More Fun than Fast: Jennilee's 1973 Mini | Why I Drive #4

  • Jennilee Calkins didn't grow up in the classic car scene. But when she walked into a restoration shop a few years ago and laid eyes on a vintage Mini Cooper, something clicked, and she just had to have one of her own. Like many Minis, it's a hodge-podge of parts from different years, but that doesn't bother Calkins. It's a blast to drive-and that's all that matters.

I passed my driving test in my grandmother's mini, the best fun car ever and incredible roadholding too. If I could afford one now I would buy one. The best of British, thanks Mr issigonis.

This was absolutely refreshing!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽. In an environment where you usually see men of all ages and different parts of their life's story, or young women who are usually in the college years or are otherwise non obligated; it's so wonderful to see a mother of 3 children and all the responsibilities that come with it. Still making the time to pursue a passion that though small in an individual sense, is big in it's happening; by paying tribute to an icon through preserving a classic car, taking the mental and spiritual recharge needed for today's demanding world ( something many people should be doing) when she drives it and lastly but still equally great in importance, allowing a connection to be established with a new generation that marries youthful enthusiasm to old era. And In so doing, they too may grow up to carry on that preservation and appreciation into their distance future. Blessings to Her, her family and this channel! Thank you 🙏🏽

I also share a huge appreciation for the Classic Mini. As a 16 year old diehard petrolhead id never want to settle for a Vauxhall corsa or a Ford Fiesta for my first car. It’s something you remember and look back on fondly. A late night on ebay led me to my first car. A 1980 British Leyland Mini Clubman full of rust holes, filler and yet underneath all that, a stunningly beautiful yet aggressive little car hides. She’ll be on the road one day. She’s a project all right but one that should be done soon and as someone who has decent mechanical knowledge but who hasn’t tackled something like this I can assure you there is no better starting point than a Mini

The irony of an insurance company having a video of clearly a much newer mini than a 1973 mkIII is not lost on me.
America had a policy of not letting cars be imported unless they were 25 years old (to help boost their own car sales) so unscrupulous importers would just change the plates of a much newer mini and say it was a 1973.
They will still crush them today if they are found to be misrepresented.
The reversing light rear clusters, the interior, the badging, the non 10" wheels all show clearly that it's not a '73
Ironically the insurance company wouldn't pay out if they found out!!

Grew up driving on winedy roads in all kinds of vehicles. The most fun was small death traps. The knowledge of knowing your limits and the cars. Kids now just fly off the roads. Driving by the seat of your pants. Understanding wheel base, top heavy, centrifugal force, inertia, how & when to shift and a dozen other things. You had to pay attention. Good times.

This remember me of my 1962 Austin Healey Sprite.
Cute little thing, turned on a dime.
Every Saturday morning practically, plan on rebalancing the carburetors and tighten up the exhaust manifolds -pipes that keep loosening.
    Dangerously small!!
That was a main reason why I got rid of it, had too many near misses.

    • @ryanmcneill7492
      @ryanmcneill7492 6 років тому +1

Correct. No such thing as a 73 Cooper anyway unless it’s an Italian built Innocenti. A 73 Mini of any type would be a mark 3 . That’s a mark 5 . As you say , more like 1990’s . I hope the owner wasn’t duped into thinking it’s the real deal. There is the added issue of a great many car enthusiasts in North America referring to all classic Minis as “Coopers” when in fact only a few hundred thousand out of over 5.5 million classic Minis built were actually Cooper or Cooper S ‘s . Still a nice little car though !

    • @brokenpartstiresmokeoffici7132

      You’re right. It looks like a 1992- on SPi ( mk6) or a
1997-on MPi ( mk7) which is not allowed in the states... And I know that because I have a mini myself, a 1991 mini mayfair ii.

Great to see a Mini being driven … thats a much newer shell than '73 though, hinges, seams, lights, etc are typical of an Mark IV, so at least '76-, more likely late '80s/90s. So not a Cooper as described. In the classic line "Cooper" is much more than just a branding exercise, it was a seperately developed car, something that BMW has done much to lose.
