On Resolution against Emergency, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated that the Parliament session did not start on a right note and added, "It has been a rather dramatic start to the session because you had all Opposition leaders standing up and saying that they hope that the Speaker would conduct the House in a manner that is fair to all."

Emergency issue raised by the Speaker may have been an act to instigate the opposition to create a ruckus and them blame them of misbehavior. Actually if he was impartial he should have raised burning issue of Manipur and what action the Government proposes to take.

The right way to have spun it would have been to thank the Speaker for warning the Government that they are heading down the same disastrous path as was done 49 years, and that the warning so urgently needed that the Speaker had to issue it at the very outset.

Lakhs of people including leaders of opposions like Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Lal krishna Advaani and many more were arrested and sent to prison.
Emergency is possible only after the discussion with cabinet ministers , but no cabinet members were asked about that

Those who call today's day and age as a dictatorship, please go read of the emergency. Every opposition leader was jailed without credible charges and did not even have legal access and constitutional remedies. Thats not an exaggeration when every leader was arrested. Those like Rajnath Singh, Arun Jaitley, Siddaramiah, MK Stalin, Venkiah Naidu who were student leaders back then and only in recent times occupied high positions were locked up. Such was the extent of the operation. Every political opponent like Desai, JP, Vajpayee , Advani, Fernandez, Joshi, Basu, and a host of other names were jailed under what? MISA which was Maintenance of Internal Security Act as PM found all of them to be a "National Threat". MISA, forced sterlization, shutting electricity to media houses, shutting down of courts for 2 years, using article 356 to dismiss state govt as it pleased were a normal during that time.
Today Arvind Kejriwal is able to walk out of jail to campaign for election. That time Rajnath Singh was a student leader then (now Defence Minister) was unable to get parole to do the last rights for his mother.

It is quite correct for the Speaker to raise the issue of the Emergency as it's the 50tj anniversary of the event. This has nothing to do with confrontation with the Opposition. If the Opposition didn't like this, then they are in denial mode.
