What's even more impressive is that Desmond Doss was only 5'4" tall... Andrew Garfield is 5'10"... subtract half a foot and even more muscle -- some say Doss barely broke 100 lbs. or so, yet he dragged 75 men to the edge and lowered them down one at a time. Doss himself in an interview said of that quote in real life that if he got nothing else but that smile, then he had been adequately repaid for his efforts.
Another fun fact: He did carried men out of the battlefield with his arm broken. Which was never seen here due to the fact it made it unbelievable thus was not seen.

Imagine how scared those men were thinking that no one was coming and that they were just going to lay there for hours or until they died that’s 75 men who would’ve passed if not for 1 man
It is said that the actual number of people he saved could be up to 100 men. Because the army said he saved 100 men but Doss didn't want to take credit for all 100 men that were saved. He only wanted to take credit for saving 50 men. So they agreed to put 75 men on the records instead (the middle ground).

The ridge wasn't on a beach and was narrow and thin. It was fire swept. The lower ridge between two others. and not very high either. The movie does a horrible job showing that. Just horrible. The men at the bottom could well be playing cards or writing letters home, for the help they gave. I'm talking about the movie not the actual marines involved. not the actual battle. I believe it is because it implies a belief in god, which while fine on its own, can be off putting to religious minorities currently in service who either don’t believe in the Abrahamic god, or don’t believe in gods at all. It could also just be that there is no NATO Medic corp as most medics are part of individual squads/platoons rather than a dedicated medic group. I could see it being a motto for field hospitals, but those typically employ civilian medical personnel conscripted into emergency medical service behind the front line.
@@lionblaze5387 could be how you perceive it. If you cut out the please lord part and kept it as, let me get one more I think that would help with the religious side of it. And yes, you are correct in that there is no nato medic Corp.
@@lionblaze5387 Imma be honest with u. If I'm a medic weather it's war time or even just helping people this will still be my mantra. Just so I could save one more.
0:45 - 1:05 I love seeing this part come to life 'cause of hearing Desmond himself describing it in the credits/interviews; "Blood had run down into the fella's face and eyes. He was layin' there just groaning calling' for a medic. I took water from my canteen and got some bandage, and I washed his face... and when I... was washing his eyes, his eyes came open and. Man, he just lit up. He says 'I thought I was blind.' And if I hadn't got anything more out of the war than that smile he gave me, I'd have been well repaid."
"Help me get one more..." God: "You got it, Son." 50 rescues later... "Please Lord...help me get one...more..." God: "Though works alone do not save a man, this one inspires my very Angels."
My great-grandmother was a war medic in Red Army. She went through Poland and finished the war near Berlin. I am a med student now myself. This film - even this scene in particular - resonated with me the most. I remember my grandma stories how she, a head surgeon of her field hospital, was the last one to leave it when Germans started bombarding them and how her best friend (also a doctor in the same hospital) was almost blinded by the shell explosion. Soliders make the war go - but never forget all those brave men and women who made sure they could come back alive
The way the film ends: Doss deflects 2 grenades and is lowered to safety. The way it actually ended: Doss gives his place on the stretcher to another and gets shot in the arm, fracturing it. Stranded for 5 hours, Doss would then crawl 300 yards (3 football fields) to safety. With a shattered leg. And a fractured arm. No, they don't make them like him anymore. But really, they never made them like him before Desmond Doss either.
@@fall3166 Sure they still make them like that you guy's. You've seen footage from Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Syria, and on and on. Well said. Currently, people see being religious as being ignorant. That isn't so. You can have faith in God or a higher power, but still learn and grow.
“So do not fear for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” -Isaiah 41:10
Pvt. Doss was always humble about his service and actions. He chalked up his actions to his faith and his God. When called a Hero he would always shake his head and say, "The real Heroes are buried over there."
Yeah, he sure could have used a little help up there. Maybe one of those marines at the bottom should have shown a little more concern for their buddies.. Perhaps an officer might have ordered someone to help... Just a thought.

As a Christian Doss to me is an example of how miracles still do happen, they may not be bright and flashy with a chorus singing on but in reality it's the actions of one single man doing his hardest
I mean, as an ex Christian, this seems like an example to me of how even totally non-supernatural, perfectly explained events that come about as a result of incredible human willpower get attributed to the work of a magic man in the sky. I do appreciate the sentiment though to a certain extent; good really is out there, and it’s often found in the hearts of individuals trying their best to make a difference

Everytime I think he was at his limit and was ready to give up, he just kept going

I watched this movie as a little kid, and that phrase “Please God, help me get one more.” Has always stuck with me. It’s a very important phrase that I’ve always remembered and valued up to this day.
Kinda reminds me of the ANZAC beliefs and way of practice in World War 1, World War 2 with the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea where the troops halted the Japanese advanced and made them retreat, and in the Vietnam War. Out of all three of these wars, the ANZAC troops have one of the highest rates of soldiers that returned home (they died but their comrades didn’t leave them)and survived compared to any other country. This is because of the ANZAC’s characteristic high moral, strong sense of determination and mateship, and we’re firm believers in “No Man Left Behind”.

Sure, let's pretend god wanted him to save people, but still decided he'd be hit by a grenade and wounded. Really the actions of a god who wanted him to save people. Why not leave him unscathed if your god wanted him to save people? Why not have these people NOT BE hit in the first place? Isn't your god supposed to be all powerful? Isn't everything going according to his will? It's so inconsistent. Try logic dude.

THAT DAY A MOUNTAIN WAS MOVED!
The real story is even more unbelievable than the movie. If you watch the documentary "The Conscientious Objector" all those people that he single-handly rescued, were rescued in broad daylight on an open battlefield with little to no cover. His army buddies that were there said they couldn't believe their eyes. They said the bullets, mortars, grenades and artillery shells (steel rain they called it) were flying all around him while he was rescuing his comrades. IMHO The documentary is so much better than the movie and is a must watch.

But at *this scene* everyone one of us _grown men,_ including the whole theatre, were *extremely quiet* & secretly trying to hide our faces from one another because we were all either _in tears or had tears in our eyes._ This is a 100% true story. We were not expecting this film to be this powerful at all. *I bought it on Blu-ray the day it was released.*

You see the reality is far from what the movie depicts.. The ridge wasn't on a beach and was narrow and thin. It was fire swept. The lower ridge between two others. and not very high either. Because NATO is a terrible organization if you care about human rights.
Your daily dose of cynicism for today.
But this war man-made and we should never ever forget that. I'll take all the 'weak and pathetic' people if it means preventing another war like this.
Weaker and pathetic. No. We grown smarter and less racist and more caring. If thats all you've seen of this "generataion" Then you have scraped the surface. Or then im sorry for your country if thats literately all there is.
kilduff this generation is literally garbage compared to the greatest generation. I’m a millennial and we Fucken suck. Like to complain about everything, blame everyone for everything, self entitled, actually more racist for blaming the white man and personal responsibility is no longer the norm
captain america: i can do this all day
Desmon Doss: I can do this all day and night.
This man is a war hero a true believer and a person with a heart he helped so many wounded men sacrifice himself to save others rest in peace. 🕊️
❤
His kids have no reason to not go to school,
Kid: dad I’m sick
Doss: I HAD TO CRAWL THROUGH DIRT AND BLOOD IN THE DARK
I think he would've let his son off school if he was off with a stomach bug
... with a fractured arm! And a broken leg! Go to school!
I SAVED 75 LIVES!
lol true 😂
HIS HANDS ARE ALL BLODDY BUT HE KEEPS GOING, WITHOUT ONE BULLET TO DEFEND HIM. A GREAT HERO
I'm alittle late but it wasn't shown in the movie. His hands weren't bloody but we're to the point where you could see the bone!
worse not bloody but burnt to a crisp from rope burn he had to be in agony unless he gave himself a touch of that morphine
"i thought i was blind" this is such a great movie it deserves A MILLION OSCARS
In school in 6th grade I had to do an enormous essay and presentation about someone that I look up to that this is the man that I chose♥️ he is a true hero
Till this day this scene is edge into my heart and soul. Still i often would come back to watch this as a reminder. And still it gives me the goosebumps
if you didnt cry watching this movie, youre lying or have no tear ducts
Edwin Cheung some people don't cry cuz they don't understand the feels but others also don't because, their emotions are stuck inside of them and there is no need to express it out of yourself, personally I haven't watched this movie but I've seen the carnage of the assault of the Japanese till the end and only that makes me wanna buy the movie or wait and see it in TV once I find it
I saw this Movie yesterday, but I didn't cry, because I am the kind of man who does not cry.
But if you ask me if my Life view changed after this Movie, then I tell you, never leave a man behind.
Damn, I was saying all the time "C'mon Doss, thats enough, you've done well!" But, no, he gets Another one. I Believe him to be crazy, but I allways say, you have to be crazy to do crazy things and win the day!
movienaut don't lie, you cried, we all did
What got me is that scene where he rejoind his group and when he was walking (Being Carried) Among the soldiers and they were looking at him like "Fuck me... Real life Hero"
I didn't cry. But I cried to click and warrior. I rarely cry to movies tho.
When your'e Doing the "No kill Challenge" but still have to carry your team
The BlackCat
and succeed
I actually want to make the Desmond Doss challenge in BF1. I am usually the support of the group, or the gadget guy/technician/engineer. So i want to see how many players will i be able to help in a single game of conquest.
Maybe then ARMA? There is more complicated system for saving lives there.
Remember guys, you have to do all that without dying, to unlock the Desmond Doss achievement.
there's clips of some peeps doing that in battlefield; a ton of deaths, no kills, top of the leaderboard
@Koruuu that would be me in battlefield 5 after watching hacksaw ridge
It still amazes me that the real Desmond Doss did this with multiple severe injuries, aching muscles, extreme exhaustion, and no weapon or backup. Even helping the wounded Japanese soldiers. His story is one of my favorites to hear from WW2. It takes a lot to be someone like this.
Currently in a college test week right now. The quote, "Please lord, help me get one more." Is ringing throughout my mind over and over again.
What a fucking awesome scene. The soundtrack is badass too.
Can't believe the composer did those Adam Sandler movies
Did you know that?
Kyle Campbell I did not lol. At least he's getting better work now.
Average Joe don't u here the word lord don't say the f word
Yeah i agree......and the last 1 min music makes me cry..... I didn't find these in the soundtrack....😭
God is smiling at this man with open arms to heaven. This man didn't kill a single man on the battlefield, saved sooooo many life's with holes in his hands while under enemy fire, even went the distance in saving a few jappense soldier all under gods name. Bless this guy we need soooooo much more people like him!!
that moment of happness doss expresses when he helps the man see again is so pure, he genuinely felt joy from being able to help put apart one of his fallen comrades
I’m EXTREMELY pro gun, however Doss showed without a weapon and full of faith proved to be a full blown hero. Much love and respect for this man showing us the almighty is STILL in control.
SAme here with being Pro-gun. however you pointed out that you don't need to carry a gun or weapon to serve and save lives. He knew war was necessary but killing was not hence why he became a medic when he joined. He also paved the way for another un armed combat that served as a medic that was rewarded The Medal of Honor,
That's right my friend simply have faith in our Lord God in heaven and he will protect you. ✝️🙏
His faith was his weapon
Why did the almighty allow the war to happen? why didn't Doss ask for the war to end? Was that too much to ask for?
You're all mental
Because of this movie, whenever I'm at the gym and I am at my limit, I pray to god "Please lord, help me do one more rep." I don't do that as a joke. I do it because I seriously believe the lord gave Desmond the strenght to help those men.
he did give him the strength
Chuck Lee amen and I should pray more especially at the gym to because I'll enlist in the Navy in 2 years. The strength of God will guide and help me pass Navy bootcamp
Reps for Jesus
Not sure that's the same thing bro.
Stop believing things from nothing. Use your brain ffs
Andrew Garfield should of won the Academy Award for this role he played.
He deserved double nomination: for Hacksaw and Silence!!!
Did he win ?
He did for brave heart
Not really. His performance was fine but the character was nothing special due to the lackluster writing
I am pretty old and I think this is one of the greatest stories ever told. Edit: And it was very well acted out. Congrats to all involved.
Desmond doss is a true hero
Edit: oh my gawd 2k like
Superman and dussmond doss which you want a hero?
Superman:FU©|{ ALL BUILDING AND CITY,to totally useless except terrorist
Dussmond Doss:Help people,revive people,Have mercy
he is my hero
+Arif Cso shut the fuck up.
+Benton Xavier dude, you need help.
Luke Dearey and whys that?
This movie has less carnage than Saving Private Ryan
But has a much stronger message
Nah they were both brutal!
debatable, I think this had more blood. Plus the graphics are way better
Nathan Monteiro Well from a comparison of 2016 movie to a 1998 movie, of course the graphics will be better
Graphics.... what is this games? haha
But The Movie Is Heroic, No Matter What Andrew Did Fabulous
If you don't tear up watching this...
Thinking about the Love...
This man had for his fellow humans...
You're beyond help.
He didn't even had to kill anyone to be this much of a badass much respect
I don't have much time for Mel Gibson personally, but watching this film in the cinema, I found myself wondering what I would do in this situation and if I could achieve what Doss did. It absolutely shook me to the core, and still does. No wonder it got a ten-minute standing ovation at Cannes.
To me this man(not Gibson) is the definition of a hero.
"True courage is not knowing when to take a life, but when it spare it."
-Gandalf the grey.
Nothing but absolute respect for this hero. And to think the movie cut content because of how unbelievable it would be speaks volumes of his character and determination to save the lives of his brothers at great risk to his own. A true legend and hero.
this scene is a masterpiece
it changed my life a lot
sometimes when i get bored from working or get very tired i tell god the same words he said
'god help me get one more '
I cried on this scene like a kid ... outstanding acting and superb scene
I love how in the end of the movie, they put the Desmond doss interview explaining all the quotes that were in the movie.
It blows my mind that Casey Affleck got the Oscar over Andrew Garfield.
Yeah am very pissed for that andrew garfield deserved an oscar for his performance in this movie
Yeah. I’m convinced that any accurate portrayal of history and the critics automatically dismiss it.
@@smoketinytom absolutely agree with you!
Did you watch Manchester by the sea?
@@thecrockpotmaster214 Hacksaw Ridge was an insane production but Casey's acting in Manchester by the Sea was beyond insanely amazing. Andrew deserved an Oscar, but not above Casey!
Hands down, my favorite scene in the whole movie. So heroic but also humbling. Such a good film ❤️
I don’t care what anyone says. That man deserved the highest of honors that any one man could get. I’m not talking about just military. He was a real hero and a person that we all should strive to be like in some capacity
I can't imagine anyone would disagree with you
I’ve watched a lot of movies, this scene sticks with me more than any film scene and I’m not really sure why. Absolutely fantastic.
Imagine how many lives and fates were changed because of this one man. How many hundreds or thousands of people exist today because he saved their forefathers
What an incredible human being. My absolute respect!
"I'm gonna fix you up" we don't deserve this angel
"Lord, help me get one more."
Then, he saved 75 soldiers.
out of all movies i watched this one made me cry
The older I get, the more certain scenes in movies make me cry or tear up. This is one of those scenes.
Whenever I see this scene, one of the things I think about is how many people Today are alive because of him.
