  • STORYTIME ON MY DEBT JOURNEY: How I got into it and how I got myself out of it. I talk a lot on here about luxury fashion and lifestyle including brands we all love here - from Chanel to Dior. But with such things comes the need to be able to pay for them. Social media has so many amazing positives, but it also encourages us all to put our best face forward! To show the fruits of our labor and not the labor itself! Debt is a real cause for concern and SO often it’s a taboo subject, one that no one wants to admit to or talk about. My debt started when I enrolled in university. Combination of me being very immature and inexperienced in terms of managing a budget that needed to cover rent/food/books…. AND, the need to still hold-down a social life at university, which meant joining peers when everyone went out in the evenings, to the cinema, shopping etc.
    I didn’t tell anyone about my debt because I was frightened, I didn’t want a lecture (I already knew I was a fool for getting myself into it!) and I was embarrassed. Debt affects most of us at some point in our lives; whether it’s credit cards or a mortgage - but the debt spiral can be a hole that is near impossible to get out of. In this I tell you how my debt started with me wanting a packet of free coloring pencils (don’t ask), it then got so big that my salary wouldn’t cover the minimum payments. BUT, I dug my way out of it!! I want to share with you how I did that and let you know, you’re not alone and there is light at the end of the tunnel!

    I live in Ontario and had student loans like crazy. I was 40 grand in debt and wanted to get rid of it ASAP, so I ended up living out my my car while working full time. It was greasy and embarrassing, but I paid it off in 2 years.

    So true about pay day loans, I used one once and when I called to pay it back they sounded annoyed & told me a few times that I didn't need to pay it all on that day. I was like nope take your money and I've never had to go back to that. Thank God!

  • @Peteybites
    @Peteybites 6 років тому +39

    STAY AWAY FORM PAY DAY LOANS! I used to work at Cash Converters and TRUST ME, maybe 5% of people pay them off in time. All that happens is that customers need a new payday loan to cover the cost of their existing loans, and it just perpetuates. It's horrible, and only ends badly. Please take our advise, and DON'T DO IT!

    This is a fabulous video. People see the luxury videos, and too many don't realize that the person filming it didn't start out being able to afford the luxury items (unless perhaps their parents made it possible, but that isn't helping them understand the value of money). Seeing someone who made a lot of the typical unwise decisions, but took responsibility for them and worked her way out of debt is inspiring on so many levels. Kudos for being vulnerable (like you have in other videos) and hopefully helping others to work towards being as debt free as possibly. You are an inspiration. Keep up the great work!

      I told myself the same thing, no credit cards. Until I learned that they charge me foreign fees for using my bank card for overseas purchases. So I got a credit card with my bank to use during our European vacation to avoid those fees. Paid it off in 3 months to avoid the interest since i get no interest for 3 months from first use. Next time I think I'll get one with better perks like collecting points so they can be used for airfare. I think credit cards are only ok to use if you know you have the money to pay it off right away. Helps build credit score which helps in the long run when you are ready to buy a home or car.

    • @IkkyYuppie
      @IkkyYuppie 6 років тому

      Doesnt matter how much money you have in the bank, the most important thing is good credit. if you have no credit then you're screwing yourself in the long run!

    • @VanMaiTai
      @VanMaiTai 6 років тому

      Not sure if you're in he UK or the US but in the US it's actually not good if you have a line of credit open that's stagnant. It shows no record of you spending and reliably paying so it really is no help to have a credit card and not use it.

    Great content on a very important subject. When I started college I just happen to get a entry level part-time job in the credit area of a local department store (guess this would be considered a high street store). What I learned there...scared me into learning good credit habits! As I look back, it was one of my best life lessons.

    Good video and well done for sharing your story. Sadly too many people get in that trap.

    Sophie you’re so inspiring! I recently got fired from my full time job and it’s been a little hard to find my passion but I’m determined to find success thanks to you!
