    The benefit is keeping them from Fanatics. I think SGC ultimately gets retired. When this happens they could offer a crossover special and get a lot of cards submitted. My hope is SGC lives and there is a combined registry. If this is done, maybe SGC with better pricing is where collectors grade their registry commons and that becomes their new niche. This was a great discussion - George I loved the research and stats. If there is a combined registry I will be happy. I will never complete a registry set as I truly don't care if my card is SGC or PSA. I would shoot up the registry if SGC is allowed even if they somehow discount them. Does card ladder have what VCP has for vintage? I have never used it.

    Usually the answer to any question like this is “follow the money.” Ever since SGC lowered its price to $15 per card without era restrictions, without membership fee, without minimum submission quantity, they have been gaining market share. PSA has revealed its concern by having a $15 per card special almost every month. But $15 per card probably isn’t sustainable. SGC turn around time have increased. There just aren’t enough people willing to grade cards for what these companies pay. I bet $15 per card puts pressure on PSA’s bottom line. I suspect that within a year our so SGC’s price goes up to $19. Or at least you have to buy a membership and send in a minimum quantity to get $15 per card. That’s what I’m afraid of and would be the true bummer of this transaction.

    Hey guys. On your eBay point about sold listings being related to listing price…I went to a new shop the other day. I had bought something from the owner at a show about a month ago. It was for a Schmidt Rookie and it was priced GREAT. I went to the guys shop yesterday and he had a huge vintage selection. I start pulling out some stuff and at the end, we go through price. In my opinion, I was shocked at his prices. Super high. So, I had done my homework before going in on sold listings and told him where I was getting my prices from. His response- that’s good for modern cards, but vintage is vintage and he proceeded to quote prices from his guide. Needless to say, I didn’t get everything I wanted, but did work out a good deal on a 73 Ryan. Thoughts on the comment about vintage is vintage? I was kind of floored considering the deal we did at a show.

    Prior to this conversation and SGC sale. I’ve never heard a sports card content creator admit that SGC would never catch up with PSA. It’s funny how when the ink dries we can finally get some honesty.

    I kinda wonder if they move to get SGC was purely to sure up their grading market share before taking Collectors public again. Nat Turner took them private basically right as everything really started to boom and since then they have probably 5x their grading capacity as well as doubled the price they charge to grade a card. Seems to me the time would be right to cash in a major way with an IPO. They paid $853 million in late 2020 and have since had an estimated valuation of $4.3 billion in 2022.

    Great video Mike! George is always such a great addition and when you 2 get together SO much information gets shared. Definitely agree with the points about the inflated BIN on Ebay, it's super frustrating.

    PSA will put the nail in the coffin on sets the day they charge for the set registry.
    New collectors have not used it even in the last twenty years. You cannot collect a modern set; the registry does not have them. Set-collecting is all but over in the modern parallel world.
    PSA makes more money off grading the 1960 Elmer Valo sharp cards, etc., than it would ever make off set-registry subscriptions. It would be silly for them to charge for it as that would kill it.

    So, Probstein thinks that eBay should not allow sellers to put a fixed price on their cards? I think that’s a bad idea. I can see how that would help his high end market, but ultimately it Takes a selling tool out of the toolbox, and I’m not a fan.

    What do you both think is going to happen to the registry? Is an SGC nine going to equate to the same value on the registry as a PSA nine? If it does, then the value of my SGC nines just shut up. If it does not an SGC grade is inferior to PSA’s grade.

    Everything you said about Probstein is true. However, he also does shady stuff and supports bad actors in the hobby. He sells empty / used packaging for all sorts of collectibles, which we all know is used by scammers to repackage unauthentic / unoriginal items. And he knows this and has openly talked about it on his Instagram page.I don't get it. Plenty of other product out there to buy so I refuse to support that kind of operation.

    Defensive move, if sgc was working on a registry the game going forward would change. Buy SGC, integrate the registries and now there's no reason to grade anywhere else. You would then be able to compete on psa, sgc, or a hybrid rank. The universal registry is more important to future grading, which is where the money is going forward

      I would say AI is going to be the future of grading, but I guess we will see

    • @4LeafCards
      @4LeafCards 6 місяців тому

      @@ACD1994 that can be integrated for sure... but I've seen people do some crazy things for that registry rank

    Could you have a registry based off of a point system tied to the last known sale? That takes all the perceived grading bias out of it?
