  • “Man with a Movie Camera” (Chelovek s kinoapparatom) is an experimental Ukrainian / Soviet silent documentary film, directed by Dziga Vertov, filmed by his brother Mikhail Kaufman, and edited by his wife Yelizaveta Svilova. Kaufman also appears as the eponymous Man of the film. It presents urban life in the Ukrainian cities of Kiev and Odessa during the late-1920s. From dawn to dusk the citizens are shown at work and at play, and interacting with the machinery of modern life. “Man with a Movie Camera” is famous for the range of cinematic techniques Vertov invented, employed or developed, such as multiple exposure, fast motion, slow motion, freeze frames, split screens, extreme close-ups, tracking shots, reversed footage and stop motion animations. In the British Film Institute's 2012 Sight & Sound poll, film critics voted it the 8th greatest film ever made, and it was later named the best documentary of all time in the same magazine. Bel Air Music has edited a short version and added their sound-track: "Bach in Classical and Jazz", recorded by Bel Air Music 11/2003. Featured on the double CD BAM 2034 in Apple Music and the iTunes Store.
