An example of how good the NHS can be.
I was diagnosed (years ago) with stage 4 cancer & given 50/50 chance. I was looked after by AMAZING nurses who get far too little praise for the amazing work they do. NHS isn't perfect but it's better than not having it! My wife was diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer 20 or so months ago (having successfully been treated for it 28 years earlier). She had tests etc and in the last year or so has had:
      1. Mastectomy of the breast that was reconstructed 28 or so years earlier, after having a successful course of chemotherapy to reduce the tumours first (there were two). The surgery was totally successful and my wife will have check-ups over the next 5 years but has been told there's no reason to suspect a further return.
      2. During a scan on her upper body the medics found a lump in her brain. Further tests suggested it was a tumour that may have been there 10-15 years as there was evidence of calcification. In view of its size she had a craniotomy (lifting a flap of skull up so the lump could be removed) and a massive but symptom-free 50mm diameter benign tumour was taken out. Perfect recovery and the scar which initially looked a bit Frankenstein-ish was under the hairline but the hair has now grown back. Incredible result. The view was taken that IF the tumour had ever grown any further, it would have caused problems. The brain has now moved back to fill up the "empty space". She previously had no symptoms and if she hadn't had that scan, she'd never have suspected a thing - unless the tumour HAD grown. And by them there was no further space and brain damage was likely.
      3. The chemo did accelerate her eye issues so she had a cataract removed and a new lens put in her weaker eye. She is awaiting a visit shortly to have the second eye done but even with the one done, so far, she could drive (as she nears 70 years) without spectacles.
So - three major "operations" and all seemingly 100% successful and it cost NOTHING apart from taxes paid when we were working.
I suppose a lot of times driving my wife to various local hospitals, and paying parking fees there for her various tests, check-ups etc, but nothing really. Even my wife's continued drugs prescriptions (anti-cancer drugs - tablets - and eye drops taken after the eye op) are free because she is retired.
How much would that cost us in the USA?

But to the Far more important point. That is AMAZING news to hear your wife is doing so well. A true Champ! Please do me a favour. Give her a BIG hug from me (If that is OK with you & I'm not overstepping my place). The NHS needs Champions like her to show the true benefits it brings

It’s not true what she says about allotments. You can have them in cities if they’re available and they are really for growing your own produce. You can have a shed where you make tea, et cetera, but they basically vegetable growing places. They aren’t really a substitute for your domestic garden where you will hang out with your family and friends and play football, et cetera

    • @markbooth3066
      @markbooth3066 23 дні тому

What she said was mostly right, and I've known people use them for nurturing flowers for their gardens, as well as growing vegetables. It is getting increasingly difficult to get an allotment though, since they open up rarely and they are allotted on a first come first served basis and councils are under pressure to allocate the land to other uses.
They could be an effective way to save money though. My local allotments are around £40 a year for a 5 pole (30x45 foot plot), with a £90 deposit, and you could grow quite a decent crop on a plot that size.

It’s not just the UK and Europe that workers get a ‘fair’ deal, it’s pretty much the rest of the World, even many nations that are considered 3rd world (eg, developing) nations, workers get a fair deal.
Here’s a comparison between the USA and Australia (where I am):
The US Federal Government does NOT mandate a single day of ‘paid’ annual, sick or public holiday leave (all left to the discretion of the employer, if you’re lucky).
In Australia every full time worker is entitled, by law, a minimum of 20 days (4wks), paid annual leave, a minimum of 10 days (2wks), paid sick leave and, depending on what state we live in, approx 10 days (2wks) of paid public holidays, again, that is the legal minimum.
We get paid for 12 mths, and only have to work for 10 mths, if you use all your paid annual, sick and public holiday leave.
Healthcare - in the USA, no federally mandated universal healthcare for all, US citizens regularly file for bankruptcy over medical bills, even with private health insurance, they often beg others for help on GoFundMe.
In Australia, every citizen is entitled to universal healthcare, yes you can have private insurance if want, but no one goes bankrupt over medical costs.
Pharmaceuticals - the Australian Government regulates the price, no one dies because they can’t afford basic medicines, not so in the USA.
Federally mandated minimum wage, USA, $7.25 p/h, Australia, $23.23 p/h (on 1 July it increases to $24.10 p/h, or $915.90 for a full time 38hr week).
We also aren’t forced to ‘tip’ minimum wage earners, we don’t have to make up for what their employer should pay.
On top of everyone’s full time wage is Superannuation (retirement fund), Australian employers are required by law to deposit another 11% of your wage into your selected Superannuation Fund.
Life expectancy - USA 77.28, Australia 83.20, approx six (6) years more in Australia.
US Americans often talk about work ‘benefits’, we call them ‘basic worker rights’, we don’t have to beg, employers are required by law to pay a decent min wage, plus all of the other benefits (rights) that US workers don’t receive.
I could go on with many other comparisons too.
Bottom line, the life of the average Australian is far better than the life of the average US American.
Merica really is a 3rd world nation by how it treats its people, and it’s people are ignorant to that fact too.
    Cheers,

The best way I ever heard it described was as a difference in the understanding of 'Freedom'. The USA tends to talk a lot about Freedom as if they are the only ones that have it, while actually, in the UK and across Europe, we look at things like the laws on drinking and jaywalking, and feel America has very little freedom. You see, all through Europe and the UK, we believe in "Freedom *from* ..." - Freedom *from* oppression (even by employers), Freedom *from* worries about health and injury, Freedom *from* worrying that your insane Neighbour has 8 assault rifles...
America tends to all be focused on the freedom *to* have a gun, the freedom *to* offend others just to be an assh*le, the freedom *to* not subsidize the health and welfare of your fellow community members, etc.
It may seem like such a small difference, but it is a critical one. The freedom to starve, to us, is no freedom. Freedom *from* worries, fears, oppression, sickness, etc. is so much more important to us.
A couple of small notes on specific things mentioned in this video:
Jaywalking is not a crime here, that's true. However, if a person walks on a motorway, like your interstates, and gets hit by a car, it is effectively written off as suicide. Not all roads are the same. It is the pedestrianized or urban roads where the onus is on the driver to beware of pedestrians, and in certain circumstances, like a zebra crossing, even if someone rushes out into the road, the driver is considered at fault, possibly guilty of manslaughter, because it was his job as the controller of a vehicle to be expecting and looking for people crossing at a designated crossing.
On Taxes, while the first tax bracket is indeed a sudden jump, you are not taxed 20% of say, a £18,000 salary. You get that free part always, so as mentioned here, the first £11,000 is not taxed and you'd pay 20% on the amount over that limit (£7,000 = £18k - 11k). The 'basic allowance' is never taxed or touched.
Sick Leave - while it is technically unlimited, an employer can never, ever 'force' a sick employee to work, only a certain amount is *paid* sick leave (but this is still a considerable period of weeks not just days), then there's usually a reduced pay period for sickness beyond that time (but still paid), and finally there is unpaid sick leave. Being suddenly diagnosed with a serious illness, or having a significant accident is already a huge enough trauma for people, without having to worry that they'll also be fired as well. That freedom *from* thing again.

Nurses coming out to my home to help dress me daily for another month then follow up appointments with my surgeon, pain medication and the cost to me £0.00. All paid for by paying for our taxes which come straightout of my wage so I dont notice it, nobody questions it as we know our Health is covered as part of that. I am still here anyway because my Astma and Epilepsy and Asthma drugs are also paid for by the NHS. My father had 2 triple heart bypasses and my Mum looked after for 5 months at the end of her life. I never know whether to tell people about Brighton, or to keep my mouth shut about it: - the most incredible city (well it's Brighton & Hove now.) in the UK. Where is the most fairytale palace in UK? The WORLD's most famous Toy Museum? The numbers of Georgian squares? The the most unique city in the UK? The most eccentric people? The most theatre/live performances/comedy in the UK?
The most important Gay Parade? (And the biggest Naked Bike Riders parade) in UK?
AND...the beginning of the White Cliffs, bursting with fossils...which I have quite a collection of by now.
Brighton ticks all those boxes. And is also the most tolerant city in UK?
Yeah, that and much more is Brighton - which every vlog so far I've seen as USA information shows a Ferris wheel as a Brighton installation... but which closed down about 8 years ago!
It's only an hour outside of London so many people who work in London live in Brighton-& often get to travel less than many Londoners in order to get to work!

Unlimited sick days ks a litrle misleading. Anyone can self certify sick for 5 days and then you need a sick note from a medical professional to say how long you will need off. However depending on your illness this can be for months and pay varies. There is something called Stautory Sick Pay which is is about £115 per week for up to 28 weeks and is paid by employer and then they claim it back from the government. Some employers e.g civil service, NHS have generous sick pay ( and maternity ) packages but eventually there will be plans to either get you back to work or make you retire through ill health from that particular job.

The 4 weeks do not count bank holidays- not anywhere I've worked anyway. My last job I got 7 weeks annual leave and bank holidays in lieu. Also they are comparing sales tax with income tax which are completely different taxes. Our equivalent is value added tax which is only on what someone considered luxury goods. It's always included in the price so you don't really notice. I can't believe they don't do tax returns in Florida? I would have to google that. I know that Americans have to file taxes every tax year. You do same here if you are self employed but most jobs have PAYE which deducts tax from every time you are paid before it goes into your bank so we don't miss it unless we look at our wage slip and see how much tax was taken out of our wages.
