    A quick question I think the one I got is a Sarracenia flava cuprea, the top hood is a little red but it sparkles on the top like its bin through a morning mist but its bin dry for two months is this normal for them to sparkle, all the other flavas I have don't have this sparkle on them, why does this one glisten in the sun light?

    • @succulentflytraps
      @succulentflytraps  Рік тому

      It sounds like the plant you're referring to is secreting a bit more nectar around the edges of the hoods. In the sunlight ithe nectar secretion reflects sunlight giving the appearance of a sparkling pitcher ......its completely normal.

      @@succulentflytraps That's the interesting part, This sparkle texture on this plant its not sticky, no distinct oil textures on the leafs hood or lips and its all over the leaf, not just the top of the hood or lips but on the back and sides as well but stops at the stem, I'll try to check with the seller, all they told me was it was a hybrid flava but didn't know what type it was? I don't know if this normal for flavas but it also produces two different flowers, one large yellow flower above the leafs and a red one that grows on the same level as the leafs that drools nectar like its leaking out of the flower?

    I live in the Southeastern United States, right where these plants are supposed to be native to, but I can’t recall ever seeing any out in the wild. I’ll keep looking for sure though.

      You are so blessed! It has to be one of my 'to do' things .....seeing Sarracenia out in the wild. They arw really are a commanding presence (at least in my nursery) with their large ,beautiful colourful pitchers . When you do go and see them don't forget to email me your some pics ......I'd LOVE to see them!

      Succulent Flytraps , I sure will! I go kayaking, so that’s the best chance I think I have of finding some. It just requires caution around here, because the wildlife will take a bite out of you if you aren’t mindful lol. I get a lot of people walking around my neighborhood, so I set up a display of S. Leucophylla around my mailbox. I enjoy explaining to my neighbors what those particular plants are and what they do. Everyone so far has found them to be quite fascinating.

      I live in Alabama & have had the joy of seeing Sarracenia in the wild. The Splinter Hill Bog is an amazing place to visit in late August! The S leucophylla there are simply stunning! I raise various carnivorous plants, they have been a fascination since childhood. Happy hunting!

    I bought a couple small plants recently, rhizomes in 2” pots. Obviously it depends on a lot of things, but should I be expecting a full plant by fall or will it probably take a couple years before I really have something impressive?

    • @succulentflytraps
      @succulentflytraps  3 роки тому +2

      Hi there. You are absolutely right in saying that it depends on a number of factors. I normally vegetatively propagate my plants (divide them) so the plants are already mature when they're divided and repotted. This is unlike seedlings which need time to fully develop. However I do have Sarracenia seedlings which resulted from my cross pollination project. They are about 18 months old and have plenty of growing to do! So on this basis yes they will take years to fully develop. Hope this helps.

    I seen some cobwebs on your flavas, do you remove those spiderwebs? I heard spiders will compete with carnivorous plants for food.

    • @succulentflytraps
      @succulentflytraps  3 роки тому +2

      Hi there .... I tend to leave the webs where they are. I can tolerate one trap on one plant being covered in web. However I will break up the webs around the mouths of the pitchers if multiple traps are covered. You are right in saying the spiders compete for food. I have a wooden bamboo skewer handy which I use to break up the webs. In certain cases I use the skewer to remove the spiders if they 'don't get the message'. Of course I treat the spiders with the utmost respect and safely relocate them somewhere else in my garden. I like to think of my plants as being part of a mini ecosystem and spiders become part of that ecosystem along with dragon flies which intercept insects attracted to my plants. Happy growing to you!
