  • Action at East Croydon during a short visit on a Sunday morning. Engineering work on the Southeastern Main Line between Orpington and Tonbridge saw the Hastings service once agin diverted via the original SER route to London via Redhill. Also, the Thameslink Core was closed so these services were starting from London Bridge.
This was an opportunity to look at the arrangements at the station. There are ambitious proposals for remodelling which will add two more platform faces. Whether this happens or not is not yet decided.
In previous videos published over the last year I have visited the next station south, South Croydon and Selhurst, Norwood Junction and Windmill Bridge Junction. You may enjoy revisiting these to give a complete view of the area at this time.

I try to publish something every Friday. Due to the lockdowns there isn't much new material like this one so I have been doing a lot of compilations. Hopefully I'll get out and about a bit more in the next few weeks. My back catalogue is all available on the channel.

Wish I'd known you were going there; I could have got you to try for a shot of my Gran's old house at 56 Oval Road, which should still be visible from the north end of Platforms 4 or 6. You can imagine the view I had from her front bedroom window as a small child in the 1950s!

Just checked it out on Google Earth. Must have been spectacular. Mainly obstructed by high buildings now.

Could Southeastern operate some of their services including Tonbridge from London Victoria and going via East Croydon. With Southern providing their usual services from London Victoria to Brighton, Littlehampton, Three Bridges, Crawley, Bognor Regis and other services they operate which serves East Croydon. As well as Thameslink.
Plus I think that Southern should replace the Class 455 and Class 313 if they are planning ahead to replace them with new rolling stocks. And maybe could inherit the Class 387/3s from c2c to be used on the suburban services to add more extra capacity on their services.

I was looking at the plans for the remodeling, Windmill Bridge will be replaced & a whole swathe of housing & business units will be demolished beyond it, but as you mentioned it is not funded yet!

I had a look at the historical image on Google Earth. The 1945 track layout looks significantly different.

@@BoogiesTrains I think the current layout of the Selhurst triangle dates from the early 80s, some attempt was made to grade seperate some of the lines but obviously not up to scratch for today's traffic frequencies.

I'd like to see you get into the Midlands more and do some videos at stations such as Sheffield, Doncaster, Nottingham etc. You could maybe do something similar to what you did for your video at Peterborough. However, I do understand if it's not possible as distance and pricing could make it quite difficult.

It would be nice to go a bit further afield. I doubt I will be making any specific spotting trips beyond the M25 for some time. On the other hand, visits to family and holidays sometimes give me the opportunity to spend some time trackside.

Great video. Are the engineering works SE diverts always on a Sunday. Or are they sometimes Saturday midweek

    • @theoalbert8915
      @theoalbert8915 3 роки тому +2

Due to severe capacity issues of running Southeastern trains via Redhill on Saturday they tend to be on Sunday only. But I'm pretty sure they have happened on a Saturday in the past, so they do happen, just very rare.

One way or another the Hastings line has more than its share of diversions. There has been a lot of work on the Southeastern main line and the Hastings line during the past year. I have captured diverted trains at Norwood Junction, Beckenham Junction, New Beckanham, Lewisham, Nunhead, St Mary Cray Junction, Petts Wood and Chislehurst during that time. The videos are on this channel. Any closure of the normal route south of Sevenoaks means that the diversion must be via Redhill or Ashford. Via Ashford includes an unelectrified section so is a non starter. Closures north of Sevenoaks can be dealt with by a number of variations including diversion to a different terminus.

Network Rail are planning to do remodeling Croydon and Unblock the Croydon bottleneck. I think that the works will begin in 2022.

    • @BoogiesTrains

I wasn't aware that it was funded yet. The railway will be in for a difficult time financially for the next few years. Demand is predicted to return to only 80% of pre-pandemic levels so a lot of capacity enhancement projects will be difficult to justify in the medium term.

Are those drink cans at 5:35 at each door? What are those for?

What a wonderful observation. It's an optical illusion. Each door has a thing at the bottom in the centre. I think its probably something to do with detecting that the doors are properly closed

@@BoogiesTrains I notice the class 317 have it, but only the ones that don't have the round roof, The ones with the squarer design same as the class 456.
The other "PEP" trains don't have this

Awesome. Windmill Junction is one of my favourite junctions in the whole world, besides Stewart's Lane area, and Harold Interlocking in Queens, New York City. Just pure excitement ! What is the gap between tracks 2 and 3 for ? Was it an old steam locomotive turnaround ?

I have no idea about the old station layout. The platforms have been extended over the years to the current 12 car length. Previously there might have been a through road for non stop or freight trains. Perhaps someone else will see this comment and be able to clarify.

I had a look at Harold Yard on Google Earth. Wow. I've never been further east than the Brooklyn end of the bridge. I have seen the freight yards between Hoboken and Newark. They were quite impressive. Watched a double stack container train leaving whilst on a Hudson Tube train once. NSX if I remember correctly.

@@BoogiesTrains It's called Sunnyside Yard, and it was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad circa 1910. It's in Queens, New York City. This was when they built two tunnels under the Hudson River, and four tunnels under the East River once electrification was done. ABC News said that the East Side Access for LIRR trains to go into Grand Central Station is finally built, and due for a year of testing and safety. Harold Interlocking and flying junction is the busiest commuter train junction in the U.S. For subway/underground rapid trainsit, the Loop in Chicago has the busiest Junction, with more per hour than the Harold. I read the Wikipedia article about the original Penn station today. Fascinating. Pity that it was demolished.
I attended a conference in Jersey City a few years ago. One evening I took the Hudson Tube to Manhattan and then a train from Penn station to Secaucus Junction. I changed there for a train back to Hoboken. I know how to have fun. Unfortunately this was before I was making videos so I only have a few stills.
