I don't do any martial arts, nor have I any intention to, but I think the way you simplify things so that anyone can understand is a brilliant lesson that anybody teaching anything should do. People learn much easier if they understand why something is the right or wrong way, than if they don't. Top marks.
I came to this video to understand one thing that I came across accidentally, while searching for something else, but I was interested in knowing, just for the pleasure of learning, and I learnt much more than just that one thing and found it very interesting throughout. I have never been, in any way, interested in any martial art, even to the extent of refusing to watch films about any of it, but you really captured and held my attention. Kudos!

I remember one explanation/practice we had for proper grip was to have a 'wringing' motion. Before practice, we were made to wipe the floor (pushing down cloth and running along the length of the practice area), then I remember being told/reminded to wring the cloth in the bucket 'properly' and use/remember that motion when holding the shinai.
Even then, there was emphasis on the strength being on the ring and little fingers.
    Cool and informative video. :)
I haven't really practiced kendo in a long time (well, I still do some of the drills, but I'm no longer in a club), but it's nice to watch these and recall the basics.

Back in old days, it was not wringing the cloth but chakin (linen cloth of tea ceremony). This teaching disappeared because no one knows chakin anymore.

Alternate explanation for that kind of kendo grip: As Imafuji-sensei stated, the hammer grip means your hands are tense. Tense muscles lead to slower strikes. Slower strikes mean your strikes are much less powerful.

Thank you for this amazing video, I’ve really wanted to get into kendo for a while. Your video confirmed my passion to start practicing. I had one question, I am very aware that my shoulders are not fully relaxed and can feel the tension build up. What would you recommend besides stretching to start to ease off of the trapezius muscles and have correct form?

Thank you for your kind words! It means a lot to hear that my video has inspired you to pursue kendo. If you focus on striking, you will get tense. So concentrate on breathing. The striking movement is easy. You lift the sword up and bring it down. Do it in front of a mirror. Observe your form. Good luck!

Thank you for your question, Hiềnanh Phùng!😀
Bokuto is good! You can learn the proper placement of your hands. But from here you get a bokuto is very important. You should not get the cheapest you can find on the internet. Or you don't need a very expensive one.
The same question was asked before: www.kendo-guide.com/can-i-start-training-kendo-with-a-bokken-instead-of-a-shinai.html
I have tons of videos here but also have more info at kendo-guide.com. Hope you get a lot of info you need! 😀👍

Thank you for all your hard work. Around the 4 minute mark you teach about how to hold the sword and shinai in left hand, but why is the bokotou held in the right hand, please?

    • @KendoGuide

Thank you for your question. Basically, when you don't have an intention to draw out (use) your katana, you should carry it in your right hand. In kendo, many things are simplified or changed for convenience. So it is OK to carry your shinai (bamboo sword) in your right hand. But during training in kendo, you know you use shinai all the time so you carry your shinai in your left hand. Now, this is my personal view since I haven't found any writing instructions why we carry the shinai in our left hand. Hope this helps!
