You both have great points and cars as examples, but I have to admit, I'm grooving more on '97. The RX-7 may be a stretch, but I'm willing to do that over the RX-8. The 7 was a great car. Not mentioned was that generation Civic. That was the last gen for 4 wheel independent, uneven length, double wishbone suspension.
I think the car design went downhill after 95-96 because extensive computer use and regulations. I have a 6th civic but the 5gen looks better imho. Let's not even talk about the horrible 7gen. Examples that come to my mind are ferrari 355, honda city, nsx (lost the pop-up head lamps), integra, mitsubishi colt, mazda mx5, porsche 911 obviously, almost all french cars...
2006 model year is the first that comes to my mind. Ford GT, Corvette C6 Z06, Dodge Charger, Hummer H1 Alpha! Second year of my favorite modern Mustang generation Gen 5. Second year of the great Porsche 997 generation. Ferrari still making one of my favorites the F430. Lamborghini making the Murcielago and the Gallardo! It was an awesome year!
1972. Big Bumpers and emissions hadn't kicked in. But car design was in a siblime state. You had the Ferrari Daytona, Lamborghini Muira, BMW 3.0csi and 2002tii, Citroen SM and too many others to mention. To be sure there are many beautiful cars from the 1960's also, but 1972 was a peak year. By the mid-70's, regulations were strangling cars. They eventually recovered, after a fashion, but were never as beautiful or unrestrained again.
I respectfully disagree. Cars back then got you WAY less power for the money. If you wanted to do 0-60 in the 5-second range, you needed to be a baller that could afford a Porsche 911. Today? You can do it with a base Mustang that's considerably more reliable and gets 30mpg. A new Mazda Miata is just as quick as the original Shelby GT350.
That’s the best “classic” car year, in terms of Modern cars 1997 is by far the best year, just look at Toyota’s lineup: Mk4 Supra, Celica GT4, Ae111 Levin with a Blacktop 20v 4AGE with factory ITBs, The 2nd Gen Century (ie the V12 Century, the only mass produced Japanese car ever with a V12), The Landcruiser, the majority of the Lexus Lineup…. THIS IS COMING FROM ONE MANUFACTURER!!! 😂😂😂 and nearly every Japanese Manufacturer is doing this as well as the Italians as well as the Germans and Americans (albeit to a lesser extent).
@@griffins750 I would certainly agree that the GT350 is cooler and more special than a Miata. The point I'm trying to make is that modern cars offer so much more power than in the 1970s, and they do so while being far more safe, lightweight, fuel-efficient, and reliable. We are absolutely spoiled nowadays in terms of power and performance, and I'd choose it any day.
I can’t believe Doug forgot the Bugatti Veyron! But there’s also a huge list of other great cars like the Cobalt SS, GTO, Trailblazer SS, Cayenne Turbo, Cayman, Saleen S7, Zonda, Saleen & Roush mustangs, DB9, C6 Z06, SL65, Koenigsegg CCR, Audi S6 V10, STS-V, XLR-V.
I say early 90's mainly because EVERY car was actually OK or amazing. Finding a complete pile was kinda hard. Basically everything out of Japan was gold. Even America had some stuff that would not a total pile lol.
My pick is 2008. I remember going to Lamborghini Las Vegas and Naples Motorsports back then, and seeing brand new LP640's, SLR Mclarens and manual F430's. Not to mention the 997.1, W211 E63 AMG and W221 S65 AMG were still in production.
that is definitely one downside to 2005, Gallardo and Murci are still pre-facelift, but then again Gallardo does have the better sounding, but less reliable engine
The correct answer is 2014 1st gen Audi R8 Lamborghini Huracan Ferrari 458 McLaren P1 Porsche 918 Ferrari La Ferrari Bugatti Veyron was still on sale R35 Gtr C7 Corvette Jaguar F Type 991 911 Alfa 4C AMG GT W222 S Class The list goes on and on, plenty of cool cars still offered in a manual at this time and most of the good autos had moved to dual clutch
I'd argue that 2013 takes it. I'm not at all sure what crap was out then, but it had the P1, 918 Spyder, and LaFerrari. What a pinnacle year for the top dogs of the automotive world. Second pick would be an era I could buy a McLaren F1, 911 GT1, and CLK-GTR. If I could go back further, I'd pick 1964 with the first ever Mustang, Ford GT40, Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, and Ferrari 250 GTO all available at the same time.
totally agree. Also the german trios were all still v8's (c63, m3, rs5), the gen 5 viper just came out, corvette c6 zr1, and hot hatches like focus st and golf r/gti were starting to pick up in popularity to bring us the hot hatch market we have right now
100% with 2005!! Let's also not forget: - Bugatti Veyron - RR Phantom and Maybach 57/62 - Bentley Continental GT - New AMG V12's (SL 65, CL65, ...) - New AMG 55 V8's (E55 W211 and SL55 for example) - 350Z - New S-Class, original CLS etc etc Best era ever!
Best year for cars is 05, you had the 370z, the R34 skyline was heading out, the Ferrari F430 was out, Ford GT, Carrera GT, E46 M3, which imo is the best looking M3, Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Murcielago, Infiniti G35, Infiniti FX35, best year for cars
2005 Is the best mordern model year for cars, let me tell you why. Still had the NB Miata S2000 Just got that new retro styled Mustang Still had the Toyota MR2 Spyder One of the last years before Renault really showed its influence over Nissan ect ect...could add more but im lazy
Listening to this was so nostalgic and entertaining. Both years brought back memories for me of being a kid and a senior in high school. As much as I love the Gallardo and E46 M3 (black). As much as I loved-and saw the merits-of both arguments, I agree with Kennan's choice and opinion of 1997.
06 6 speed Acura TSX owner here. Doug is right the mid-2000s is the sweet spot IMO. Car handles like it's on rails with double wishbones front and rear, you can drive the snot out of it on a twisty back road without dying, crazy reliable, easy to work on/get parts, and it had a simple intuitive interior. Only gripe i have is it's a rattling squeak fest after 220K miles and nearly 20 years. No cars before or after this era really do it for me. I plan to drive it another 10 years or so until i can get a FK8 Type R for under $20K.
I really feel left aside hearing and seeing several testimonies from people on profits they make from Bitcoin/Forex Investment... Can someone recommend a good expert that trade on my behalf and generate profit for me.
Wow!! I really love these "think pieces". Im genuinely curious, and who better to explore these questions but Doug...and his besty Kennan. Awesome concept
Doug is more on point than he realizes. In 2004 Mercedes blitzed the horsepower wars. Car & Driver tested their most powerful V12 in their smallest car and did 0-60 in 3.6 seconds. Thats the first year of the Twin Turbo V12 SL600. The 2005 AMG SL65 would've been even quicker but no street tires could keep up with it's 604hp and 738 lbs/ft of torque. But in 2005 the SL65 laid down an 11.9 quarter mile at 123mph. Mercedes' own V8 SLR Mclaren could only match the SL600's 0-60 [3.6sec] and lost to the SL65's 50-70mph [2.3sec] times. What a year to drive, in 2005.

that is definitely one downside to 2005, Gallardo and Murci are still pre-facelift, but then again Gallardo does have the better sounding, but less reliable engine
Audi R8 was out at that point too. Saved Audi from bankruptcy.
I love that Doug cashes out on cars and bids and now is just making all the content he’s always wanted to, with his friends
Doug is the type of guy that gives his friend a Doug Score!!! 🙄
🤣🤣
I agree with Doug about 2005 being the best year. But, the CLK-GTR was a masterpiece, a legend, an icon.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Zonda F
The correct answer is 2014
1st gen Audi R8
Lamborghini Huracan
Ferrari 458
McLaren P1
Porsche 918
Ferrari La Ferrari
Bugatti Veyron was still on sale
R35 Gtr
C7 Corvette
Jaguar F Type
991 911
Alfa 4C
AMG GT
W222 S Class
The list goes on and on, plenty of cool cars still offered in a manual at this time and most of the good autos had moved to dual clutch
I'm going 2004...ford gt, carrera gt, ford mustang cobra, porsche 997 911, BMW e46 m3, honda s2000...there were a lot
... lest we forget the rare, ultimate version of the ultimate sports car, the 2004 MazdaSpeed MX-5 Miata. 👌
I really like the banter of these two and how Doug plays off of this guy. Also the editing with the zooms! Need to see more of these!
Kennin you forgot to mention the Maclaren F1 was in pro until 98
I did a Google search just to make sure. F1 was 92-98. How did they not mention the F1
Also the german trios were all still v8's (c63, m3, rs5), the gen 5 viper just came out, corvette c6 zr1, and hot hatches like focus st and golf r/gti were starting to pick up in popularity to bring us the hot hatch market we have right now
Such an interesting video/discussion! Thanks Doug (and friend)!
2:03 never saw F50 with that wheels
Doug the kind of guy to add speed holes to hisCarrera GT
100% with 2005!!
Let's also not forget:
- Bugatti Veyron
- RR Phantom and Maybach 57/62
- Bentley Continental GT
- New AMG V12's (SL 65, CL65, ...)
- New AMG 55 V8's (E55 W211 and SL55 for example)
- 350Z
- New S-Class, original CLS
etc etc
Best era ever!
2008-9 was pretty dope.
The 2005 Fiesta ST had a 2.0L Twin-Cam naturally aspirated engine
and the Focus a 2.5L turbo charged 5-cylinder, fun times
@@treles Truely an epic time for the fiesta and focus
We all knew 2005 was his most obvious choice. Because it’s the correct choice.
Doug: Japanese sports cars were going away in 1997 except for MK4 Supra
The R33, S14, 180SX, 300ZX, NSX, EVO IV, RX-7: Allow us to introduce ourselves

@@mworld2611 NA Miata did finish production in 1997, NB started in 1998

Kennan
I agree with Doug, I would pick 2002-2008.
2009 for sure, they had to actually make really good cars that people would buy even in a bad economy
Don’t forget the Hyundai Tiburon came out in 96. Pontiac solstice/Saturn sky, mercury marauder, crown Vic, Buick LaSabre, Town car
I agree with doug, 2005 is one of the best years for cars
one of my favourite cars (Daihatsu Copen) was available in 05
LOL Vine in 05? the iPhone came out in 07 and the App Store came out a year after.
Doug is the type of guy to compliment Ben something random
Listening to this was so nostalgic and entertaining. Both years brought back memories for me of being a kid and a senior in high school. As much as I love the Gallardo and E46 M3 (black). As much as I loved-and saw the merits-of both arguments, I agree with Kennan's choice and opinion of 1997.
Doug is the type of guy to have a startup chime as his ringtone
COOOKIIEEE! Always look forward to cookie time with Doug, and Kennen.... and Hoovy!
1997 get's my vote, too. Don't forget about the McLaren F1 and various pre-merger AMGs, especially the R129 SL❤.

im gonna be fully honest i think 1993, 2005, and about 2012ish are the best years in automotive history, ur so right dude
I knew that Doug was gonna choose 2005…
2013
Seems like so many car things happened in 2013
Infiniti changed naming scheme
Ford refreshed many cars
Etc
I’m with Kennan. 97 was the first year of the 5th gen prelude
Doug is the type of guy to use his Carrera GT as a table for his cookies
1994

Nice.
How in the hell do you not mention the C5 Corvette that was introduced in 1997? It was the first truly modern Corvette with many big advancements.
Cause dudes list was lackluster
Doug the kind of guy who has trainings wheels on his road bike.
Love these videos of you just sitting down with a buddy and talking cars!
I really feel left aside hearing and seeing several testimonies from people on profits they make from Bitcoin/Forex Investment... Can someone recommend a good expert that trade on my behalf and generate profit for me.
Who is this Mrs Letton Deb everyone is talking about and how do i contact her directly?
I could be wrong but the last year the RX-7 was sold in the US was in 1995 because after that the RX-7 was no longer being exported to the US
The e36 m3 we had stateside was a neutered s52b32 variant. E46m3 had the same engine in the US as Europe
Thank God! I was already worried we won't get a "Doug argues about Cars" Episode this Weekend. I love listening to Doug & Friends talk about anything Car related, even if i end up disagreeing with him or the Friends sometimes.
Great Topic btw! And regarding the BMW M5 with V10 as well as the Audi, definitely agree with Doug here.
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
I agree more with Doug. But I don't know if it would align with my choice, I would have to think about it for a while.
