Paul’s been studying up on Western philosophy and has even more burning questions for our exceedingly patient resident expert, Professor #StephenAsma.
    (Part 1 here: • 52. ASK THE PHILOSOPHE... )
Lean in to these bite-sized lessons about rationalists, empiricists and idealists, and Stephen’s explanation of the notoriously difficult to understand German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Then it’s on to romantic thinkers like Arthur Schopenhauer, or as Paul describes him “the pessimist.” Next are key figures in the philosophy of existentialism like Kierkegaard, Jean-Paul Sartre and Nietzsche, and don’t forget that famous nihilist Albert Camus. All that and Martin Heidegger, the they-self, and a discussion of what it means to be authentic in the world.
If you have even a passing curiosity of philosophy, even in the name of dinner party fodder, this is the Chinwag for you. It’s Ask the Philosopher: Part Deux!
    Chin-word of the week: PHENOMENOLOGY
Paul Giamatti is an award-winning actor and producer, and the self-proclaimed Emperor of Neptune. Stephen Asma is a professor and author specializing in the philosophy of science, religion, and art. He also is the acting Minister of Triton for the Chinwag.

You guys should bring back the video visuals of yourselves during these conversations. It's so entertaining to watch your facial expressions and adds another level of fun energy to the podcast that I really enjoyed during the first few shows.

Loved this podcast and have been looking forward to it since Part 1. I was talking to my dad about it (sent links) and he wondered if you've done an episode on Colin Wilson. Can't find one - any plans? He seems to be right up your weird-and-wonderful alley. Thanks for the delight of listening to you.

Came here after the chinwag with Bill Hader where he said this was a favorite. Was not disappointed!

Something that might make for a good Chinwag: the story of Gerald Bull and his mysterious "Space Research Corporation".

brilliant sojourn in the philosophy section ;)
one for the mailbag: cloning would make for an interesting Chinwag topic. Cloning as a sci-fi trope, Giovanni Maio's four observations, and the bioethics/philosophy involved 🐑🐑

I always thought an actor was like a vessel. They use their bodies and voices but try to keep their self out of it but I do agree it would be hard to completely remove the self.

I have a suggestion. Next Ask The Philosopher, have Steven smoke the pot or eat an edible.
    Call it The Philosopher's Stoned.
    Thank you.

Just do it! - what about societal philosophies - live, laugh, love ...ect.. or the visual messages in adds. are these the philosophies of today?- they certainly have more of a presence than scholarly writings.
I'm curious to where my philosophy sits because I know it's been said before or at least it's just a mix of some dudes: All of life one experiences is a continuation of the past and even if you feel like you have free will that feeling is created by the past too. To say - "oh look: I am choosing to raise my arm, so therefore I have free will is really happening because you were trying to prove a point that you have free will, but wouldn't have done so if not." The only thing slightly nuanced I have to offer is the combination of determinism and Annata (no self) - and the nuance is, well.... first I think a lot a lot of philosophers are too scared to admit that because there is no free will that it doesn't matter what you do - Every time I"ve heard the deterministic view it always ends with, BUT, "we still have a moral obligation to take care of our fellow neighbors, blah, blah,nlah....be nice anyways". - I think they're only saying that because they are most likely important (like Sam Harris who I really admire) and therefore wants to spread positivity to continue to be a admired person. I too lean towards positivity, but that's only because of my past. I've had a good upbringing, and want to be a good person, so I keep that inertia going, but because I'm not famous and no one is going to read this - I feel like it's easier for me to say: You have no free will and therefore it doesn't matter what you do, because you are going to do it anyways. After writing this I realize I'm not really saying anything interesting - More interestingly is the present moment -like--- ok - what are you going to do with your philosophy? Does it actually move you - are you influence by it?

again , I think - everything is just happening - it's all amazing or horrific and everything in between (whatever way you're gonna look at it)
