I love this so much and get so frustrated that literally no one else I know hears it or gets it. The subtle details of her vocals, the emotional venerability, the vocal harmonies. I keep coming back year after year.
Her upper range is absolutely ridiculous, I don't think people understand how much vocal control it takes to jump what, like two octaves? She's like Hank Williams Sr. meets Sarah Vaughan and she's incredible
It's a register change in the way that yodelling does them. It's not so much a linear change as it is like slipping into falsetto. It's actually not that tough to do at all (nowhere near as hard a jump like what folks do in classical singing) and it's a staple of Appalachian music.
Yeah, it's really hard to hear, that something really good is going on with her voice. That's only clear to select experts who have the gift...All the others only hear fart-noises when she sings...
This is incredible. The tremulous quality of her vocal is beautiful. It is really refreshing to hear a vocalist explore alternative, expressive subtleties in singing. Modern pop vocalists, even Adele, have struggled to not all sound like they were all trained in the same pop-star-factory-academy. So very lovely, Tiny Desk Concert finds these treasures.
i got so sad when it ended, like: "please just one more?" closing my eyes while listening to this felt like being in a lonely, abandoned village, and on the last track, like swimming through a cold dark ocean being hit with waves and thunder on all sides. i loved how the tremor of her vocals mixed with that of the guitar and with the heft of her piano chords. thanks, npr, for always handing me these mind-expanding gems, and thanks as well for your outstanding audio quality!
I think the whole "they look bored" thing is the point. They're trying to create a desolate and lonely soundscape. If you close your eyes you can imagine the music playing over a ghost town, at least that's what I got from it.
What a talent. Would love to see her live, and that band knows what they are doing. Great stuff. Layers of Joni, Joan, but no doubt, this is her unique voice. Love.
I absolutely fell in love with Holly and the band. Their face expressions were perfect and matched the music. Loved it. Loved it. Couldn't get enough of it. Thank you!
Please ignore all the negativity from people who don't do anything themselves. Your sound is original and terrific. Here's to continued success! Please play Austin City Limits festival in 2017!
Joni Mitchell, Lana Del Re, what else? I really like those long sweeping notes swaying you to other places. I think she's transporting herself there too, that might be why she looks vaguely distant. idk could be wrong.
Holly is great. Her voice breaks in key and this is traditional old school country. Not the auto tune pop of today;s modern country. Pull out your Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn and DOlly parton and then you will understand.
What's surprisin' to me is that she's not American, but does America's most cultured genre more justice than these country rock/pop artists. It seems too, that country is starting to climb up again with the likes of Sturghill Simpson and Margo Price. Lindi Ortega as well. Stay tuned, I guess...
This is so beautiful, can we please look past the fact that she's not smiling? Why does she need to smile anyway? Yodeling is pretty cool and I'm assuming it's a singing technique used on bluegrass/country/folk. As well as purposely going off on key. They remind me a lot of Fleetwood Mac and I really can't wait to hear more
It isn't that she isn't smiling, it is that she doesn't appear to be experiencing any emotion at all. If I Tab out and just listen it sounds great, but when I actually watch her perform she looks like she is reciting a grocery list or something and it really kills the energy of the song. If an artist can't get excited about their own music, why should I? It is the same reason I have been trying to get into My Bloody Valentine for 10 years but just can't get over the Shoegazing.
Perhaps it kills the energy of a live performance (for some people), but making assumptions about what emotions the performers are experiencing or not has to be the biggest energy-killer here right? They might be really anxious and just focusing. I try to always make a point to tab out. ;)
Felicitas Anijielo lol "yodeling is something they use on country folk" haha. It's the latest WMD. And how in the world do they remind you of fleet wood Mac other than having Stevie's hat
dear your album is magnificent , a joy to listen to , j adore la maniere dotn elle joue de sa voix et,musicalement tres bon , buy her album , it s worth it ...
Para mim, é uma benção o NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert existir, é um deleite para os meus ouvidos e para minha alma. Muito obrigada por isso Bob Boilen. ♥️
Can we get a Gogo Penguin Tiny Desk, or perhaps an Alfa Mist tiny desk? Maybe a Moonchild Tiny desk? Yussef Kamaal? The Holydrug Couple? Kaidi Tatham? Monophonics? Okay I'll shut up now.
Yeah, for sure. If you're into that sound definitely check out Laura Nyro if you haven't already, she slots just on the slightly more soul-oriented side of Carole King I think.
Th3Gr3mlinz I know it's been out for a while now, but for future reference, they post their videos on their website first, then upload it to UA-cam like a week later

Why does it frustrate you that other people don't have the same music interests as you lol

Sarah Vaughan did meet Hank Williams Sr. once, but she didn't recognize him under the sheet.

i couldn't agree more.
I'm actually in an abandoned ocean and that's how it sounds
@@MhadPheeGFYSit's true. I was the ocean

Shes one of the most beautiful girls to ever be made in human history. Plus shes purely talented
What a talent. Would love to see her live, and that band knows what they are doing. Great stuff. Layers of Joni, Joan, but no doubt, this is her unique voice. Love.

Very nice. Beautiful voice and thoroughly enjoyed the down-on-your-luck bluesy country sound.
Angelic and enchanting
Timeless, classic, talented.
Please ignore all the negativity from people who don't do anything themselves. Your sound is original and terrific. Here's to continued success! Please play Austin City Limits festival in 2017!
Thanks for chiming in with a bit of musical sanity.
Appreciate it.

Like most Tiny Desks, I stumbled into Holly and couldn't stop listening!!
unique voice i continued to listen even though i never heard of her

She’s actually from the Yorkshire Alps, so it’s more traditional yodeling ♥️

hooooo ouiiiiii !!!! quelle belle decourverte , super voix et facon de chanter , the album goes for meeeeeeeee

But wait, she's female. Aren't females required to smile at all times?
expecting and pressuring women to smile is a form of emotional labour
she is perfect
dear your album is magnificent , a joy to listen to , j adore la maniere dotn elle joue de sa voix et,musicalement tres bon , buy her album , it s worth it ...
What a voice break,a one and only
Nicole Kidman sounds terrific!
IS that Kidman's kid?
You mean southern Lana Del Rey?
Her acting experience helps a lot, she just pretends she's a country singer called "Holly" and the rest just falls into place.
Its Tracy Lords kid.
Her mum is Emily Druce, I went to school with her!
Mesmerizing
at 5 secs I was like 'country, no way' and then she started that falsetto or yodeling thing. Third song is the it, beautiful backing and gUitar riffs
Lovely Voice
Epitome of dreamy.
If the Cowboy Junkies came from Appalachia...very nice. I love the old-timey country style vocals.
Blondie perfected the "why am I here?" look back in the eighties.
Beautiful performance ❤️
Que hermosa voz por favor, te hace volar en todos los sentidos.
Her voice is intoxicating!
Stunningly beautiful ❤
Love her voice, Corner of My Mind was hauntingly beautiful. Also you have an uncanny resemblance to Nicole Kidman!
It's very tough to sing like she do! Hope you have a great career!
....... *** GREAT PERFORMANCE *** ...... !
this stuff is great, why all the hate?

Shes the best
whoa, this is really something else. Quite captivating.
Fantastic artwork - go on!
Well arranged
thank you
I don't think they were actually bored, i think they are trying to look like they are,but in the inside they were happy as fuck
She's amazing. She's telling stories, not prancing round a room like Beyonce. She's such a beautiful artist.
Can we get a Gogo Penguin Tiny Desk, or perhaps an Alfa Mist tiny desk? Maybe a Moonchild Tiny desk? Yussef Kamaal? The Holydrug Couple? Kaidi Tatham? Monophonics? Okay I'll shut up now.
Excellent
Holly shit that's/she's beautiful.
Thank you Lana for exposing me to Holly! Her singing and yodeling are much like those of Lana, too.
Reminds me of Joni Mitchell at times
More into the pop side like carole king. Amazing music eh?
Yeah, for sure. If you're into that sound definitely check out Laura Nyro if you haven't already, she slots just on the slightly more soul-oriented side of Carole King I think.

Really unique voice. Has some Iris DeMent in her.
well I woke up sunday morning with no way to hold my head...that didn't hurt

NPR.....quit fuckin around. Where's the Tiny Desk with Chano?!?! Been way more than a week since yall said you were gonna post it!
Th3Gr3mlinz I know it's been out for a while now, but for future reference, they post their videos on their website first, then upload it to UA-cam like a week later

Canta hermoso
It's good to see that Drake Bell is still around playing! didn't know he played bass
Spellbinding
Cool ^^
Have Miya Folick come on!!!!
WOW
I don't mean to be superficial....but...cool music!
Smiling doesn't win you gold medals!
I wish some of the critics below would grab their Gibson and do their own Tiny Desk concert. Not to say that they would probably never make it happen
So true haha
wow
I wanna sleep or die I don't know but she's beautiful the man on the keyboard wanna sleep too.... good night :)
What realms are you reaching with those angel like eyes?
Wow
Still waiting on chances
I just feel like we'd always argue about hats and whether or not they were really necessary indoors.
Have they had Middle kids??? I'd love to see that
2:11 looks like the dude is about to barf..
