You don't have to use the 5200 controller Mark. I know it's been said before but you can use a Wico control stick for analog games. You can also buy master play interface and use a Sega Genesis controller for digitally controller games. Playing the 5200 with a Sega Genesis controller, now that's playing with power.
Still a nice bonus that the Star Wars Arcade games were included in Rebel Strike.

someone on atari age is building something that lets you use jaguar controllers.

Yup, the Wico Command Control for the 5200. It was very good, you could choose between self-centering joystick or not, or even just have it sel-center on the horizontal axis, or the vertical one. Had its own keypad, and was very well built.
Alaska1925 And yeah I was right the XE line has a more arcade like vectorish remake of the arcade game as well from the later 80s.

I was so jealous of my friend Kevin who had a 5200: played this game whenever we went to his house. I agree about the controller: 30 years later, it's still awful.

Play the 8 bit computer version! Xegs or an 800/800xl. Just as good as the 5200 but with a standard cx40, wico, genesis pad, or my preference, a coin control competition pro.
I think my favorite port is the one for MS-DOS.
Aha, I see that this Atari 5200 has been given a composite video mod. It's much nicer than the original RF from the older videos, with that annoying loud hum in the background. I'll take the dot crawl over that anyday. As for the 5200 joystick, I would look into a new joystick that someone has very recently built and is selling for around $125. It is a very sturdy joystick with arcade-caliber buttons and the stick itself appears to be very precise. And, of course, the trackball controller is a must, although I don't know if it works with Star Wars Arcade.

Have to admit, the game looks impressive. Also, the new intergalactic space arcade CRT station looks so crisp and clean...
This did also come out for Atari 8-bit computers, so it would work with the XEGS that Mark has.
I have the version for the Atari ST. Graphic are better than this version and it has sound bites from the film...think "Great shot kid that was one in a million" was one of them

I was going to sell my old 5200 but games like this really make me rethink that. Now I am thinking about getting some new controllers for the system and picking up an old CRT tv. BTW how did you connect the system to your TV? The picture quality was great and I remember my old FR modulator connection to be touchy .

Wow, yeah, this really shows the difference in power between the 2600 and the 5200, I mean, this actually looks like the arcade game after all, even when it's obvious that these are sprites and not vectors...

The one thing that always bugged me about Star Wars: The Arcade Game was that you're supposed to be flying an X-Wing, but it doesn't feel like it. You're moving a crosshair around the screen and the ship just kind of heads in the direction that you move the crosshair. It's like there's an invisible rubber band between the crosshair and the nose of your ship, pulling it in that direction.
Ahh. The 5200. One redeemimg quality. The true analog trackball. Great versions of missile command, centipede, and even space invaders. Try it! For all other joystick games, you're way better off with Atari 8-bit computer versions and using any of the myriad of sticks availble for it.
So glad that they remade this arcade game it's now in the wendy's arcade

You should play this game on the Macintosh SE/512/SE-30. Its great! Monochrome but great! Plays with this new invention xerox came up with called a "mouse".
Those aren't the right pew-pew lasers. Defender must have been visiting at the time they made that game. Oh, and Mark- you need to blow the Deathstar into more than 4 pieces. They're just reassembling it for the next level.
Not playing it on the XEGS? Or at least using a third party stick? Or maybe the later 80s Domark versions?

+Pisces Yoshi I always got the feeling it was because he tended to be alot more negative than Mark. Gamers tend to have... problems... when a game they like isnt liked by someone else. Particularly reviewers. There's also the fact that he tended to like Nintendo's stuff, which apparently is a sin, so says the **ahem** "hardcore" crowd. I personally thought his content was very good.
Vector Graphic games are the GREATEST!!!
I loved the 5200 controller, never had a single problem with it. I beat pitfall 2 with it as well as a lot of other games. You just need to get use to it I guess.
I hate the thumb controllers they have now. They aren't joysticks, they are just lousy thumb controllers, they sucked with the intellivision and they sucked with nintendo and up. Can't a game system make a real controller, instead of thumb pads all the time? Ugh, I hate thumb pads.

Most loved game on the most flopped console with the most hated controller of all time.
I need working controllers for my 5200! tempted to just get rid of it.
I saw a game room tour of Mike Matei from Cinemassacre and he had a5200 but had bought a controller adapter and used a sega Genesis controller but adapter looked large bulky and expensive and he didn't say where he bought it.
He used a master play interface. People love to hate the 5200 for not having controller options without knowing there are many options, including the master play interface. I purchased a third party interface from a guy on Atari age who makes them and they are excellent. I use a 2600 joystick for analog games and a Sega Genesis controller for digital games. this guy has a dank setup I would personally prefer a widescreen HDCRT that supports 480i/480p/720p/1080i/1080p and has svideo component and hdmi included
IND4GR0V3 You would need to scale up the older systems, because the older ones are made for CRT tv's

Incorrect, these old school low res games actually look worse on a hi res tv because of the upscaling that gets applied….. plus your image would not fill up the whole screen and would be annoying to look at
Thr 5200 controller is a weird mix of a 2600 and intellivision controller.
It’s just a bizarre design, even at a time when controllers started getting a bit weird

I feel like if there was a Super Mario 64 mod where instead of a floating Mario head, there was a floating Jar Jar head... Mark would spend countless hours in sadistic joy contorting and pulling Jar Jar's face into contortions that go against nature.
That or if there was a Whack-a-Jar Jar machine. Mark would probably use a real hammer though...

In this day and age you might as well just play the actual arcade through Mame instead of a watered down port.

How do you film the CRT without having the flashing line things?
He probably has a video sync device for his camera.
R-Zone filter.
One good way is to increase the shutter speed to 1/60 or above (I usually use 1/30). This is because CRT TVs take about 1/60 of a second to draw the entire image, so if your shutter is open for less than that, it won't capture the entire image being drawn, causing those dark bands.

The thankyou splash screen at the end is killing your videos Mark, they are nearly two minutes long! Just throw a simple 5 second splash screen with all the patreon names. My two cents anyway
you are dropping too many videos. I love your stuff have for many years. Undertow was a release of sorts for you. Your chemistry was great with Derek all seemed well. Then you drop undertow and carry the weight yourself while making money off patron... You also keep mentioning the RZone which is like a slap in the face to all undertow fans...
