Hi, I’m a sophomore taking the test this year and just started to study today for the AP World test. Do you think reading the whole amsco book and hemilers history’s (crash course + ultimate review packet) would help me? Also would you recommend me doing something else, which would help me? Thank you so much! I appreciate it
Also, would you recommend taking the test in person or digitally this year. I have the option of both but I really don’t know which to choose. Sorry for so many questions 😅😅
yes I absolutely do think those things will help! The amsco especially! Just make sure you aren’t stressing yourself out with trying to memorize every detail. If you’re going to get through the entire amsco, you have to just get a general idea of what you’re reading. It might feel like you’re missing stuff, but all you need are big ideas. (lmk if what I just said doesn’t make sense lol)
@@marinaghaly9525 Hmm Im going to take mine in person just because I personally have a hard time focusing when I read on computer screens. Also, when I took the Ap world exam, something about the adrenaline of being in a big testing room def helped me. Also, since AP exams are so fast paced, it’s hard to use your notes for them, so I don’t think either way will give you an advantage. It’s more just personal of where you focus better! I watched this video a while ago and listened to most of her tips. If u want a 5 do what she says or at least a variation that suits you. Don’t rely on ur teacher Bc they can’t get that score for u.
Aw that is so sweet! I hope it went well, and just know you did amazing no matter your score just for taking the class under such hard circumstances this year
Thank you so much for this video!! Online school has been rough for me & the exam is right around the corner, so this gave me so much insight. I was wondering how did you split up the units in such a limited amount of time? I'm taking it soon & struggle with organization.
yeah I know online school is tough! I'm in quarantine right now and just this one week of online school is giving me flashbacks to last year lol I can't imagine doing ap world this way! I just did a little bit every day and I didn't try to memorize everything. If you try to be a perfectionist, you won't get through it. Even if it feels like you aren't learning enough, you ARE. Just do a few minutes every day, and don't spend too long on any unit! I know for AP students it's hard not to be a perfectionist, but you have to trust the process
yes!! one thing that helped me was doing LOTS of practice AP Exams and comparing what I wrote to what people who got perfect scores wrote! apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-world-history/exam/past-exam-questions these are sample essays that the college board released :)
Thank you so much for this! It’s really helpful to hear you say that I don’t need to take notes on everything.. I tend to lean towards that perfectionist work style and I take notes on everything which wastes so much time because I don’t even retain the information I’m writing down because I write down way too much!! Unfortunately my school uses this really old extremely boring textbook and it’s really difficult to understand, so I struggle with learning key concepts n such, I’m thinking about trying the amsco and Princeton books though.. do you mind sending me an Amazon Link to where I can find them? I’ve never heard of the amsco book before... also I’m going to start watching the John Green videos and using your method of only filling up a sticky note. Thank you so much again for all of these AMAZING tips !!!!
yay I hope the video helps!! Here's the AMSCO www.amazon.com/Advanced-Placement-World-History-Modern/dp/1531129161 Here's Princeton: www.amazon.com/Princeton-Review-World-History-Preparation/dp/0525569707/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Princeton+world+history&qid=1618914633&s=books&sr=1-2
someone in the comments reminded me that only the teacher's version of the AMSCO book has the answer key but someone commented the link to the answer key docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1zhwc48vxyNiujL3SqmGKEY-dlWEzBaYywFx6QYbPjIQ/mobilebasic
i remember spending 2 weeks making flash cards of all the content that was going to be on the test mid april..... yea big waste of time lol and it was only the DBQ (2020) :/ then i realized that i should just focus on my weak skills for DBQ (evidence, context, and mainly analysis). I did a bunch of practice isolating those skills and just grinded them out like 2 weeks before the exam. during that 2 weeks i probably only did like about 5 full practice DBQ. In the end i felt like i got much better at those skills i practiced. End result... it paid off and got a 5 :) (and probably with some luck with easy DBQ prompt). So tip to u WHAP students, don't focus too much on trying to memorize content, just like Nicole said, know about big events and ideas (ex./ columbian exchange, imperialism, industrialism) and grind out AP EXAM practice questions. Since this year is the full test, full length practice tests are good idea too because it trains ur mental stamina. Maybe watch some heimler's history too if u need help on any tips, strategies or skills. Also another thing, reading over student sample DBQ's is also helps u know what a good essay should look like.
my ap world exam is on may 10, i am stressed with a lot of other hw to do but when do u think is a good time to start studying for the ap exam? a month? a month and a half? thank u so much, and this video was really helpful!
I vividly remember the day that I calculated my mock exam score (and found out it would have scored a 2) was my birthday--march 29. It was just a few days after that I started studying so about exactly this time of year
Hii! This video is super helpful, quick question. What videos did you watch of John Greene? Was it a playlist? I'm trying to search them up now, could you let me know the titles of them or what UA-cam playlist it was? Thanks for this!
I think what people are misunderstanding is that I got a 2 on the mock exam a month before because I had consistently been doing bad in the class. You know more than you think and just taking this test is an accomplishment ! Good luck :)
thanks! Yes the amsco is 100% worth it! the big difference about it and normal text books is that it’s much more condensed, so it only has the information you might need rather than a million little details like most text books. Also it has lots of practice stimulus questions! My teacher made us read some chapters of our normal text book, but in preparing for the AP exam, I didn’t use the text book
I’m a freshman and I’m like last minute panicking if I should take ap or honours world. I just worry that ap will be too much work and overwhelm me but I also worry that I’ll regret not taking ap.
I think you should try AP! I struggled all the way through until I started listening to my teachers study advice. I think the class is really important to learn how to study, and it prepared me for all the rest of my AP classes. I say go for it because it’s a good learning experience, and worst case scenario, you drop
My WHAP teacher never assigns homework. this may seem like a good thing but in reality it means there is nothing to practice/review AND you have nothing to balance out the tests. I have a 85.66 in the class and it’s only been dropping because I bombed the last two (a B- and then a C) and I really don’t know what to do I’ve tried everything :’(
omg I had the EXACT same problem with Ap Lang last year!! It’s so stressful :( but there are ways you can assess yourself -look up past essays and responses for Ap world and write your answer to the prompt or write an outline of what you would write. Then, analyze the essays that got perfect scores and see what they did differently from you -next you can get lots of books with practice questions to asses yourself. For example, the AMSCO is my favorite but there’s also the Princeton and Barrons
me watching this a day before the exam 👀👀👀 it’s ok tho i’ve done extremely well in class and according to former students of my teacher her exams are much harder than the AP exam
lol former students of my teacher said the exact same thing. she'd always pick the longest stimuli ever for the questions, and her practice dbqs had the wackiest sources known to man 💀 one of them was literally a picture of a porcelain box on a dbq over religious tolerance when i got to the ap exam i was like "this is it???" lol
hi! i will definitely be using this video to study, i’ve been struggling in this class. i was wondering if the ways of the world textbook helped? i’ll definitely read amsco and the barons but just wondering! also, any tips for doing good on the dbq’s, leq’s, and saq’s? thank you!
No the big thing people are misunderstanding is I mean that I was set to get a 2 a month before the test. Most people are set for a lil higher than that, but I had been struggling the whole year until that point
Hi! I just began studying. My plan is to go through and memorize all(as much as I can) of the princeton review prep book and then going through past frqs + doing mcq’s. Will that be enough to get a 5? Tysm and congrats on your 5!
hey! Yes I think that def will help! The only thing I’d recommend is don’t try to memorize everything. I tried to do that, and it was taking me way too long. I recommend just reading it! Even if it feels like you’re not getting all the details, you just need big points and at the end you can take notes and memorize parts you struggled with
Thank you for the video, it was very helpful! I have never opened the textbook, and I’m taking the test this year. I just started reading through the Princeton’s book. Is this too little information to get a good score on the Ap exam? If so, what else do you recommend?
I think the Princeton book should be enough as long as that’s what you learn best with! You could try other things like video series or other review books, but I think picking one that works for you should be enough!
ua-cam.com/video/zWx2LQ6glOs/v-deo.html on this video I explain how you can learn the essays by reading high scoring essays! I put links in the caption of this video :)
So I set up a calendar to plan out how I could finish reading the entire AMSCO (which was our review book--but any review book will work) and watch all of John Green's Crash Course videos. On days that I watched the videos on double speed, I could get about 3 or 4 in 20-30 minutes. It also took me 20-30 minutes to read a chapter of the review book. If you try taking too many notes, it will take longer than that. At first I got worried that I wasn't retaining anything, but then I realized that I was and getting a bigger picture is the most important part of the exam since so many of the essays are about making big connections. On weekends, I'd spend longer amounts of time to take notes and organize information. (Sorry this a long response, but I hope it helps and makes sense!)
@@NicoleMartinsayshi When you talk about taking notes on the weekend, what exactly were you taking notes on? Notes from the textbook? Thank you so much for all your advice!
yeah I was like that too! I tried to find some key to understanding the multiple choice questions, but really, the only way to get them right is to get used to them. If you get any practice book (amsco is the best but you could also do Princeton or Barron’s), I recommend doing what I did and answering lots of multiple choice questions. After each document, check your answers and see which ones are right and wrong. I answered hundreds of questions doing that
What do you recommend for MCQs? I feel like I have a general idea of the unit I’m learning but idk how to apply it to MCQ. Do you also know any ways I can practice MCQ for a specific unit besides college board. My teacher doesn’t really put much even when we need it
I'm trying to study instead of stressing haha. But when you said we need to know general topics, do you mean for the multiple choice? And then we would need to remember minor details for the response questions? (If we do need to remember some minor details, how do you retain them? I feel like there's tooooo many important ones)
really for everything you need to know just general ideas! Knowing the big events and being able to connect things together will help you realize you retained waaaay more than it felt like you retained! Every year around this time of March when I start studying for AP exams, I get super overwhelmed with my study plan. Then, once I'm a few days into it, it becomes much easier and I find myself retaining more than I think-- you just have to trust the process lol :)
@@NicoleMartinsayshi This is so helpful, thank you! It seems like studying a little but consistently, is much better than barely studying throughout the month but studying 5-6 hours every day a week before the test.
should i start reading/highlighting the amsco book as i go through the class, when we finish talking about all of the content, or just as soon as possible?
@@mattshedd9569 so if you're taking it next year, I would do what I've done with my ap us class this year which is read the AMSCO chapters for each unit as we learn that unit in class. I'm taking notes on it so that when we finish the content, I don't have to actually read the whole AMSCO-- just my notes. Does that answer your question?
NO DONT CRAM! I promise you know more than you think and the most productive thing you can do is review some but don’t overload yourself and make sure you SLEEP! Think of it this way- the test is soooo long that it’s like running a marathon. You wouldn’t go run a marathon before a marathon because that’s counterproductive. Some review will help, and you’re gonna realize you know more than you think
@@NicoleMartinsayshi ohhh I was just asking what year it was from, thank you! I haven’t been very good at mcq’s this year so I wanted to practice with the Princeton also. Thank you!!!
I read the whole thing but not in depth because that would have taken too long. I didn’t take notes on it or high light- I just read and accepted that I wouldn’t retain everything. At the end, you can review parts you struggle with

For me that’s in person but different for everyone :)

Woah that’s impressive! Good luck!!

it's ok you probably did great! And now you know what to expect for future ap exams!
Do you have last-minute tips for DBQ?
My test is in few days
yes!! one thing that helped me was doing LOTS of practice AP Exams and comparing what I wrote to what people who got perfect scores wrote! apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-world-history/exam/past-exam-questions these are sample essays that the college board released :)
Here's the AMSCO www.amazon.com/Advanced-Placement-World-History-Modern/dp/1531129161
Here's Princeton: www.amazon.com/Princeton-Review-World-History-Preparation/dp/0525569707/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Princeton+world+history&qid=1618914633&s=books&sr=1-2
someone in the comments reminded me that only the teacher's version of the AMSCO book has the answer key but someone commented the link to the answer key docs.google.com/document/u/0/d/1zhwc48vxyNiujL3SqmGKEY-dlWEzBaYywFx6QYbPjIQ/mobilebasic
i remember spending 2 weeks making flash cards of all the content that was going to be on the test mid april..... yea big waste of time lol and it was only the DBQ (2020) :/
then i realized that i should just focus on my weak skills for DBQ (evidence, context, and mainly analysis).
Also another thing, reading over student sample DBQ's is also helps u know what a good essay should look like.
yes i agree!!
Just to make everyone feel better, I got a 2 on apush last year 😃
did last year really exist tho like don’t worry, you’ve got it this year
my ap world exam is on may 10, i am stressed with a lot of other hw to do but when do u think is a good time to start studying for the ap exam? a month? a month and a half? thank u so much, and this video was really helpful!
Yes! :) ua-cam.com/play/PLBDA2E52FB1EF80C9.html
in one month??! the test is tmrw 💀
I think what people are misunderstanding is that I got a 2 on the mock exam a month before because I had consistently been doing bad in the class. You know more than you think and just taking this test is an accomplishment ! Good luck :)
Okay, now how do I do this in less than two weeks
that’s still enough time to study! Good luck :)
awesome video! is the amsco textbook rly worth it? what’s the difference between this and our normal one? and what did u do with the textbook?
It’s so stressful :( but there are ways you can assess yourself
-look up past essays and responses for Ap world and write your answer to the prompt or write an outline of what you would write. Then, analyze the essays that got perfect scores and see what they did differently from you
-next you can get lots of books with practice questions to asses yourself. For example, the AMSCO is my favorite but there’s also the Princeton and Barrons
I’m thinking about making a video for this so you can be on the look out for that!
ua-cam.com/video/zWx2LQ6glOs/v-deo.html

it’s ok tho i’ve done extremely well in class and according to former students of my teacher her exams are much harder than the AP exam

lol former students of my teacher said the exact same thing. she'd always pick the longest stimuli ever for the questions, and her practice dbqs had the wackiest sources known to man 💀 one of them was literally a picture of a porcelain box on a dbq over religious tolerance
when i got to the ap exam i was like "this is it???" lol

Even if it feels like you’re not getting all the details, you just need big points and at the end you can take notes and memorize parts you struggled with
But as far as doing practice frqs and mcqs, that will help SO much!

I got a 5 on my AP Human Geography Exam without studying...
good job !
20 to 30 minutes what am I studying please

The AP world history test is in 22 days, atp I'll be really lucky if I even get a 3😭😭, hoping for a 4 tho
hey quick question, i have been understanding all of the material, but i suck at multiple choice questions do you have any advice?
yeah I was like that too!
My teacher doesn’t really put much even when we need it
I am just starting to study now and do you think the Kaplan ap world history book is good to study?
I've never heard of that, but as long as it has info for all the concepts, I bet it is!
@@NicoleMartinsayshi ahh okay thank you so much for the tips!
