  • A nasty bit of guitar hanger burn-through around the headstock of this of this Jr. gets some attention.

    That colour-matching was impressive. TV yellow is hard to duplicate from scratch, I've found. Props.

    Humbrol Paints! Man that reminds me of model making with my Dad when I was a kid. In actual fact the Humbrol factory was just a few miles up the road from where we lived - I guess they called themselves Humbrol after the river Humber which they’re just next to. They had/have a real RAF Fighter jet just inside the factory gates so you can see it when you drive by, kinda like a real life sized ‘model’ airplane!

    I. Couldn’t see a difference at all.
    Nice work man.
    I re-sprayed an O-gauge steam engine model train with testors paint using my air brush and I was shocked how good the finish came out. I had to spray a dull coat on it because it was so glossy and perfect looking. Testors is some good paint.

    Amazing work! I’ve had problems in the past with nitro finishes reacting to guitar stand rubber and now ensure that I never allow direct contact between the rubber and the guitars.

    Great work. I have a TV yellow custom shop LP on the bench now; repaired headstock crack and now to touch up the lacquer. It’s a really tough color to match. Thx again.

      Well I'd never have a guitar reliced but I would never have the finish touched up either...I like to let nature take it's course. That being said, I'd never leave a Gibson (especially not a Custom Shop historic reissue) on a non-nitro-safe stand.

    Perfect. Please explain how these enamels are compatible with Lacquer and thinner. I get that it's mostly pigment, but the general rule being you can put lacquer under anything but not over other materials that will melt and wrinkle .

    Hi, I enjoy all your videos and with this one we can see that you are excellent at matching colors. I've got a question for you: Is there a trick to imitate the green-ish lacquer found on Gibson gold top Les Paul guitars from the '50s? My gold top looks too bright compared to the vintage ones...It is as if the nitrocellulose lacquer from the '50s turns kind of green-ish over time which give these old gold tops a nice look! Thank you!

    I go to Young's Automotive. They were an original DuCo dealer in the 1940s, and they can still mix nitro lacquer REALLY WELL. I worked there very briefly when I was in high school, as their mix monkey. 90% of the job was cleaning paint off of an BIG Ohaus triple beam scale, and a regular 2610 Ohaus triple beam scale. I wish we could still buy Diasol lacquer thinner. If you can get a good deal on a Pasche H Model airbrush BUY ONE!! They have 3 needles so for colors like Dakota Red you can go to a fatter needle, because the red pigment is very coarse. Yellow is also a coarse pigment. If you are ever doing silver paint, you need to be ready run outside and check your work under actual direct sunlight every 3 or 4 minutes. I also run a Pasche VL, and a few Imatta guns, but my favorite is an old Aerograph. Alas Aerograph went tits up years ago and replacement parts are unobtainuim now. All the best European airbrush guys swore by Aerograph. Thayer & Chandler is owned by Badger now, so they are dead to me. Thayer Chandler were the "T shirt artists'' " sprayer airbrushes. They'd all have 20 T&Cs with 20 colors of paint to put a little cartoony caracature of you on a T shirt.

    For my own educational purposes it seems from the reflection there are some lines coming through post repair. Is this the wood grain or the previous damage showing through? I was wondering if the initial feather sanding could have been spread out further longitudinally to allow a shallow gradient from the wood to the original top coat.

    I need to mix gold from a 2011 Gibson Les Paul trad-pro Gold top this guitar is made exclusively for guitar center . I just moved and didn’t have my work bench shop set up so I used the kitchen table . My 5 year old nephew saw me intimidating the bridge and grabbed a screw driver when I was in the other room and put a 5mm chip off the paint . I tried to use 3000 grit sand paper to smooth it out and make it better . I’m not anal about scratches . I live fine with them but this one is under my picking hand when I play and don’t even see it until I put the guitar on my stand until I clean the oil off my guitar from my hand and put it away . What colors of testers do I need to try to match it . I know Gold , but what other colors will lighten it and darken it . And even change the hue ? I would really appreciate your input please . Thank you anyway weather you can give me some tips or not . Ray

      @twoodfrd  5 років тому +5

      It's very difficult to suggest colors. Matching is difficult even for experienced people. To be honest if it's that difficult to see, anything you put on will probably highlight the scratch and make it more visible.

    Nice job, looks really good. Only thing I noticed was the shadow from new paint through the thick original lacquer layer. You would have to sand through the lacquer and only then apply the colour. After that you could build up the lacquer layers.
