- Take a drive with me in the Emerald Bullet. I feel more torque with the 2.8 liter motor than I did with the 2.2 liter. My butt dynometer says it is much faster. How does the engine sound to you? Is this what a 2.8 liter Mercedes Benz engine is supposed to sound like? Notice all the gauges and the clock working.
What a fantastic car these were. I remember driving my father's 220SE, W111 in 1966. I was 19 years old ,, and no car today comes even close to the pleasure it gave me Thank you for making the video. You lucky bastard to own one. ! Only wish I could afford one of these in Australia today. Driverless cars are the future ? Thank god I probably won't live to see it.
You don't need to put first gear unless you came to a complete stop. Just depress the clutch and then release it slowly while acelerating and you can keep second gear while almost stopped. And no it's not a 3 speed, it's a 4 speed.
You should lubricate the doors, steering, etc. Sounded a bit creeky to me. Otherwise sweet car man. Engine sounds fantastic and interior looks great. I also really lime the manual column shifter. Nice car, and thanks for sharing!
My original 230 was bad repaired, one piston rod broke out of the oil sump. I found a W114 250E that was converted to carburators. My car is a W111 1968 Automatic. I now I can't pass 3200RPM or it will shift to the next gear. I didn't know it was going fast until some neigbhbours told me they were trying to catch me up ( we live in a hilly zone) and no wonder what they did, they just couldn't
Love the enginesound,true vintage
seems to be a 4 cyl engine
seems to be geared very slow, something in the area of 4:1
these cars had a built-in quality that is more rewarding than sparkling performance
Mercedes Benz W111 this model from the James Bond movie in 1969. On her Majesty Secret Service.
@brocpoet Thank you. We've fixed the problem temporarily! I should post some videos after restoration!
@aaocc
I believe it is linked to the gearbox by rods.
Love the car, but the gearbox seems rather fiddly. is the lever on the steering column something you can get easily used to?
@Coen1121221212121212
Actually, the shifter has new bushings and the system works properly. I never have any problems moving from gear to gear.
my guess is the engine sounds more like a 2.2 on 6cyl (though, I am having doubts on some moments it sounds a bit like a 2.0 on 4cyl)
It sound like a shit! They never refurbish the car. Even the transmission is noisy! Probably even the wheel bearings. A very bad tribute to the then state-of-the-art automobile.
I've driven the similar model diesel power 4 cyl also shifter on column back in 1988 the way it shift so easy it remind me driving a 1950 Studebaker champion except the Mercedes has more power
Vary good 👍
That's how a 6 cylinder diesel should sound like :-)
no way
Wait do you use unleaded fuel for 60's engine? If u use your engine's valve will broken like my 1964 220se.
Sounds like its a diesel. My 1966 200D sounded like this. if that is NOT a diesel engine, then it sounds like a lot of valve train noise.
how to show turn signals?
Had a 250s and 280sel didn't sound like yours in fact they so quite you can only the engine if you rev it around the 4k rpm. Yours sounds really bad. By the way the 1st and 2nd gears is just to get moving so stop revving the shit out
Gus Ibrahim you proably had a w108 because w111 never came AS 250s or 280sel, and ITS suppose to sound like this although he is way to late to change gears
Will done
Actually, if there is a way to submit pics to get opinion, dont know where to start. Vendors....
Is this VW Bug?
يستخدم النقله الاولي كتير جدا للاسف
The car is making engine/transmission noise like hell. This is very regrettable! When in good condition, the car wouldn't produce more noise than modern cars! This is a shame. How dare you show a car in this conditions? The car deserve a general (serious) overhaul by dedicated mechanics. A shame!
Nice Car Mate. I have a 280se 1968 and just love it. Thanks for taking us for a ride:)
I like the sound, it brings me back many fond childhood memories.
The vertical ribbon type speedometer with colors changed from yellow to red is so fantastic.
Thank you for sharing.

Congratuilations man, you do have a precious car. I absolutely enjoyed the video, its so cool, amazing how it drives smoothly throug the gears.
1960 - 1970 ... this is gold era of automobiles absolutely. No plastics, no syntetics, no electronics but big motors, a lot pains and spiritual designs
Engine certainly sounds 6-cylinder..more smooth running & subdued sounding when revved up unlike the 4-cylinders which become harsh & loud.
I believe in those days they did have a 6-cylinder petrol engine of 2.2 litre so whether 2.2 or 2.3 (in the newer 230.6 W115) or 2.8 W108) etc. the sound i hear here all 'belongs' to that era of Mercedes-Benz 6-cylinder engines, which of course is somewhat different from their newer 6-cylinders from W116 onwards.
On a sidenote, if you want to get hear something quite similar, the Citaro bus (with the smaller 6.4 litre in-line 6 diesel) sounds something like that in a kick-down acceleration mode ! I understand these old car engines are from a very different era from a modern bus engine but (surprise or not) they can sound alike too..being 6-cylinder in configuration i'll say is the basic ingredient behind it.
This feels like having a relaxing ride, as a passenger, in this lovely car!
driving scene like from old great movies
this one needs some grease, you will have to top up the grease in all the 16 points , being suspensions, shaft etc... , valves need looking into and tuning and timing , but it moves all you need is some TLC , I like the manual on the Nelson, all I have is a auto but I feel true driving is on tree for a car this age...Nice video , enjoyed it and good Luck Mate...
Thanks for the drive!my dad's car and I love it!
Man I love these cars... I'm currently trying to find a rear end for my '63 220s... no luck.
old German stick shift.
My family had a sedan 220s 1961 and this video, got me a time to remember. Thanks.
It brought lots of childhood memory back. Thank you. Sadly I do think you engine needs some overhaul because it runs way too rough.... Great video.
Cool. I have a good to go 230 find all myself I'm down in San Antonio. I'm thinking about selling it.
Do you know your steering wheel is upside down nice motor man
Hace mucho ruido, recuerdo que el de mi padre era supersilencioso, que me gustaba conducirlo !!!
My car in 1975, engine replace in France whenretourning from England to Switzerland.
Fantastic!
Great video! Feels like we're sitting right there with you!
Beautiful classic M Benz sedan! Mike from Missouri
BUÖTME MERSEDESE HİÇ YAKIŞMAMIŞ
Jesus...stop reving the shit out of the old lady...she's not a race car.
Yes she is a Race Car, she won Rallies check out ua-cam.com/video/HTJNt7NFNOo/v-deo.html
That is some boooring shit - not even a pic of the outside.
4 speed, not 3
What a nice video! I like it. :)
East Btm Thank you!
Is the rattling of the valves /hydros normal or comes it by the age of the car? Very nice Video! In Germany we call ist the "drifting dune" - the discovery of slowness
Oh my what a car... such phenomenal beauty and elegance is mind bogglingly stunning.
The best part of the beauty is that it’s a 4 speed column shift manual transmission and that my friend is pure Royal and a Majestic Pride of Classic Beauty.
Oh yah. She's faster and louder, of course. You just added a six cylinder and had the original rebuilt to boot! Nice. Want to sell it to me? I'll take it.
Beautiful!! I love it.
That stick looks confusing and labour intensive. Nice car. Bigtime old merc fan here.
Great project, how much did you buy the car initially? How money did you put in considering all the listed repairs. Definitely a labor of love. I have an opportunity to purchase the exact model but different color. I wanted to know if its worth pursuing or not
The color change on the "barber pole" speedometer indicates gear Chang. The is three speed manual transmission.
Me ha gustado mucho👍
nice car. ill have to do the same sort of vid in my mercedes :D
Looks a nice car. I think you forgot to use your indicators though. Or didn't they have them for this model year?
Current posh cars do that a lot too, turning into a street without using blinkers, so you have to let another 50 or so cars pass before you can get to the other side of the road, instead of being able to go while the car turning in slows down traffic.
Brings back childhood memories.
But my late German uncle would never have revved the engine that hard and change gear much earlier.
sounds incredibly low geared, my old 71 280c gas was a nightmare on the highway. sounded like 4500 rpm at 80.
خیلی جداباست
Hi, was that a cold start? Sounds great with the M130.
I have a rear end in storage... Will trade you a six-pack of root beer for it.
Thanks for the video. I had a 62 190 C in college. It brought back many memories.
???Couldn't afford at least some drops of oil to heal the door squeaking???
valves are a bit noisy, so mercedes engine noise not what it should be,but i really enjoyed the ride ! i had a 220 s 1962 ,automatic, had a nice red leather interior.
Idk why the engine so noisy like my 2002 c200
First my car...
Das Auto! What a great car! Looks to be real quiet and comfortable as a MB should be.
i know theyre not made for speed, but how fast have you gotten up to in this?
Hello @brocpoet
I own a 62' 220SE with auto transmission. Would you happen to know how the column shifter is linked to the gearbox? Via cable or something else?
Via rods.
Watch the video in full screen mode and 1080P HD for best viewing. The video was shot with the new Nikon D7000 DSLR camera mounted on a tripod.
You better repair the car before talking about video resolution! It sound like a battle tank after Russian Barbarossa Campaign. What a shame. The cars at that time where not noisier as present cars! You are driving the car like a 30-ton truck!!!!
what is the color change sequence of the speedometer
ty for this cool ride....
I enjoyed that mile!
(A fellow Mercedes enthusiast)
You are right. Didn't realise it.
wow you like to rev it dont you? :) nice car though, powersteering?
steeringwheel isnt much smaller in either 600 or w108 ive never owned a 111 or read to much into them i was just asking.
bademeister i just thought it looked like he turned that wheel very easily. the cars ive driven without powersteering made me use all my strength for it to turn.
yeah that is a thing of the past unfortunately, here in sweden the diesel has gone up again and is more expensive than the petrol.
i drive a 123 240D which i picked up from a field almost 5 years ago, but its in pretty bad nick now, rear axle is crap, front suspension arm has snapped, brake mastercylinder most likely gone too or one of the brake curcuits, and the rust of course but it runs brilliantly fires up like nothing, and none of the w123s ive driven are as easy to shift as mine.
What is the shift pattern?
German cars ..The best
What is that ticking sound? A valve or something else?
MFI, most likely. Mechanical Fuel Injection clicks and rattles a lot compared to a carburetor.
The sound is lovely.
@methegamerz Yup.
Do you still own this W111? Did you repair the dashboard?
I sold the Emerald Bullet.
@@brocpoet why ?
@@volkerleiste6191 I have retired from restoring cars. I had a 1953, 1957, a few 1962s and two 1972 280SE and a 280SEL 4.5. It was a worthy passion.
@@volkerleiste6191 I have a collection of parts and tools for sale cheap in Houston Texas.
@@brocpoet 😎 I own a March 1976 350Se (W116) and a May 1985 380SL (R107) only. And both cars need a lot of attention / driving....
There is still a W111 and a S123 on my "list of wishes" but I know I don't have the time to drive 4 oldtimers....
plz let me know how to use reverse gear
Pull all the way towards yourself then, up.
cool car, my father had this one
My dad's boss had a green Heckflosse 190D, 1965. He also had two very pretty daughters. Others in my school class admired the daughters, I admired the car😅
I remember my dad had one with speedometer that changes color as you go faster from green to yellow to orange to red. I’m hoping I’m remembering that correctly.
I have a w115 D and keep it alive with parts cars....Whew.
