Penetration Test of Bitumen

The penetration test measures the hardness and softness of the bitumen.
The harder the #bitumen, the lower the penetration value and vice versa.
In this test, a penetrometer is used. It applies the needle with a load of 100-gram into the bitumen surface for 5 seconds.
Grading bitumen with this test helps to use the proper bitumen for expected weather.

Why penetration time of bitumen is 5sec?

This test is done based on the ASTM D5 strandard. 5 second penetration time is a standard value used to classify bitumen according to its consistency.
