Dionne is criminally underrated and never given the recognition she deserves. She is a technically brilliant vocalist who really understands the theory of music and technique. You can tell Whitney got a lot of her mannerisms from Dionne and this is my favourite song of Dionnes. She makes singing look deceivingly easy.
@@eightinches3671that's a problem I have with so many people nowadays misusing that word, because they personally are unaware of the talent and success artists have enjoyed.
@@GalaxyNexus1 exactly. People all too often get on these sites, and use that WAY-overused phrase "he/she is SO under-rated" for artists who may be in reality superstars, or at least have had multiple mega-hits.
Cissy Houston, is the younger sister of Dionne Warwick's mother Nana Drinkard-Warwick. Cissy is only a few years older than Dionne, so Dionne was more of an Aunt to Whitney, than cousin. But yes, they are cousins.
Ms. Dionne is a phenomenal vocal technician!!! The go-to legendary icon! The greatest whoever did it!! Her vocal ability is one of a kind, unique, natural, beautiful, unpredictable, and geniously intentional all at once❤❤❤
I remember backpacking through Thailand with my mates in the 1990’s we stopped at a market and I bought some of her albums on cassettes (😂) . . . . My mates had never heard of her but later that night when we where swinging in our hammocks smiling and stoned . . . They thanked me . . She is Magnificent ❤
If you ever find the time to do "all in love is fair" by Dionne Warwick, my word that performance is a masterclass in how to make a song your own and make it better from an already great one.
Whitney Houston is always considered the superstar of the family, but Dionne Warwick has always been my favorite. I think Dionne was at her peak in the 1980’s and was singing then with a fully confident stage presence and a beautiful full tone.
Ms. Dionne is mos def the 1st superstar of that family. She paved the way for Whitney and so many other singer's as well especially when it was tough for black singers. She made the music world take notice that great singers like her had no color!!
She received the best pop female Grammy for this song in ‘79. I saw her live at the Queen Elizabeth theatre (Vancouver) in 88 or 89 which was a treat. She was a smoker back then, but it didn’t seem to affect her vocals negatively it seems. A lot of us smoked in those days!
Sadly the constant smoking caught up with her by the mid-1980s and by the end of the 1990s her voice was almost unrecognizable. That said, we all have our vices and her legacy based on her prime years is untouchable.
I remember her when I was a young teenager I absolutely loved and adore her singing she is a legend back in the late 60s 70s 80s what an awesome voice.
I saw her last monday in the Queen Elisabeth Hall here in Antwerp, and it was a truly magical experience. At her 81 she is the definition of sass & class and such a sweet and beautifull presence. At her age she still has a better voice than some other younger artists. Near the end she asked us to sing along or to sing some part of a song. And she tolled us off in such a funny way, because we screwed up, before we had to repeat our singing. I absolutely adore her!
Everybody needs some good Dionne songs sooner or later. She sings with such ease and wow...what a warm and fantastic entertainer she is. Thanks for sharing this live version...I never heard it sang so grand
Oh I never new you reacted to this wonderful performance people often don’t realise Dionne Warwick had a powerful voice when she wanted to use it ! One of her best vocal performances.
I know this may be hard for somepeople, but I am about to bring the race card.I know that so many people can be about Dionne awesome vocals, and her presentation, I also would like to suggest reading up about,Ms Warwick experience with the music industry. It may give some awareness as too why she did not get some of the credits that she deserved in America
The artist that i can tell the most depths tone that i ever heard her voice is something patti is correct when she said dionne has a different voice quality she is only has that tone.
You definitely have to watch a clip where she sings That's what friends are for with Whitney Houston, Luther Wandross and Stevie Wander. It is superb. Luther and Whitney are just out of this world
Dionne forever! also they were related. she was Whitney's cousin! definitely check out her live performance of 'I didn't mean to love you' her voice goes on and on🙌🏽
You are so right - "stunning"! - btw, Whitney Houston was actually Dionne younger cousin - Dionne's mother and Whitney's grandmother were sisters - The Drinker Sisters, a very famous gospel group - no question, Whitney admired and modeled a lot of her style on Dionne both in terms of appearance and vocal range and style, the whole family was very close - thanks for this, loved watching you reaction - what a treasure Dionne is! :-)
This is probably one her best live performances for sure. She was Whitney Houston’s 1st cousin, so definitely some similarities in their performances. She was never with Motown believe or not. During this time period she was with Arista records.
I was about to say the same thing. Whitney Houston's mother and Dionne's mother were sisters. Also Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston was very close to Aretha Franklin for over 50 years and also sang backup for Aretha Franklin.
I don't where can I find whitney houston that version she sang it so so well and I was in a little boy and I was in tears not me alone but all the audience went to tears stand up at the end herself got the emotion with tears even doinnne her cousin was there too wirh some eyes watering its was at 85 and I was 10 years old.
Dionne and her mother and sister and cousin (Whitney) and Aunt (Cissy) and others all sang as a family group then Whitney's mother Cissy, and Dionne's sister Dee Dee, went on to form the Sweet Temptations who were Elvis's backing singers, and for other artists.
She heavily influenced Whitney not just in the voice but also in the mannerisms. Being her cousin, it's understandable, but it doesn't take from the surprise every time you hear and see it
Dionne Warwick is fab and this is one of my favourite all-time songs. I first heard her when she released 'Heartbreaker' written by the BeeGees in the 80s. I then bought her greatest hits and she has an incredible back catalogue.I don't know if you'd consider doing a critique of Sheena Easton. ua-cam.com/video/xriz9DIwooo/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/WagZMyDhCIQ/v-deo.html
Whitney Houston is a cousin of Dionne Warwick. Whitney’s mother, the gospel-trained vocalist, Cissy Houston, is an aunt of Dionne. Cissy is the one who taught Whitney how to sing professionally.
I think you should listen also the cover song of regine velasques with the same song I'll never love this way again😊... but I also love original version Dionne Warwick song 🤩🤩😍
There is performance video of her singing a cover of stevie wonder's all is fair in love. She changed the lyric to all in love is fair. It's more mind-blowing than this one.
Holy crap. I thought she was this loungy Norah Jones very midtone level singer. She has some chops and I do see a lot of similarities with Whitney Houston and she also does more with her live versions than the radio edits just like Whitney used to do. 👏👏👏
A blessed day to you! I hope you're doing great in life. Pls try to listen to Regine Velasquez's Ill Never Love this Way Again version, the one with 1.7 million views. God bless
Her shirt is very tasteful. Dionne believes in being true to her elderly ladies voice by not pushing it as it's in very rusty shape today. Let's offer her praise that she can still sing and attract interest at 85! Beautiful effort ❤
Dionne was one of the biggest female artists of the 1960s but after Bacharach and David split she struggled to maintain her success in the 70s. This record was produced by Barry Manilow for Dionne's big comeback album after Clive Davis signed her to Arista Records in 1979. It was a massive top 5 hit in the USA in late 79 but totally flopped here in the UK where Dionne had never quite had the same level of chart success. Cilla Black famously covered Anyone Who Had a Heart in 1964 giving her a UK No1 hit- Dionne was bitter about that and in concert she ALWAYS mentions it! "If I had coughed in my version, I swear Cilla would've coughed too". I've seen Dionne in concert several times over the decades and her unique voice and phrasing is incredible. She appeared with Gladys Knight & Randy Crawford on tour in 2000- 3 amazingly talented VOCALISTS! No dancers, no flashing lights - just awesome SINGING! Sadly her most recent performances are awful- her voice is shot mainly due to smoking too much weed over the past 60 years. Her recording career has included many iconic classics.
Hi Honest Vocal Coach. This version of her in this performance is superb. But please do a reaction on Regine Velasquez from the Philippines on this song. I'd love to see it with your honest reactions. Thanks and more power!
Dionne Warwick is the personification of tone and elegant musical choices, imo. One of the best there ever will be!
It could simply be mannerisms that both Dionne and Whitney developed because it is in them not because they were imitating one another.
Underrated? Dude, she couldn't have had a more successful career. Who is underrating her?
Who exactly is underrating her? Because no one growing up in my household has. 🤔

In fact, Dionne was not only an influence to Whitney, Whitney was Dionne's younger cousin. Whitney's mother is Dionne's aunt.

True but I mean I can't argue on why Whitney was the superstar on the family, Whitney was just a vocal gift it's not easy to beat her

She won 2 grammys that night RNB and Pop. First ever woman to reach that milestone.
Sadly the constant smoking caught up with her by the mid-1980s and by the end of the 1990s her voice was almost unrecognizable. That said, we all have our vices and her legacy based on her prime years is untouchable.
It's crazy to me that she didn't get affected by smoking like most people, well not severely. That's what you call true talent

You should watch her 1975 performance of All in Love is Fair. That performance is perfection!!
And it was performed in London.
Yes yes yes! A definitive performance. So hauntingly beautiful. ❤
Saw her concert 20 years ago in Singapore and also met her and her son after. True legend.
Cheers from Finland.
