Man alive Tim Larson is good at speaking in front of a camera! Great video. Thanks!
This really is excellent. I've watched many videos on fiber cement siding installation. This one is the most thorough in hitting all the points, even reiterates the important basic details not to miss. Those details are consistent with Hardie Plank siding documents. This guy really knows what he's doing and represents a company that specializes in siding installations.
Great no bs straight to the point info succinct and easy to follow. Thank you.
If you have a floating edge on a field joint that requires attention you can use a button sized blob of quadmax caulking on either side of the joint. Tape it down and remove the tape when you do the touch ups and other caulking. This guy knows his stuff. A note on windows, gap any trim as well, stick a backer rod in and caulk...or just caulk
Excellent vid, real details and technical advice and hints. Learn from guys that know what they're doing.
Its refreshing to witch a well produced video... Great command of the subject.
Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. It is very informative!
Your video have a of common sense and you are keeping it real thanks
Very nice tips. Thank you
Great job with this video
I will soon put Allura siding on my house, I know I will need to shim out some dips 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch. How much of a dip in the wall is acceptable, and still have a wall that looks straight?
Do you have an opinon on house wrap? Is Tyvec worth the extra expense vs a cheaper house wrap such as Rex Wrap by Warehouser?
Thank you for the good video
KC
Can you put this product over existing wood siding?
Great great video. Thanks for sharing. I learned a lot.
Hello. Thank you for the video. I know it’s almost a decade old but gave me great insight. My builder is KB and I have been fighting with them to fix some of this Allura siding. From what I has seen on this video and many others I have been watching, mine wasn’t installed correctly. Warranty is fighting with me. I’m trying to get this all fixed before my 1 year on this new build is up. It’s frustrating. I would like anyone’s help.
What are the horizontal framing tolerances for sheathing substrate in fraction of an inch over a stated distance? Just wondered how far out it can be between studs before you see wavy lap siding. Awesome video
I'm currently on my 2nd fiber cement job and this is my personal home. The first was a Home Depot in Kitty Hawk North Carolina that was loaded with aesthetic bling, the fiber cement being one and it was over metal studs. It came unpainted. My house however, I ordered painted finish color. You did not mention painting the cut ends that I saw, is this not needed with your product. I am using James Hardie for my home. I always research even after the fact to pick up new techniques or learn something new. Good video.
Cut ends are recommended to be primed after cutting and before installation. I saw a video yesterday where the installer also primed the bottom inch or two of the backs of the planks and the bottom edge in order to ensure against water infiltration. He did this before installing the planks. I've decided to follow this technique in the ~7'x24' wall I'm applying Hardie Planking right now.
So, with 6" out of the dirt and 2" above patios, roof decks, etc. What kind of flashing is preferred, aluminum or galvanized? Wasn't certain if the product could cause a problem with either.
I've sided several houses with both LP and Cement, I think they're both good products but proper installation is critical to get long lasting low maintenance results, proper nails, placement and watch that set depth. Don't skimp or skip when it comes flashing, quality caulking or paint!
My house was completed in 2001. We put Hardie plank around the dormers. The install meChanticleer ran thr planks down against the asphalt roof over the flashing. About 16 years later we found the Hardie plank disintegrating at the bottom plank against the roofing. We cut the plank along a line 2 inches above the roof surface and installed a 1x3 strip to cover the flashing and faulted the joint. The 1x3. Was plastic. PVC ? It appears to hold. Time will tell. Our local home builders had almost no experience with Hardie plank. One other warning....at the end of construction, a home in our community was finished except some painting at the eaves. The painter left an aluminum ladder against the house for the weekend. A thunderstorm, lightening struck a nearby pine, came down the tree and jumped to the ladder, burning thru a couple of rungs and setting the house on fire. The siding was Hardie plank. The house burned to to foundation
before the fire dept could arrive. Hardie plank and all. Anything will burn if the fire is hot enough. Don’t leave ladders against houses in thunderstorm months.
You answered a question I had about hardie board too close to asphalt shingles , that pvc should do the trick
This is an awesome video on hardie! Best one I seen on UA-cam!
Thanks for the great compliment Junior! allura gets mistaken for Hardie a lot, no worries its a compliment
Do you recommend ring shank or smooth nails? Also recommend roofing nails over siding nails? Typical 2x6 walls with 7/16 OSB.
Use stainless ring shanks. Get online to McFeely.com web site. They are a great source of speciality nails, screws and other hardware. I am a builder and been using them for 20 + years.
Nice video. I've installed both Allura and Hardie on homes in Southern Oregon and have noticed when cutting the Allura with mechanical shears, the Allura seems to have a bit less integrity (maybe it has more pulp and thus breaks apart more easily). Both products are well suited to our climate but I'm wondering about the differences in "acceptable" exposure time to rain prior to finding the time and the ideal conditions to paint it. Does anyone have experience with this? I'm about to buy siding for my new home on the coast but probably won't be able to paint it until the Spring so I'm concerned about that...
Is it possible to get a printed copy of these instructions?
May I ask where do you buy the top nail guide adjustment for the coil gun used
Great video wish i heard his voive while he nailed screwed or caulked an example.
This is the best video about Hardie plank installation I ever see thanks so much very helpful
Do y’all have a video on how to install allure fiberglass cement backer board
My gaps are all over the place. Tough to do 100% by myself.
What type flashing did you use on this video for the joint?
Ther are two ways to fix the joints one is to use the vertical plastic strips that are made for the Hardie Planks the other way and I never did this calk the joints.
great video! How do you fasten to ICF? Also do you use stepped trim to hide the end cut? Thanks
im about to do my house with allure.. best video on fiber cement siding..
@@timothylarson1472 10 out of 10.. no problems... dont waste money on 10 inch table saw blade.. you don't need it.. invest in expensive skill saw blade only... I got a deal on a pallet of smooth 6.25" for $1300
it is so beautiful
@@chriscraft77022 NICE! good advice for viewers Thanks!
I use a makita 7.25 slide miter for trims only generally or if I have a lot of small pieces. 99% I'm using my 7.25 worm drive and wearing a mask.
It’s been 2 years. Have you experienced any shrinking in the Allura siding?
It shrinks a tiny bit at butt joints but then returns to normal... no problems at all
I’m installing the full 4 x 8’ vertical panels. Do the butt together? If so how do I seal the seem?
Bottom seams can’t be caulked since they are sitting on 3/8 flashing and the butts on the side are going to be covered by a 1x3 trim
Does anyone know anything about the allure fiberglass backer board??
it does not have fiberglass as the reinforcement it premium pulp. call me for details 253 267 4388
hello. how mch anyone pieces? i will want buy fiber cement siding for sale in my shop but problem is me on mexico? the answer is if can you send me the product to Mexico? Thank you
whats the best nail gun to use ?
coil siding nailer or a roofing gun if you dont have foam or non structural sheathing!
Can you install it in the rain? I've heard it get messed up or soft! True?
Fiber cement only cures faster if it gets wet, the problem is its easy to overbend plank and soffit products, let it dry out and it will be better than new!
I do like the allura product better than Hardie. ...Hardie has a nailing strip which then dictates once it is cross cut, a factory left or right...allura has no nailing strip which allows you to flip it upside down and instal😀
I was waiting for the layout segment
I wish you had of actually done some of the areas you discussed as you were explaining them.
Please show backing installation.
We are working on allura tile backer videos, sorry for the inconvenience.
Please go to wwwallurausa.com for tile backer installation manual.
This guy looks like he knows what he's doing! How much for you to side my house?
So don't caulk butt joints but leave 1/8 gap at Windows? Where is that water going?
The butt joints have "moderate" contact, don't need caulking because of the coated metal flashing (10" wide and width of the product) behind the butt joint. The 1/8" gaps at trim, windows, etc. are to be caulked with the caulking recommended toward the end of the video.
its madden
So your saying I can use a roofing gun for the siding
1:45 I've used a roofing nail gun with 1-1/4 nails. No problems so far.
I am job fiber glass 12yeass
Didn’t Allura have a huge lawsuit just settled last month? The stuff shrinks. I’m amazed they’re still in business.
Hardie Plank also had lawsuits and Certainteed, so? Everyone is sued for something.
Show us as you narrate... thls is a video after all.
i did my entire house with clip nails with no problem.
rapunzel eh? - Time will tell. If there is a problem a warranty claim rejection is guaranteed.
The concern is not that the siding will fall off the wall under good conditions, but the ability of the siding to stay on the wall in strong winds. Check your local design criteria and use appropriate fasteners.
Here in Australia, we call that shit Hardie Plank during my building career I have installed that shit on hundreds of houses. It is referred to as a poor man's lining. And in most cases, we used fibro cutters to cut the shit.No dust at all.
Talk alot but don't show enough example. The are a lot of terms that normal dyi guys don't understand.
Thanks for the effort. Searching for other teacher
Allura customer service washes its hands of any obligation for its warranty. they simply tell me efflorescence and that isnt the case. VERY slow to respond, cant even bother sending paint. Spent over $10K in material and not even helping.
I wouldnt use them going forward.
I dont buy butt tape actually working, unless it has folded edges
Vinyl is FINAL..
and lighter! a great choice unless its exposed to high heat or you want a dark color.
And?....He's never put a single board in the video ... like a owners manual
Thanks for watching Ranger Boss! great feedback, we are adding content to show step by step!
Instead of talking, do a demo.
Please come to one of our allura Built To Last Tour events and its all install and answering your questions. Glory to the King!
I installed allura 4x8 panels.on new build. The product seems solid and will have longevity will see. But a pain in the butt. I will NEVER use that material again. I would rather use metal or wood or any other product. The allura panels are very difficult to install dont have much integrity when you cut and you have around 5 other steps to add on when using this product (paint the cut, add flashing, add multiple screws, not a one man job, breaks when you move it, dangerous to cut you must wear lung protection). never never again I would not recommend this to anyone.
... too much talk , too small worck
the guild of craftsmen learn from the presentation
show some demostration on how to install it not just talking..nonsense if you just talk..
You start by NOT using this company's shoddy material. Google Allura Class Action Lawsuit. This company does not stand by it's product. Criminals.
Google Hardie Plank lawsuit, Certainteed lawsuit....everyone is sued sooner or later.
@@docmccartha4073 But this company could not deserve it more. They truly are crooks and liars.
