OMG, Binghamton is where I'm from and I recognized the old city hall right away on the cover shot, made me stop and tap. I knew this happened there too as it was advertised.
This is an art form that can take place on a smaller scale as it does during the Winter Lights Festival in Portland, Oregon. Also it has taken place for years on the city hall in Nancy, France.
Nice piece. Large scale projection mapping like this offers amazing potential for the right artists - as you can see! Projection mapping can also be used on smaller scale however. If you already have a fairly recent laptop, and any video editing software with masking capabilities, then mapping a small to medium size house can be done with a budget that straddles 3-4 figures, rather than 5-6 figures. It does take time though. So say you want to do something like this for Halloween, for example, Id suggest you start researching and get to work now. Thanks for the nice segment. I love how he prints the 3D models and has them all around to spark inspiration.
Isn’t this what the Vincent Van Gogh Immersive experience is all about: projection mapping-only they used aspects of Van Gogh’s art? Would be great to know when a projection is coming to your town.
It is. I work security at the convention center in my city where the Van Gogh exhibition is currently. It was interesting to see how the whole space came together. After almost 3 months it will be coming down, pretty sure that will take less than half the time.
Just don't look into the projector beam directly and you'll be fine, much like you wouldn't want to look directly at the sun. These are laser projectors, after all!
They only rent the projectors. That being said, they have several local sponsors and also launch a kickstarter campaign every year to raise funds for the event. In fact, I'm wearing a LUMA sweater I got from the kickstarter a few years ago. Souce: I live in Binghamton and have gone to every LUMA festival.
@@MaxGarbaty Sponsors and grants. Ususally have a lot of grant work to fill out for federal or govt funding IF that was supplied at all. Companies also put in money as sponsors. Projectors weren't rented they were also provided by Panasonicas a sponsorship, the media software (Dataton Watchout) provided by Show Sage LLC the North American Distributor of Watchout also as a Sponsor. Local busniesses sponsored as well and they had to get permission from the city to shut down the streets around city hall and a main bar area.
Most of our setups at LUMA are minimum 3 projectors. But if you have the right size surface with the right projector lens, you could also do it with one projector. However, it's not just about the square footage you're covering; if a building as many facets or too much depth multiple will be required to avoid casting shadows.
What is the legality of Projection Mapping onto a building without asking permission ahead of time? For example if I wanted to temporarily project an onto the Washington Monument - would that be illegal ? 😀😀😀

This was amazing to see, and I'd love to see something like this some day.

This has been used in Mexico for years
Buildings are works of art in and of themselves. If we truly look at them and SEE what is there.
I approve of this entire video 👍
Additional information CBS left out is these were done using the projection mapping software Dataton Watchout
I saw Resolume too :)
Yup! That's what we currently use.
