Your equine knowledge is second to none CC. So many horse owners just put their horses out to grass and have no idea how dangerous it can be. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with everyone, you’re wonderful. 👌
Thank you, @dreamcatcher3861! Totally agree, and I added my appreciation in my comments as well!
I’m in awe of CC’s knowledge. But after she told us she went to college for horses, I researched it. I’m amazed! This woman is quite the woman!
I was at my hair stylist yesterday at high noon. It sits on an incline across the road from a horse farm. As I waited for my color to set in, my stylist swiveled my chair to face the farm. She said “i wish the horses were out now..”I explained to her what I have learned and why it is wise that they are not out on that grassy pasture at that time of day. I was happy to see and to report that at least that horse farmer must know about the grass and it’s effects on horses. I am learning the most fascinating facts about horses from this channel. You would be a perfect candidate for a documentary.
That is awesome🤣
I so agree.
No, really, you should seriously consider this.
Up until just over 100 years ago, before automobiles - humans & horses had a relationship together.
We should know these things, this information is part of lost history.
People get puppies & kittens because they are adorable with no care for the adult dogs & cats. Obviously people cannot just get a horse & think all they have to do is feed & water it, throw a saddle on it & ride off into the sunset!!!
My two horses were out all the time with a run in shed. They were on about two acres of grass. They had extra hay when the grass was poor. You need to introduce horses to grass carefully, but mine had free access to Timothy grass. I never had a problem and never had to worry. They kept the grass trimmed short all the time. We have plenty of rain and the grass was good all the time. I think being on and off grass for periods of time can be a problem and having too much is a problem. Steady even amounts of limited grass is good. In the spring and summer they got very little hay. It never worried me that they might have problems because it was a steady, limited supply. It is very important not to let your horses get fat. This makes them susceptible to laminitis. Too much rich feed can be a real problem.
Hahaha you brushed Nigel,he trots away, then he turns around and rolls in the poop and then looks at you as if to say “so there”. I laughed. I had to stop the video before I could watch more. He is so funny. I know your watchers love him as much as I do. 😂❤
He is our very special little unicorn
Yes I adore that little spotted stallion.
Nigel is
pure entertainment.
Nigel is a little spoiled turd! But one can’t stop loving him!🥰 Poor CC is fighting a uphill battle with that sassy old timer!
Oh Nigel, we love you, Mr. stinker
Just a girl and her dog shopping at John Deere 💜
"Why not just turn them out and see what happens"... Having owned a horse as a kid, that was sold to me without the seller disclosing that he had foundered and having to put him down, this is the most horrifying statement I have heard in a long time! Not only could that kill them, but if you don't realize what's happening it becomes excruciatingly painful for the horse to where they refuse to even stand up because of the pain. To me that mentality borders on neglect at best, or at least a total disregard for the health and safety of your animals!
Exactly!
The only time to go shopping is for a poop wagon or a mower! Feed store is by far my favorite place outside my home. Interesting day about the horses diets and grasses ... loved it!
I know that it's not possible that Nigel is physically growing, but I swear he looks taller!! Maybe he's so full of happiness, he just looks bigger!
I think maybe his posture is better?
I think his ego grew from looking so dapper..lol
@@claudiadresel4216He is quite the dapper lad these days for sure!!
When I was a kid we had horses and one of them was a fjord named Baldir who had issues with laminatis so he would live in our garden during spring instead of on our pastures, unfortunately he was an talented escape artist who jumped fences and more impressively crawled under them as well
I have this mental picture of your horse down on his knees doing the army crawl under the fence. Lol
Positive vibes for new farm equipment in your near future!!
"Windows I can roll down to yell at Huckleberry" THE LUXURY!!! 😂😂
That’s why secretariat and died. I’ve always heard of the horse secretariat. Over the last week I’ve been watching videos about him. Holy cow. What an amazing horse. Why didn’t they catch this on him early
Secretariat?

I now have macular degeneration and can read only on screens that have dark mode and even then horizontal lines are no longer horizontal but zig jagged. Being an elder as Betty Davis said 'is not for sissies'. 😉
Gosh, more learning, thank you. It sounded like a presentation about diabetes in humans. Thank you so much. It was really interesting. 💕😊
It is a similar thing but in horses it causes swelling and extreme pain in their feet. Once they've had it once they are prone to it for the rest of their lives. If left untreated it can cause permanent damage and the pain is unimaginable. I have watched horse rescue episodes where they've rescued a horse with extreme laminitis and despite giving them the maximum amount of painkillers they still can barely walk. All because people want to get their horses out as soon as possible so they can eat grass and don't have to pay for feed anymore.
Highly recommend the riding mower. You can also hook up a little cart to haul behind
Dang, coyote stompin' horse. One less thing for you to worry about! Good division of labor. Tiny on mice, Huckleberry on gophers, Stewie on coyote patrol. And Nigel's long hair over his eyes makes me think of a sarge yelling at a recruit-"get a haircut!'
Nigel... looking in your direction with the FU face! 😂
What I especially love is that even though we can't see his face, we all know what he's thinking! Haha
Good boy Huckleberry did an excellent job of cleaning that bucket
So many, or let's say MOST people don't even research about animal husbandry before getting a pet. Most people think all you need is love. So wrong! Proper feed is the best way to show love.
Beautiful and hilarious update, my evening just got tons and tons better, thank you for that! 😄❤❤❤
Only thing to be careful of on a riding lawn mower especially if you have longest legs that sort of go to the side, don't try to mow too close to the fence. I got my leg caught in my backyard fence and really hurt myself one time because then I couldn't reach the brake. Just don't mow close to the fence.
Get a zero turn mower you'll not be disappointed, you can mow twice as fast as a riding mower saving time. Also you turning radius is a lot smaller allowing you to get places a riding mower can't. Would check out other mowers beside John Deere.. Your paying for the name not necessarily the best
Definitely second this!
I second the tip on John Deere, because they are definitely not as popular in my area as they were 20+ years ago. When I was a kid, they were THE brand to get, but between the repair exclusivity controversy and the change in manufacturing, I hardly ever see them anymore. And if farmers and lawn enthusiasts aren't buying them, there's a reason for that. It might just be budget/value, or it might be quality issues.
As far as zero turn vs. lawn tractor, it depends on what she's going to use it for. If she just wants a mower, zero-turn is a great idea. If she's going to use it for any hauling or light tractor work that she can't necessarily do with the ATV, then the lawn tractor may make more sense. Some companies make attachments for lawn tractors that could be used for raking the arena or the dry lots, sowing grass seed, plowing a garden, etc. So it's all up to her current and future plans.
I’m this big fan of John Deere. Love you wish shopping trip. Thanks for taking us with you.
thanks for the tip about 3am to 10am, I knew it's not ok to let my minis graze in the middle of the day. but i get up very early to go to work so I can let them out at that time in the morning and bring them in mid morning. I lost my first pony to this disease after a long struggle so taking it seriously is not an option for me. My friends who think I am 'fat shaming' them just have no clue.
You certainly have a change in perspective when after you see one suffer from laminitis of founder!
I highly recommend a zero turn mower. It saves so much time and is very fun to operate (very intuitive). We bought ours used online.
It's very kind of you to share your extensive equine experience in your videos CC. I don't have horses anymore but I still enjoy learning about their care. ❤
I have never had a horse and I find her informative videos great
I love Nigel! I let my minis get away with stuff that I never let my big horses get away with. 😂
The way Nigel looked at you after he rolled, I had to laugh...
Thank you for the information on the grasses!
Thanks again! I love every time you post anything, dear❤️
I’m not sure anyone knew much about grasses/sugar content over 55 years ago when I was fully invested time-wise with my horse(es) but I may be wrong.🧐. It makes me happy I didn’t lose an equine due to my grazing timing back then. Bless your knowledge and imparted wisdom as i follow your fabulous journey here! Big hugs to you and your supportive husband. 🤗
Lots of new research in the last 20 years!
@@TheCleverCowgirl ❤️
Anyone that has had a pony, or a horse breed that is pony related, like a Morgan, knows a lot about founder and laminitis. Also, laminitis on a leg that is bearing too much weight, because the opposite side is injured for too long.
There are so many types of laminitis! Supporting leg laminitis is something I am constantly worried about with Skeletor!
YES... your sharing knowledge about afflictions vs feed constituents is invaluable...THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Omg - we're the exact same in how we process and ponder on (esp expensive) new investments! Sometimes people around me accuses me of being indecisive!!! 🙃I'm not - just careful with my money. I hope you find the perfect little machine (and it's really nice to go 'window shopping' not have a sale's person breathing down your neck )
Thanks for the very informative episode of the risks with spring grass and PPID, laminitis, horse nutrition etc! I've been watching another channel where their horses are mostly on the 'well fed' _(shall we say...)_ side! I've been trying to, respectfully, inform this person that in particular their cobs are actually f a t - but unfortunately they believe them being in perfect 'cob condition' which they are not! Actually, all of their animals are of 'not skinny' body conformation!
(Sorry for the rant - it's just so annoying...)
🇸🇪
A few people have asked me who gave CC the thumbs up for the way she “trained” her horses. This is why I started watching her. I saw the UA-camr last year. The title of her UA-cam has the word “Raleigh” in it. She seems to look at various horsemanship situations and gives her opinion. I believe she has her own horses as well. She did a video on trainers and she said CC was so good.
Hey cow girl, I had a mare with. Cushions decease and I tried her on presend and it made her extremely depressed and see did stop eating so I stopped it. She did live till she was 36 bless her but for me I’d rather control the decease with good food small but often and monitor it day by day. I now have to ponies on strip grazing and soaked hay as they are prone to laminitis I do think my one pony had metabolic issue I haven’t tested as I feel I can manage it pretty well and now she’s bk in work she’s so much happier. I have 5 horses I total and each day I’m learning all of the time. You have provided sone good information in this vlog fir people that my not be aware for these situations. Great vlog 😊. Leanne
My gosh girl, you are a gift to all of us. I am learning so much by watching your channel. I don't own or ride horses but I have always loved them. Thanks for inviting us into your life. It is a wonderful way to feel connected and inspired. Namaste'
Re Huck, yes that makes sense, you did mention the baby Gopher being easy prey. My girl Tess kills Stoats which are feisty to say the lest with those sharp little teeth. Keep up the good work CCG.
I dont own horses but I vividly remember the race horse Dubai Millennium dying of grass sickness so I knew/know the danger of grass.
I can't wait for you to start Skelator under saddle. I used to ride alot with my Aunt and then camping and trail rides with my best friend. But they have both passed away a while back, so I haven't got to ride now for acouple years. And I really miss it.
My dad's family comes from Moline, IL and my aunt took me to the main factory there back in the late 80's. The biggest machine there was probably about two stories tall (a harvester if memory serves). It's mind blowing how big some of their stuff can get.
You're so incredibly knowledgeable on horses and the lifestyle that goes with it. Absolutely get a riding mower....you're exhausting yourself with the push mower.
But....did you find a pair of boots the other day??
I bought a pair I've been wanting off of Ebay!
@@TheCleverCowgirl Bravo! Nothing nicer than a new pair of boots.
I so enjoy going around with you as you do your chores. I know it sounds silly but I can live vicariously through you just watching. Deep breath, it's relaxing and calms my mind after the stresses of the day job. Keep the videos coming. This is much cheaper than therapy! haha
CC it's refreshing to know that there is a horse owner that actually studies the ins and outs of equine illnesses . Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Your friend Lou from Mi.
An informative and beautifully positive video. Thank you CC 🙂💫
We have a Gator, it's the best thing for farm work. Do it!
👍 I earned a living as a line mechanic and the right tool is important
😊thank you for this information that reminds horse owners to be aware of the spring grass in relation to laminitis/how to prevent it.
Oh! Zero Turn is the WAY to GO!!! I have had one for over 7 years and the first time I used it, I was hooked...to me, it's like riding a horse, floating in a swimming pool and ballet all at the same time!!! Love it...I had almost 6 acres to mow and it really zipped right along, but after Hurricane Michael and our torn up yard, it got quite bumpy, but it smoothed out a bit with time. I have less than 3 acres now, but wouldn't change my mower at all. Just test the seat an get one that has good cushioning - your back will appreciate it!!! ❤❤❤
Your channel will save lives , and relieve suffering. THANK YOU 🙏 🕊️
lol my dogs wait next to my horses when they have buckets, to get any of the great tidbits that fall out of their mouths.
If I were able to have a horse I would absolutely come to you to shop with me. I'd make YT folders with all your info by topic/body part for best care ever!
Thank you for this timely video. My 9 year old Welsh pony gelding just came down with acute laminitis for the first time in his life. He's been on complete stall rest for the past month and only allowed soaked hay in a slow feed hay net. This is a new experience for us. Vet will be doing a 3rd recheck this coming Monday on him and we will find out if he can be turned out for a few hours with a grazing muzzle. Ideally he would go out on a dry lot with soaked hay. This is going to be a lifetime management program for us going forward. He's usually out 24/7 in a large pasture with a run-in shed and free choice hay.
Smart and loving horsemanship your horses and animals are so loved
i have 2 acres in the Catskill mts. of NY and when I bought my abandon cabin it came with a Craftsman yard tractor. It's a 2002yr so it's a bit old but it is very tough built. I think it cost just over $2400. new but there's a online market place where you can get them cheap. When people hit on tough times they sell their toys.
I wish I had Nigel's "Hair " ❤❤❤
Nigel is a hoot. What a beautiful day there - Huckleberry fan over here!
💜💜💜
You’re right as much as I love horses I have no idea what you feed them and water them out so I didn’t know that the grass would hurt him in general so that’s an interesting thing to find out
Great vlog today. Answered lots of questions from this equine-ignoramus. I can sprout off all kinds of horsey factuals now by living vicariously through your vlogs.
I find that I can talk knowledgeably about horses too now even though I have never owned one
Impressed with your knowledge of horse diseases and care they need. I am learning a lot. Thanks for explaining your experiences with them. Grass eating and sugar levels at different times of the day.
If you haven’t tried the ThinLine Flexible Filly grazing muzzle, I have used one for years for a Cushings horse and highly recommend it. It’s far more comfortable for the horses rayan the older heavy black models. It holds up really well - I’ve only had to replace one or two of the zip ties that hold it onto the halter a couple times. Otherwise, it’s just really been an excellent alternative to the big clunky grazing muzzles
Nigl looks great! Nice and lean :)
Great horse info! Great horse names, too. Love how you try things out and make adjustments as needed and know what is needed.
Thanks for the great video !! Here's a bit towards your new 4 wheeler or riding lawn mower !
Thank you!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Interesting. Mostly I had to do with warm-bloods. Maybe that is why I wasn't aware of this issue. I believe those horses being bred in central and west Europe for generations (>1000 years; all those knights with their fancy horses, cavalry... you name it), these horse-breeds are used to lush sweet pastures. Only very far to the east or the Mediterranean you would find less lush steppes. Edit: And we see the first grass in February sometimes as early as end of January. My lawnmower goes into winter-vacation by the end of November. Horses that are not able to deal with this were very early on not part of the gene-pool any more.
I just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos. I am learning something new almost every video.
Feeding the algorithm 💜💜💜
Thank you for the info on grass and laminitis.
I'm going to keep watching, liking and commenting so you can hopefully get both vehicles this year! 😃Also I would love to see how Ziggy's training is going!
Hello The Clever Cowgirl❤❤❤❤ and Nigel, Ziggy, Tiny, Huckleberry
Interesting and amusing (at times) as always! I hope you get yourself a really nice John Deere---cool machines!
Thanks so much for all this information, in my next life I hope to remember it. You had Frisco Bill as a child? Did your parents teach you how to care for horses properly or were you self taught? Aren't there some natural pastures which contain all kinds of wild grasses that horses will pick the right kind of grass for themselves instinctively? The guy who did Benji movies wrote a book about barefoot horses and said his pasture in Missouri was the kind he could let his horses out 24/7 and that the different grasses there balanced their horses' diet out.
Nigel is awesome!
I love your narration , good info and just the rite amount of humor .thanks for the content
Thanks for another, I love your sense of humor

Great information as always for horse owners. I hope you find that perfect 4 wheeler btw. 👌
Oh Nigel, Nigel, Nigel........ lol What a clown!
I’m so glad people are getting educated about glucose intolerance in horses. I wouldn’t wish laminitis on anyone. When I lived in Alaska we had to be careful because the grass sugar content was so high.
Good luck on getting your machines. I need to get a tractor for my hay fields so I get the window shopping. 😂
What part of Alaska did you live in, Palmer?

Nigel is a star! A tiny horse with a big personality. Your commentary makes it so interesting!
Raised in the desert S.W., I never heard of floundering on anything but grain. We didn't have anything lush to eat anyway.
HaHa! Stomper could have been a good name for Stewie, lol
I Love how Nigel is such a little stinker !! LMAO 😜🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think the zero degree turn, or whatever they are called, are more practical unless you are going to buy other attachments that would need the typical tractor shape
Hi CC! Thank you for another great informational video! (At times like this, I want to call you "The Educated Equine Lover." All of your horses are looking really good. And I have to add -- that even though Skelly has been my favorite from the start -- observing him today in that shot (near the end of the video) as you're walking out to put his halter on makes me appreciate his lovely conformation even more. Is he growing? In any event -- I just want to give you a special "bravo" on how he's coming along. Your success does not go unnoticed. White light to Skelly! I LOVE that John Deere thingie with the dump on it! I hope you decide on one soon! Best regards -- JV [P.S. I edited to fix a typo.]
If you stay in Montana, maybe having a heater in the cap of your farm vehicle would be a wise choice. :)
IMO laminitis and colic are the top worries as a horse owner.
love to go along window shopping with you and huckleberry. I can see you in many of the models...perhaps your husband can gift you a riding mower!!
You can practice the reining patterns in the zero turn 😂 My friend plays around with hers
I can hear the little pew pew sound of the gophers. I guess I am team gopher. I think cats are invasive species and kill birds, mammals, and reptiles in rural areas. Where I live we have a large population of redtails, coopers, and sharpshin, so no mouse issue at the barn, plus they pick off cats, too.
so thats why wild horses arent affected by the spring grass......the grasses available to much them. arent as high risk coupled withe fact that if it becomes a problem, they simply end up getting removed from the gene pool. I always wondered about that.
🤩🙏
Is the supplement that Huckleberry likes actually Flax Seed or Black Seed?
Its it 100% flax seed oil
