  • After experiencing some unexpected obstacles in life, Dr. Countermine went on a journey of personal growth, learning that it’s okay to not always be happy. She discusses how our brains aren’t wired for constant positivity and how we can live a fulfilling life through mindfulness. In her talk, Dr. Countermine redefines what it means to be happy and how we can achieve this sought after state. Note: this talk was recorded according to local and national COVID-19 safety guidelines without a live audience (clapping was added in post-production). Beloved Associate Teaching Professor, Musician. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    "Because here is the thing
    Life is hard sometimes
    It's painful sometimes
    Scary sometimes
    And sad sometimes
    It's also overwhelmingly beautiful sometimes
And filled with happiness, joy and love sometimes
Life is live in the moment
But it seems to me that maybe our culture has us so focused on the pursuit of happiness
That we've forgotten to pay attention to the journey
To all the moments, for better or for worst, happen along the way" " Molly Countermine

Wow, the physical symptoms of anxiety she went through are EXACTLY what I went through! I even went to the ER like her, but I thought I was having a heart attack, not a stroke. Went to all kind of specialists because I had problems swallowing and constantly felt like something was choking me from within. Vertigo, exhaustion, lost the ability to drive. All because of anxiety. It messes up your brain and your body.

amazing! i always felt a pressure to be happy all the time, and that only leads me to feel guilty whenever i am not happy. i always felt that by telling us to be happy, we don't learn how to deal with unhappiness. this was a really cool talk!!!

did you find happiness ? there is no happiness in life . there are moments of satisfaction and gratitude . the moment you loose gratitude the moment u start feeling all those bad emotions . the moment u stop working on ur self just let go everything will crumble down . in this life as humans , we will feel everything because life throws everything at you so you can learn and find ur target . just don't quit and have patience and keep going . don't run away but face , allow your self to feel , learn and face .its not only about deep breathing its about FAITH , have faith that nothing last , good doesn't last and bad doesn't last . okay whats the point of life then ? its to better yourself and make better choices , all the challenges when accomplished u will feel 'happy" accomplishments in life I call happy .

I personally think that many people get struct effected by social media. That things happened in Japan as well.
They should avoid it at first. I am shocked to hear that Many Americans get anxiety.

Very valuable and great talk. However, it is quite a shame that, in spite of being a college professor at a well-known university, Dr. Countermine gave the entire talk without providing any credit to Eastern religions which have propounded meditation and contemplative practices for centuries.
Going further, Buddhism specifically talks about a strand of "unsatisfactoriness" or Dukka in everyone's life - and how to understand and overcome it. The title has an uncanny resemblance to this concept and I highly doubt that Dr. Countermine was unaware of this.
In future, I hope Dr. Countermine endeavors to meet the same standards her students are expected to in requiring that they provide proper attributions in all their work.
