This lesson features a riff of mine that I used to get my hand back in shape after a recent break that I took from playing.
I had a few weeks off and when I picked up the bass again I was struggling to play as my hands felt weaker. So I came up with this riff to focus in on playing with good hand shape, accurate timing and to develop dexterity.
I've also been working on some upcoming lessons about triplet fills and this is very much in the style of those cool fills using pull-offs that you hear bassists like Ray Brown and Ron Carter play.
I hope you enjoy playing the riff and If you have any tips or ideas on how to get back into playing after a break please share them in the comments section below the video.

I already said that this was a great lesson, and that is true. However, WOW, this one is going to take some time, perhaps some months, to figure out totally. I am still working on the first few measures of the blues in G with lots of the same pull offs and hammer ons, and I am not there yet. And there I am just working on the first 4 to 8 measures. A good teacher challenges his students, and there is no doubt that you are doing that. Go Geoff!

Bill Blackmore Hey Bill, thanks, i really appreciate your support. It's a lot more fun doing these lessons knowing that they are being enjoyed and it's great to hear that its' giving your technique a workout :-) I found it a lot harder to play than I first thought, especially the timing. Keeping relaxed at the same time is so hard! Cheers Geoff

This is really great! I learned John Patitucci's "Jesus is on the Mainline" (not for religious reasons, but a recital back in college), and that certainly had its share of hammer-on's and pull off's. Another tune I'm working on right now is called "Elegy for a Mom" by The Fresh Cut Orchestra. Fun stuff. Thanks for the tips!

Brandon Miller Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it. I also LOVE JP's "Jesus on the mainline", it's a superb piece!...I've not heard of Elegy for a Mom, but that's a great title so I will check it out! Cheers Geoff :-)

I don't have a good tone on my double bass due to thin strings it came with. What type of strings would you recommend? Will subscribe to your channel; like your teaching and how you position your left hand

Hi Geoff I've seen a few of your lessons and they seem really helpful. I was wondering; I have been playing electric bass guitar since christmas and I have picked it up fairly quickly and I can play some more complicated stuff now etc. I was thinking of getting a double bass next year (3/4 or 1/2 because I don't want to try something too different yet) do you think I should wait longer or will the transition be fine?

LeviiYT thanks I'm glad the lessons are useful. I also started out on electric and understand what you mean. I think that it makes sense to start playing upright as soon as possible. A regular 3/4, well set up bass with reasonable strings would be a great choice. The sooner you start the soon you make progress and it's great that you have the bass guitar background to help as you can transfer a lot across.

Cool lick. Doesn't sound nearly as good on electric (at least with me playing).
