Maria Brophy has been the art agent for her husband, Drew Brophy, for many years. She started a blog in response to the many art-business emails she received, this grew into releasing a fantastic book on the Art Business called "Art, Money & Success". I loved catching up with Maria in round two on TheCreativeEndeavour Podcast! We talked about the struggle her and Drew faced during the lock-downs, challenges of the art business, finding balance as an artist and much more. This was such an amazing experience and I found myself writing notes on the awesome tips she has for art business.
Maria has not only had a massive impact on the art world, but on me personally. I look forward to seeing where her journey takes her in the future!

Do you have any art business stories?
I do. I made a huge pivot in 2020, completely changed my business, my income, my life in a big way. Love what I am doing, always a balancing act between my online business, gallery and museum shows... But I'm really blessed.
Hi Andrew, love your podcasts and this one resonated with me just now. Currently I am a full time HGV driver in Scotland and have been studying through distance learning for my art degree (currently on the honours part). I am looking to I crease my profile locally so I looked at how I could use my existing body of work from my degree. I had completed a series of paintings depicting the medieval battle of Bannockburn 1314 where Robert the Bruce defeated tge larger English force, based on the eye witness account by the English Friar who was captured and the price of his freedom was a poem of the event. Anyway, close to where I live is a medieval castle that was the home of Robert the Bruce's grandson where I will hold a pop up exhibition of these works and do a live painting inside the castle itself so people can engage with me. The castle is operated as a charity, so I am playing the long term game to wait until closer to Christmas and hold an auction of the painting to raise funds for the castle. Like Maria suggests, the collaboration helps us both, they get an event and I get publicity from their marketing. This will be something that I can use further down the line to market myself. Sorry its a bit long winded, but we have to think creatively. Keep up the good work Andrew .
@@neilcramond_fineartist That's awesome, I wish you the best for your auction!
@@lindaglovergooch That is really inspirational to hear Linda! I'm glad you're loving it, you must be really happy with taking the leap!
@@AndrewTischlerArt Yes, I'm extremely grateful for the opportunities available. It did not come without doubt, fear and a whole lot of late nights (7 months) taking on the learning curve. I know you understand that as I've listened to your stories of the journeys through uncharted territory. Worth it... Yep, I'd do it again in a heartbeat as I'm sure you would too. 😁 I'm excited about what the future holds, my goals tell me I have a long way to go, but in looking back I can truly say... Wow, I did that!!! I can do more! 💃
Are you okay Andrew? You have lost a lot of weight!!!
Interview very very very interesting, instructive and so sincere.
In life the key to success is in our sincerity of peaceful mindset with everything
and there our art comes out of our heart into the hearts of others just like our words.
Wow, such a great clip. Thanks for what you're doing
Awesome interview guys!! Really really really eye opening and helped curve a lot of anxiety about pretty much all the questions touched. Also nice to know we out there are in this together and not alone. Thank you for inspiring encouraging and educating us. You are the best!! Thank you!
Andrew teshler is a great Artist
Ventilators were not part of the protocol. Respiratory therapists knew but did what they were ordered.
Did 1.1M views on TT with just av short timelapse making art, no face, no talking. Got purchases and custom orders from that.
good job man love the videos! Keep up the good work. All the best!!
You should do a story on Tyler Lamph Art out of Salt Lake City, he's grinding it out after deciding to focus 100% on his art, quit his day job and never looked back.
So many great ideas! Thank you both, I love this podcast
Too short!!! Oh my goodness, absolutely loved this interview. Thank you so much. So inspirational. Blessings
Great Podcast Andrew, enjoyed listening... always learning!! 😀 Staying open to always pivot how I think.
No one on youtube can explain so softly as you can professionally.
Andrew Tischler , a very good person and artist as well. May you live long happily 💖
Thank you for all you do, very uplifting!
What a great channel Andrew
I am launching a new online radio station here in Perth Western Australia, and I would love to promote your channel on it and restream your interview audios, with your permission.
Regards
Michael
What an inspirational talk! Thank you!
As an artist I find it very hard to set time aside every day to just paint without washing the dishes taking the dog out feeding the horse, laundry , mowing the lawn and creating programs for my students at my studio/school. When I first started teaching everyone told me I had to do Facebook so I spent hours each week and found it went well as entertainment for people but found I didn’t receive any new students from it. So when Covid closed down most businesses I no longer did Facebook and found I have so much more time for my art. And enjoying my time a lot more. Love hearing the views of both and agree with so much being said. 🎨
Awesome Andrew, thank you so much for sharing, mate.
Thanks Andrew for including my question...already on it for my next newsletter...thanks bunches!
Maria is a treasure...not only for her husband/family but for all artists out there.
Just purchased it. Looking forward to what 2024 will bring with a totally new, energized approach 💪🏻💪🏻 let's GOOOOOOOOOO
Fantastic interview!! Thank you both!
What a wonderful testimony! I've been following Maria and Drew for a long time. They make a great team!
Thankyou Andrew. Maria is a wonderful person. As an older person but youngish artist I have learned sooo much from this podcast today.
Thanks again and look forward to more helpful content.
Cheers,

1:26:12 In sales techniques (particularly Cardone says to use this) its better to disqualify them rather than qualify lead them on and waste your time. If you have to convince someone to pay more than what they want, youre not going to make the sale anyway. I give them options instead. There are other techniques that I use, like saying the most expensive price first, and then the lower/smaller, to make it seem more affordable/a good deal. And still, that wont help. I recently had a potential client contact me for a portrait, just a small 8x10 so i quoted him 550 USD. He was fine with that and we kept discussing what photo to use and so forth. When that was finalized I sent him my usual half up front link. Never heard from him again. So he expected me to work on spec for HIS commission. Amazing! ALWAYS GET HALF UP FRONT AND THE REST ON DELIVERY. Love the tip about having them envisioning where they are going to put it.
Try to imagine that SR71 blackbird when you're father was a sailplane pilot? Still have a SR71 blackbird. I remember 6.5 mach in 2000 at 29 palms just before the hector earthquake almost lost me breaking my new boombox made wrong. A unit of no CD music. My husband's cd player didn't work for his stereo anymore. Mine I gave to a friend who had no CD player for her stereo receiver for music as a thanks for watching my cockatiel. We had our lovebirds already by the earthquake. The cockatiel was 31 years old when I put her in a huge rock in front of our home nearby the reservoir that saved Utah's state bird. Nevada's state bird is the nighthawk!
No! It wasn't a coma haven't you've been given cough syrup in the 70,',s? Pink elephant time in dumbo! Disney cartoon of disley wand!
Amazing and inspiring podcast - Thank you!!
Thanks for the learning. Hopefully your mic will be a little louder
Thank you Andrew for the interview with Maria! There is so much value in it!!😊
Thank you vey much for that segment, very inspiring! I also thought about that Insta-stuff that I am very bad in tbh, about followers and so on. And as much as I understand that you just need as many followers as possible to be seen as an artist and make a living from it (which I am still far away from), I decided to not produce stuff FOR Instagram, but produce my stuff AND put it on Instagram. That takes away a lot of selfpressure to fit into a frame or scheme. Therefore my account looks like a mess whereas others have a kind of central theme and/or coherent style - which makes it pretty satisfying to look at all the pictures and panels - but I try not to care about it too much.
Covid nightmare of my only hooded jacket a found one by my sister in the street by a citizen of her property room that the person said she found it because she hit it with her car? In the next county. SFO airport lounge. No airport in a gravenstein apple town. Sparkling cider place. I think I owned a job in Reno for our greatest idea of hopland by Asti California.
I am glad your husband survived the experience. Great Podcast and extremely informative. I have found the Internet to be a wasteland when it comes to branding and marketing. When I incorporate my paintings with a story I get interest, but I have never had one painting sold on the Internet. If I am selling prints I target my market very specifically. Here is an example: I do nautical Navy related paintings of ships. If I am doing a painting of an aircraft carrier that ship carries 5000 men and women at any given time. Over the course of 40 years that is a lot of crew members. We Navy men and women have a very tight relationship with our ships and air squadrons. That is my target market. I have found my success comes from pressing the flesh because people buy the artist as much as the art. If people meet you personally I have found that to be a means to success.
Another fantastic conversation. This hit home for me! I’m a brand new artist trying my best on social media. Your podcast never disappoints Andrew, it’s very helpful, and inspiring. Thank you 🙏🏻
Try focusing on believing in others and not critical theory. No art history. Try art through the ages textbook for art instruction of the history why Michelangelo is the best friend of Rafael. I still have a very rare book I just found at our bookstore. Mathematics history.
Awesome, helping me think about being personal and persistent. and to think about the client's ease and helping them feel good or listened to, etc.
Very impressive
Ive read her book before and hearing this interview I mighttttt just have to give it another go 😂 I have been on the fence on taking a deep dive into the biz side of things. I even kept seeing this video suggested in my feed and im like ok fine ill watch it. No regrets 👍 best episode so far. I have been watching your vids since 2017!
Great interview ! Your volume was quite low though.
Loved this interview! It is so inspiring and I'm going to get the book right now!😊 Thank you for this.
Prayer can change reality.
God hears every prayer and anwsers when and how he seems fit. In eternity we will understand more fully.
Hey Andrew greetings from Indonesia I really love this series of yours man and also I hope to see an episode of Kent Williams
This was a good talk. Thank you. Maria is great. Hope she and her husband are well.
What a fantastic interview. As someone with the business sense of a gnat, this has given me a clue as to what direction to take . Thank you so much .
I need help with this oil paints and trying to paint a woman with a moonlight glow what tips can you give mean not like a neon glow but serenity moonlight glow what tips do you have to give me and what paint should I use

Amazing woman...thankyou
Thanks Andrew great listen
Great interview. Lots notes from this gem
🌺
you make a video on how to paint still life
Awesome interview!
Great interview!
Jesus saves!!
I bought Maria’s book when it came out and highly recommend it for any artist. It was refreshing how many unique, out-of-the-box ideas she presented. Thanks for another great interview Andrew.
Love this video. Great topics covered. I am an amateur artist and a professional nurse. I have sold some art but never know what to charge. I like what she was said about not giving a price till the next Day.
Thanks! Yes I always wait a day or two to give a price quote, because 100% of the time, when I give a price on the spot, I underprice it! 😅
I first subscribed to drew brophy in 2012 when I was a senior in highschool obsessed about art. I still got the video favorited somewhere that showed all the crazy Hawaii and tidal wave art, it's surreal hearing about him 11 years later.
Maria, I’m just getting into the meat of this podcast, but I just wanna say that I so appreciate your wisdom, experience and honesty. Your examples about social media ring so true - “get into the work”. OK.. back to the podcast.
Amazing as always. Thank you Andrew and Maria, this one really made an impact on me, it's exactly what I needed to hear at this moment. 🙏
Drew's the man. Wearing his shirt
right now ! All healthy thoughts coming your way.
I’m so glad Maria’s husband, Drew, is doing so much better. So sad they had to go through all that!
She is such a great businesswoman with great ideas. I like when she talked about artists just getting started and finding ways to collect emails as a way to connect with admirers of your art. She mentioned offering a bonus or gift in exchange for one’s email (maybe a free print). I like her changing up the psychology of selling from trying to get someone to buy from you to the artist as offering joy through their work to the buyer. I also liked her idea of teaming up with a local business, where the business benefits. In exchange for doing the business a service, you may get new clients for yourself.
Maria has been an inspiration to me for many years. So glad you’re doing a second podcast. Love her book too.
I’m so glad I found you Andrew! I learn so much from your posts and podcasts. You are definitely serving the world in a positive way just by being yourself.
So valuable! Thank you!
I disagree with one comment. Show your bad work?
No, you never show your bad work . always just show your good work . Bad advice
