  • What was meant to be an evening of magnet fishing along the bank of my local river, came to an abrupt end after less than 10 minutes. It was a totally bizarre find, and one of the best moments this year.

A small number of viewers have suggested this was set up, or I knew the other magnet was there. This assumption is made because I kept throwing my magnet into the same area of water. This is how it happened. Things tend to get found on either side of a bridge and not underneath. Unfortunately an overhanging tree or bush prevented me from walking further along the riverbank to the left (downstream). So I decided to start underneath the bridge and work upstream - to the right. The plan was to find something -anything- and continually move upstream. After all, I needed some finds to justify the video. I was actually about to move without a find when I found the old magnet. I was also aware of the angle of the area covered by the camera, being on a tripod, so tried to keep the magnet throws within the viewfinder's range. To answer the main question, I did manage to separate the magnets, by whacking the old one with an brick! Not very scientific, but it worked. It moved to the side by an inch, so I kept going until they were separated. Until that happened, my magnet was out of use for around three months, and so it was not something I would voluntarily choose to do. I hope you enjoyed the video.

A small tip. Cut the top part off a 2l plastic bottle and slip it down the rope to cover the magnet. That helps stop it getting caught on rocks and tree branches etc.

Some great and hilarious suggestions there, but the simplest method I've found for getting magnets apart is to simply tap a wooden shim/wedge in between the magnets with a mallet and let the wedge do the work for you. That way there is nothing for the magnets to stick to, and no way to hurt yourself or damage your property.

One idea: tie your magnet to any strong overhanging bar, such as a railing bar on a low bridge or a pedestrian thoroughfare, and tie the "new" magnet with a four-point rope to a wood pallet. And start piling heavy things like bricks onto the pallet. Pallet should only be a few centemeters off the ground, and the magnets tied immediately above so the freed one does not have far to fall. You may also want to wrap the new magnet in a small towel or wrap with duct tape to protect it as it snaps away from the other magnet.
The other technique I have read is to slowly and gently wedge wooden wedges between the magnets until they pry loose. The second technique seems the less public.

I’m glad you told us what was the river and what was the magnet. I would’ve never figured it out! LOL! 😂🤣😂🤣
It’s funny that you found a magnet! You’ll either have to hit one on the edge of a concrete abutment while holding onto the other, or put one in a large vice, and smack the other one with a sledgehammer. You can’t pull them apart you have to slide them apart.

Hi Rusty, just an idea but you could try working a very thin piece of plastic (take an old milk bottle cut one side into a flat square piece of plastic about 5x5. Take a very thin sharp blade and try working it between the 2 magnets to try and start an opening. If you can open it slightlty start wedging the thing piece of plastic between the two and gradually work them apart. The plastic will block the power and eventually dislodge the 2 magnets..worth a try.

It’s greatest strength is pulling straight. Try to slide them apart in opposite directions. Once you get a lip on one side, drive a plastic wedge used for felling trees between them, one after another and continue sliding them sideways.

If you still haven't got the magnets apart, try holding one in a vise. And using a pipe clamp or something that can put constant pressure and try to slide one across the other slowly. And if possible see if you can find or make a wedge to jam in between the two magnets while forcing them apart. This way if something slips out of control you won't lose your progress. The other idea is to use two cars and tie them one to each car and then, while the cars are pulling, trying to jam a wedge in between them until they part ways.

  • @chukzombi

also, get another rope through that "new" magnet ring and tie both behind a tree, get a hunk of wood. from behind the tree start twisting those ropes like a plane propeller and see if you could pull them apart that way. be careful though that might be dangerous if goes wrong.

Can you put one in a vise up to the edge and hit it with a rubber hammer? What mean is, put one horizontally up to where the two magnets are sticking to one another and use a rubber hammer to gently push them apart perhaps with a block of wood?

  • @masonringbinder684
    @masonringbinder684 6 років тому +1

You will have to slide them apart, secure one in a wooden frame after removing the eye bolt and using it or a longer bolt to secure it down to the frame and slide the other off. Mind your fingers though, if they are caught between them they may get crushed.

just a suggestion, using a workbench vise, secure one of the magnets in the vise and push a thin sheet of a non magnetic material between the magnets, then another, and try to use a brass or other non magnetic wedge to create a space between the magnets, until they are able to be separated. this will prevent or reduce damage to the surface of the magnets.

If you haven't already gotten them separated, I suggest securing one in a vice and tapping the other with a rubber or plastic or wooden mallet and seeing if you can get them to slide apart a little bit, or tie them both to something in opposite directions to keep a lot of tension on them and carefully trying to slip something between them to pry them apart. I don't know if either way will work, just a couple of ideas. Just be careful.

That way you won't have as be to go swimming when the rope is jerked out of your hand...... 2 slide the top of a plastic soda bottle over the rope so it covers the top of your magnet. Really cool catch.
You might try tying one to a tree, with a VERY strong rope and connect the other to your car. Then pull them apart. Hint: The one you tie to your car should have a very short rope or chain. That way if the rope breaks, it won't have enough length to send the magnets flying back to strike your vehicle.

Use an hydraulic wood splitter, position the center of the joined magnets against the splitting wedge post and use the ram to push the splitting wedge post between the two magnets. Split the magnets instead of wood!

  • @oregonorbustgrammaprice4450
    @oregonorbustgrammaprice4450 6 років тому

Yes. You need all wood box frame. With slot in bottom for the hopefully exiting magnet. Pushing on top magnet with the 2x4 as a push levor. All had to be non ferris, the other mag falls into wood box away from original one. I saw no magnetic demo how to get the neodynum, magnets apart this way. Same is true of you have heavy flat metal stuck on. Good idea for anyone magnet fishing to rig this box up.
Look at a paper cutter. The cut overlaps the edge of the plastic holder, giving the cutting legit a bit to,talk over the edge. Same idea with the 2, 2x4. One overlaps the edge, so u can push 2nd magnet with force down the hole u made in the base wood so when pressure begins the slide it can't return back up and stick to original, again. It also puts 2 inches of wood between the magnets.

Tie one end to your car (tow hook) and the other end to a big tree. Let us know how you got them apart

david perkins ok try standing on edge (one side of the magnet) on a vice or hard surface and hitting the other magnet with a sledgehammer

Exactly. There's a video on UA-cam of someone trying to yank something clear using a car, and it goes flying through their back window.

Rusty Nails I didn't think I would have to explain on how to do it, you seem to be intelligent enough to be careful so that wouldn't happen. What I would do is use a heavy chain, go slow and use good judgement on when to stop and if it didn't work i would try something else. There's alot of people on UA-cam that don't have enough brains between them to know what would happen if you use nylon rope that is stretches and will snap and recoil breaking or hurting someone. I think I'm not going to comment anymore.

Hi Mate, you need to put one in a large vise and use a pry bar that will fit in the eye of the other and pry down and they should pop apart, might take a Mates weight too though, lol.

That is crazy. What luck, now if you lose one you will have another. Once you get them apart that is. And I'm sure you will. I was expecting a motorbike or something like that.

I believe you, I got my big magnet wedged in a creek and had to leave it tied off to a tree for almost a month before could go back and get it. It was still there and we managed to get it unstuck, we were lucky. It was a Anniversary present. 💖

you could get a large bolt and a few nuts to place them together side by side for double the chance of catching something . would make for a super strong magnet too .

that was awesome but kind of a curse try some WD 40 its a spray oil put it around the magnets and see if any seeps in might make them slid a bit all I can say is good luck thanks for all your vids

Tie one to a car and the other to a tree but make sure the one attached to the tree has the long line as you wouldn't want flying into the back window of the car

  • @JonathanPlumber

Put one in a vice and use a bar through the other hole to leaver it apart and slide in some plastic to avoid chipping the magnets

Hahaha, how on earth! Beaten at your own game. Not only you found a magnet, you found exactly the same magnet! I think the separating trick with one or 2 cars works without breaking windows if you attach a safety cord that prevents the magnets from flying more then one meter. Film it! Cheers

LOL The Irony. You couldn't make it up! I have just ordered my fishing magnet. It cost me a mint but it's a good one. I can't wait to get going, it should be here in a couple of days. Can I ask, are you still magnet fishing or have you quit? I am 56 and just looking for something to get me out and about.

  • @ammoalamo6485

you will have to slide them apart. perhaps some penetrating oil will help; brake fluid is just as good but it stains red. must keep the magnet face slick or covered with some thin Teflon glued on to help in the future. if you have a 350-pound magnet and the other is also 350 lb, maybe a 1/2 ton hydraulic jack will pull them straight apart. but sliding should require less than 70 pounds, just make sure they are both secured, and the ropes drawn tight all the time and tied off to prevent injury from slamming back together. goodluck,

Catching a magnet whilst magnet fishing! Never saw that possibility coming!
Use a metal wedge and hammer it between them. If you have found an axe use that for a wedge. You might break one or both magnets or even the wedge. But you might as well give it a shot. You've got nothing to loose!
