE RAW gpu decompression in Resolve (should not have it now either). VEGA was also not that good at Video decode. There was a time it beat nVidias Titan X to the punch. That was 2016.
The Xeon also is too slow on single cores. Whenever there is a workload with interframe compression, effects get extremely hard on the playback speed if not fed with enough dependend frames (b, p frames)

switching from intel/amd != switching from a mac pro for the following 2 reasons:
Most intel/AMD users (non-Apple) have much newer and more performant hardware than anything Apple allowed.
It cost a LOT less than paying the Apple tax.
One question, why on earth were you grading and outputting to 264 then using prores? Both are lossy formats so you are compounding compression on compression, why not use Avid formats for mastering?
    MacPro
the Xeon-W is an old chip (released ~6months into 2019) based on an even older architecture from 2014 (refresh ~2017) so you are looking at something that on a par-to par basis would probably chew double the wattage of a modern CPU for 1/10 - 1/4 the performance of one of the newer cpus but bigger than that is the CPU die size which is 14nm vs the m series of 5nm so power consumption will be way lower on the m,
Xeons are good for stability and larger amounts of RAM, but their raw performance isn't usually as good as the equivalent i9/i7 for raw performance, let alone a multi-cpu system from AMD or AMD's equivalent Epyc.
You have a lot of RAM potenitally slowing your system down (as it has to address more, reads and writes will get slower) ECC is nice, but typically it also doesn't run as fast. The newer M series Apples do not use ECC RAM
Radeon Pro Vega - These are 3d cards primarily, maybe for editing it would have been better to grab a dedicated video encode/decode cards + 1 one of these, but I suspect Apple do not support most of the dedicated video encoding cards nor support mix-n-matching cards.
1TB ssd is pretty small even for ~2019
There is also the lack of PCI channels on the Mac Pro, so you have 2 pci 16x video cards, a pci addin card for ssds (that will take a 16x lane if available) and a local ssd (that should take 1), Apple typically only have 2 16x pci lanes (XEON supports a lot more but also depends on the motherboard handling it), so when you overload the channels they split it, so now both video cards have half their bandwidth available as they are running at 8x, the pci ssd card is now running at 8x or 4x which limits it's bandwidth (prolly why your mac pro's ssd speed is so slow) and your local ssd is now also running at 1/2 the bandwidth.
So overall in current value you are looking at around a $6-7k (AUD) system which equates to $4549 USD for brand new parts in today's values but because of the way it has been set up, it's performance is gimped.
tbh I wouldn't bother paying that for the vega II radeons as they got hammered by the 3070 ti architecture (operating at ~2/3 the performance for a LOT less), but again you had little choice here.
The extras from OWC are about the right price for expensive mid-tier ECC.
The 970 EVO ssds you got are not great (the evo 970s and 980s specifically) as they have been shown to have weird speed issues depending on batch (controllers were swapped out etc.), but they do the job ok but are a bit slow on avg. (they will run full speed for a bit, then slow down for no apparent reason even when doing full copies)
But the systems are not equivalent, you are using ecc ram on the mac pro, so if there is a memory corruption it should (OS willing) be able to correct gracefully.
RedRaw is a codec supported by the M series Apples in it's accelerators AFAIK (like a LUT for the math to transcode), but is unsupported on the Vega II architecture.
I agree completely, get a tb3/tb4/usb4 drive, you can also get enclosures that mean you can swap out the NVME m.2. pci ssds in a single enclosure and edit directly form that drive (I use 1 drive for my BM camera and edit directly from the drive).
So yes, the M-series will be much better for video editing, and will be worth it particularly for someone on the older macs. As it is a SOC, the RAM is up there with DDR6 speeds and the SSD has a huge bandwidth to the CPU (it's limited by the ssd die they are using). It will be much better value for several reasons but mostly because it is not getting in it's own way and has built in acceleration just for video editing, 3d however it falls over massively struggling with simple vertices transformations and your older mac pro should do that better (houdini) maya and autodesk started adding vertices culling to speed it up on m1 but it's still pretty poor.

Yes, the studio is fantastic… But I’m stuck on the question, "How do I have more amps, etc, running with a higher price point and assuming your house is roughly the same... unless it's ten rooms?” How is this possible?

Wasn't the top tiered Mac Pro something bonkers around $60,000? I think it's too bad Apple unnecessarily "paused" the adult-size 27" iMac to detour the market into needing *two* products instead of one: Machine and Screen. Now sold separately! Bringing your own monitor is one advantage for power users I suppose. My prediction: Apple with emerge within several seasons to announce the reintroduction of the actual iMac, this time with HDR as well as something superior, such as ProMotion (to ask for the very least!) We'll all be very impressed. But c'mon there's no reason why what now comprises the innards of a Studio couldn't have been rendered into an iMac. Like, Mac Studio + Studio Display = iMac.
    This video was great.

Been daily driving Macs for over 20 years but even I can't understand why Qazi wouldn't want to build out a PC for a professional rig like his. Latest Intel or AMD CPU with 4090 and a boat load of NVME + and latest RAM would destroy the Mac Studio in every department apart from portability, and be cheaper. File compatibility between OS's shouldn't be an issue with Davinci either. OS preference also isn't a big deal if all you're doing is using one or two professional software. What could be the reason for this?

Resolve and Windows just don't have the same marriage as the OSX and DR. I will pay any price for reliability and that's what I get with Mac for my use case scenario.
Not to mention I'm way too integrated into the ecosystem to make a switch.
I still would love to build a gaming PC one day. 😀

I have a super beefy PC that a friend custom built for me but Windows' infrastructure is just slower than Mac's, and I've noticed my Macbook Air can do some things faster than my muscle machine. I wouldn't do a PC again...unless I am again really strapped for cash.

AMD based set-up is good for raw power which is needed in things like Gaming, 3D Rendering, AI, DNA simulations etc but for video editing things are not just related with power. Windows always had problems with licensing of different formats and technologies like native HDR workflow support, ProRes RAW support, hardware accelerators etc things that you need to work yourself for to get working due to unorganised support on windows OS.
Apple on the other hand enjoys the monopoly of supporting exclusive support and software optimisation which at the end makes the user experience better.
Also efficiency plays an important role these days, A 96 core AMD Threadripper Pro 7995WX setup with 1TB of DDR5 RAM, dual RTX4090 GPU looks good but the amount of heat produced and power they consume together with all things set up is just way out of people's electricity budget. The upcoming M3 Ultra or M4 Ultra will give you similar performance results for editing consuming 1/4th of total power.

      @@iamakkkshay Just one important Distinction:
For Editing specific Formats and in DR it will be smarter to go Apple at this time, but not starve on uRAM.
However, a 4090 for Video Editing is still a lot more Capable if you i.e. make a lot of Videos like in Let's Plays and similar. 360FPS+ Live Encode AV1 is a heavy advantage in this case. You would likely Edit but not CGrade your footage then. It is a niche case, just do your research open minded :)
This is why the Advice on Professional CGrading (reliability not being measurable on a tech spec table) given by someone who DOES use it day to day like Waqas Qazi is VERY important and helpful.

@@RawmanFilm I heard somewhere that the Khronos Group in Vulkan video is bringing some new Hardware Accelerated Decoding and Encoding API for Nvidia & AMD GPU which will overpower the current ones. So let's hope it gets a stable release by the end of 2024.
But still Blackmagic needs to get HDR working for windows 11 PC as not everyone will buy an I/O device to project timeline on HDR supported monitors.

Awesome. Man I read somewhere about your experience with Mackintosh and such. I've been in the same boat as you. The Davinci x Mac marriage seems so good that it does not make sense to go the PC route. However, it is unthinkable for me that a custom build 10x the size and that consumes 4-7x the power can't be faster. I'm very much looking forward to your comparison. My guess is, it won't be as snappy in timeline performance. But once you apply NR and do heavy color grading, tracking etc. the PC will be very powerful. A great test to do also is to compare the time it takes for both systems to transcode a large pile of clips to ProRes for instance. I'd love to know if a 2TB shooting kind of day gets transcoded much faster with a PC or not.
Thanks for making the videos you make, I much enjoy them and it helps a lot with decision making! @@theqazman

You should make comparrison with RTX4090 bro, not an old intel chip :) Will be 15x times faster than this m2 ultra studio. But yes it does consume 600w electricity too
Even i do get same footage 34fps by making magic mask with half strong of rtx4090 ( i have rtx3090 )

newbie here.....the problem is, why would they release a software that no computer can handle it? it's their job to fix their software.. i mean, noise reduction, grain, and depth map should be a basic lightweight fx. I wonder, how hollywood handle this kind of thing when it comes to a big production that needs all kind fxs available.

The World of ARM, Chipdesign of specific workload Scenarios are advancing much faster than the usual X86 Architectures and Multi-Purpose CPUs. Davinci Resolve is extremely powerful. having an Effect that works at all is better than no effect. only a few years Back we did not count FPS but seconds per FRAME(!). Having it close to Realtime is enhancing the workflow a lot. DVResolve is VERY Advanced and the gold Standard for Grading.
So if you took an old Davinci Resolve version on a neewer plattform (if it was compatible) and used the state of the art features of back then, you could do less, in less time :D that is useless though.
      Ah one last example:
In 1920x1080p 8-Bit 4:2:0 Inter like H.264 you could decode h.264 in a lot more than double realtime with just ONE VEGA64; this old Mac Pro has 4 of them.
you could use about 32 Effects in Nodes chained. That does sadly not translate to 4x32 Nodes on 4 of them. They need to exchange data AND wait for eachother in the worst case. Also 4K 60 is not unusual anymore. native Decode of i.e. 4096x2160 48FPS H.265 10bit 4:2:2 is NOT accelerated by a lot of GPUs. You need to decode using general purpose which then introduces latency. all of this specifics go on and on. It really is important to know what you are going to do with your system.

The ASICs in ARM SOCs and on GPUs are doing the heavy liftig efficiently.
