Deforestation, Dendroclimatology, the Doomsday Clock and a DIY rolling pin printing press
Watch a timelapse, behind the scenes video, documenting my process of printing a drypoint etched, acetate plate, using my homemade, rolling pin printing press.
While in isolation, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, I had to find a way to continue my printmaking process, without the use of the school’s printing press. Using offcuts of found wood and two rolling pins linked together with rubber bands, I created my own printing press.
Featuring a forest of tree stumps, the print represents the destruction caused by deforestation and the resulting climate change, due to the release of stored carbon back into the atmosphere. The stumps reveal tree rings that documented the environment and climate conditions over the lifetime of the trees.
As the trees die, cracks open in the wood, like the hands of the Doomsday clock, pointing out how close we are to irreversibly destroying the planet.
