Caitlin is soooo awesome. She and this channel got me through a really tough time of my life. I found her in early 2018 and then was diagnosed with brain cancer in October and my father died of metastatic lung cancer 2 weeks before Christmas. Caitlin's frank and candid talk about death helped me immensely to deal with the funeral industry in the wake of my father's death and I was able to make sure that his wishes that he not be mutilated or embalmed before cremation werefollowed. We shaved him in his death bed and sat with him all day talking to him and sharing stories. The only thing the funeral home did was to dress and wrap him for his viewing the next day. Never would had pulled that off without knowing what to say and ask per Caitlin. She also helped me be okay with the idea of my own mortality in the face of my cancer diagnosis. Long story short, she has saved my life! I love Caitlin now and forever!

Just want to say I loved this video. We recently cremated my father, when he passed away in September. He was the first member of my family to be cremated. It was simple and cost effective. Coming from a background of traditional "Christian" burials, We were leery about cremation at first, but it just seemed to fit our needs at the time and I know Dad would have loved the little memorial service we had. He & I used to watch Ask A Mortician videos together and they gave us a better understanding of the options we had. Thank you so much, Caitlin! If not for the work you've put into your channel, mine is one family that would've been far less prepared to deal with that loss. He got to experience the good death! ❤😢❤
I don't wish to be indelicate, but where did you choose to place your dear father's remains? I'm a senior and want to be cremated, but I don't have an idea where my cremated remains should be placed. The corpse has to look directly into the eyes of Medusa to be turned into stone. It’s relatively quick once you get the corpse to focus their eyes, but the waiting list would be too long for this to have been practical.
My younger brother died from a motorcycle accident in October. His ashes were divided among a number of small urns, which were passed around to everybody who was close to him. If you haven’t seen her other videos, she has one where she visits a black cemetery and to paraphrase “it’s sad that there had to be segregation but now the black cemetery tradition must be protected for all of the value it has for the community and ongoing tradition.” Basically the celebration of life vs the stanch and starchiness of a more “white” cemetery. You want your hair/ makeup done right so you have someone taking care of you who knows your skin/ hair type. You want your family to feel comfortable so you go to a black funeral home to then be transported to the grave sight of all your other relatives and have an accurate family history. Sorry if that sounded weird (I’m autistic so I phrase stuff weird) but yes she does a lot for the community and I’m ecstatic that she does.
@@AprilBytheBay One of Caitlin's outstanding traits is her respect for lives, and death traditions of people who don't look exactly like herself. She understands the innate humanity of taking care of the departed and the different roles families play in different cultures. That's pretty cool.

Yeah - I wonder if they actually had a method to do it (or at least a reasonable idea of how to do it), or if it was just a "what if we could, like, turn corpses into stone" kind of thing.
It's over faster? And I guess there's at least a slim chance someone will hear you screaming, whereas there's almost none if you're down in a hole with half a ton of dirt holding you down.
Probably a faster assurance of death? My grandmother had the same fear of being buried alive. Her solution? "Make sure they embalm me and embalm me good before they put me in the hole"!.
@@DrKlausTrophobie There is a non-zero chance of being buried alive. It has happened, it continues to happen, and will continue to happen. It's rare though, so the chances of being buried alive are very low. Embalming makes sure you're dead, but then again, so would cremation.
@@taylor3950 Right? I had all those same questions! And bathing being totally out? I don't see that being a situation a human could live long term. Nah, that's apearantly is "arson" and the elderly couple across my street didn't appreciate my helpful and we'll meaning initiative to help them to get a cheap cremation. I've been told that it is a "felony". 🙄
To be fair, the rural burial thing has been around since at least ancient Rome. The medical examination of corpses was not permitted inside city limits back then, for fear of vengeful spirits. Postmortem examination for the purposes of public health and physician training was conducted OUTSIDE of the city, as was burial.
and in Judaism burning the body is considered a desecration of the body, this custom carried over into Christianity and Islam, which I think explains the general aversion to cremation for such a long time
They also did not usually do autopsies because they considered the body as sacred and to do anything was considered desecration and the body was to be treated with reverence. In Islam and Judaism the dead are considered unclean and anyone handling them had to undergo purification rituals and the bodies had to be buried as soon as possible after death and not just because of the climate depending on where they were it was dictated by the legalisms of and requirements of their law laid down in scripture. People also for medical study also had to resort to grave robbing to learn about the human body, anatomy etc since it was not permitted to study or learn anything about the human body especially dead ones because everything was considered desecration and the body was supposed to be considered holy and sacred and to profane it was illegal and punishable.
@@lorriemiller6750 I was also thinking about how Roman physicians often became charons at the arena so that they could have access to bodies for study. They still had to cart the bodies out of city limits in order to work on them.
@@danielponder690 Yep. A friend of mine had an issue with that when her dad died. She was trying to get a burial at a Jewish cemetery for him, but older brother claimed the body and had it cremated against the wishes of the entire family and his synagogue.

I know this isn't really your area of expertise but would you be able to talk about other types of cremation like First Nations' and Hindu's? (I am Hindu so I get why we cremate our dead, but I think it is fascinating that other cultures also do it for a variety of other reasons)
Hello Varun, both my husband and I come from and live in Poland, where cremation is not very widespread, and by some even unacceptable. However, we do profess Krishna and cremation is the obvious choice for us. Regards🕉
@DL1982 Peters honestly cremation and aquamation seem like the coolest ways to dispose of bodies anyway. In Hinduism, we cremate the bodies as the fire will purify the souls, and we dump the ashes in the ganga river (aka ganges) as it is the holy river (also from my understanding Lord Ganga was cursed to have dead bodies floating in her... that was a wild ride of a story)
@DL1982 Peters Okay so bearing in mind that there are many variations in this story as well as I don't really remember it all (and lowkey don't want to look it up because it will send me down a rabbit hole), this is why we cremate the dead (also excuse my poor story telling. also I say Lord a lot, normally I wouldn't, but for consistency I will). So it all begins with Lord Parvati (One of the Mother Goddess Trinity, goddess of many things including fertility and strength, if you ever heard of Maha Kali/Kali, this is another form of her) wanted a child, so she and her husband Lord Shiva (part of the male trinity, god of many things including destruction and dance, considered the "end" of the cycle) prepared to create one. This involved combining their energies to create a child. While this occurred, other gods/demigods were worried that demons would try and steal this energy for their own usage. In order to protect it, Lord Agni (god of fire) took the energy and went away to keep this safe. This angered Lord Parvati, who didn't know that they were trying to protect the soon to be child, cursed him to burn down everything that surrounds him. Worried about this, he decides to pass off the energy to Lord Ganga, (Goddess of the Ganga river/Holy river/Ganges). Since she is so pure, she was able to hold onto the energy without it harming her. Again, Lord Parvati not knowing the full story, gets upset. Now some quick backstory, Lord Ganga was initially in heaven, and when she went to earth, Lord Shiva 'caught' her on his head and trapped part of her in his hair in order to protect the earth. So Lord Parvati not being rational, believe that Lord Ganga is both trying to steal her child and also her husband in some weird sense, and curses her to be littered with dead bodies. This makes Lord Ganga lose her purity, and she isn't able to hold onto the energy, so instead she drops it into the earth, so that Mother Earth Lord Prithvi (Goddess of the earth, some sects consider her an avatar of Lord Lakshmi, another one of the Mother Goddess Trinity, goddess of many things like fortune) could 'give birth' to the child. While the energy drops it shatters into 6 pieces, and results in the formation of 6 babies. There, 6 nymphs (not the proper word but I can't remember what they are and I don't speak hindi/sanskrit) each take a baby as their own. By this point, Lord Parvati had calmed down, and went to get her children, however the nymphs say no as they picked them up. She says that she has a right to them, but they also claim that they have the right to them. Then Lord Ganga and Lord Prithvi come and claim that since lord Ganga carried him and Lord Prithvi 'Birthed' him, they should get the child. Lord Shiva arrives and suggests that they split the 6 babies into 9 babies, but the nymphs mention how they couldn't bear to part with even a part of their child, to which lord Shiva reminds them that it is his and Lord Parvati's child. They understand, and the 6 babies fuse into 1 (Lord Ganga and Lord Pithvi didn't actually want the child, they were just trying to prove a point to the nymphs). Then Lord Shiva lets the Nymphs take care of the child until he grows older which makes Lord Parvati upset (I don't remember why he did this) but she accepts it. Lord Shiva acknowledges that Lord Agni and Lord Ganga took the child away to protect him, but while he can't remove the curse, he grants them boons instead. He grants Lord Agni the boon that although he will burn everything, everything that he burns will be come pure. So when we burn dead bodies, they are purified. He grants Lord Ganga a boon that by bathing in a specific lake once a year as a black cow, she would always remain pure despite being filled with the dead. That is why we put the ashes in the Ganga river, as it will be filled with dead bodies but always stay pure. Well this is the story to my knowledge, I could be completely wrong, but this is what I remember learning.

To be fair, the rural burial thing has been around since at least ancient Rome. The medical examination of corpses was not permitted inside city limits back then, for fear of vengeful spirits. Postmortem examination for the purposes of public health and physician training was conducted OUTSIDE of the city, as was burial.
and in Judaism burning the body is considered a desecration of the body, this custom carried over into Christianity and Islam, which I think explains the general aversion to cremation for such a long time
I thought they buried bodies outside cities purely to protect the groundwater

Hello Varun, both my husband and I come from and live in Poland, where cremation is not very widespread, and by some even unacceptable. However, we do profess Krishna and cremation is the obvious choice for us. Regards🕉
I'd be interested in this too!
@DL1982 Peters No worries, I'm glad it was interesting.
That was the best ad for Great Courses Plus I've ever seen.

Oh well."

I love your voice changes, one of the best teachers I had growing up used to teach in the same manner and style you have explaining things, I just went to my 45 class reunion this year, and I still remember things that teacher taught me. Don't change your approach, I love your presentations!
Honestly I wouldn’t have been too shocked if cocaine was involved in the cremation
@Make Me Believe I meant mixed into the ashes :/
"... Slathered the body in herbs and spices...."
Anyone else think of Colonel Sanders at that point?
Just remember, when a body is cremated, there is a certain point where it is cooked perfectly!
Sounds fucking delicious tbh
No, no... It's just the way it's cooked!
.... Err, I mean cremated...
Then she brings out the chicken in the end of the video😂🐔
Mmmmm! I love KFC (Kentucky Fried Corpse)!!!
I associate you with death and death mythologies so much that I thought you were rowing a boat like Charon, instead of churning butter! 🤣
Same!! She’d do well at that I think

@@scarfacefan19 You too!!
@@natashak8281 thank you!
Just a fun fact: it's actually really common for powerful women to speak in a deeper register because it helps men take them seriously. Sometimes it's intentional, sometimes not. Hillary Clinton worked with vocal coaches to change her voice to a higher register when her husband was first running for office and then back to a lower register when she entered politics.
Those names be like the Gravity Falls TV gag:
*"Stay tuned for the Friday night movie, 'The Duchess Approves' starring Stirly Stembleburgiss as 'The Duchess' and Crampton St. Rumpterfrabble as a rascal, coxswain 'Saunterblugget Hampterfuppinshire'."*
Lol, just watched that episode yesterday!
I see Caitlin Doughty, I click like.
Likewise - pun intended lol!
Thank you for covering this!! The LeMoyne Crematory is about half a mile from where I live. I was born and raised in Washington, PA, and I've visited the LeMoyne House (the doctor's family home) which is now a museum. Our little city is full of history, so I'm thrilled to see you tell this story!
"I'm churning butter..."
I thought you were piloting a river boat.
I thought that too.
Same 🤣
Why not both
I thought she might have been stirring her witch's cauldron. You know, Halloween and all...
Wow everybody here has such a clean mind
These videos are so damn good! I stumbled across my first one maybe a week ago, and have been hooked. Incredible quality, perfect presentation, and just the right amount of humor.
